If a stream alert plays twice or sounds delayed in OBS Studio, first check for duplicate audio capture and monitoring feedback. Trigger one test alert, watch the Audio Mixer meters to see which sources react, disable overlapping routes, then record and listen to a short test before going live. The exact cause depends on your setup.
Why stream alerts echo in OBS
OBS Studio does not provide alerts directly; alerts from third-party services are usually added to a scene as a Browser Source. Echo can occur when audio reaches OBS through more than one route—for example, when a device is captured both as a scene source and as a global audio device, or when monitored audio is routed back into a captured input.
A doubled or briefly delayed alert makes overlapping capture and monitor feedback sensible first checks, not a guaranteed diagnosis. Use the meters and a recording to trace the audio rather than assuming every echo has the same cause.
Fix the echo step by step

Find the alert Browser Source
Open the scene that displays the alert and locate the third-party alert overlay, normally a Browser Source. Keep the Audio Mixer visible while testing. OBS’s alert guidance explains how third-party alerts are added: How do I add alerts to my stream?

Trigger one test alert and watch the meters
Use the alert provider’s test function. Note which Audio Mixer meters move and whether more than one source reacts in sync. This is a practical way to narrow down overlapping routes, not a formal OBS echo test. If multiple sources react, inspect those sources before changing settings.

Remove duplicate device capture
Check whether the same microphone or audio output is captured twice: once through an Audio Input/Output Capture source in the scene, and again as a global device under Settings → Audio. If both routes capture the same device, disable one. OBS warns that adding an Audio Input/Output Capture source can cause echo when that device is also selected in Settings → Audio. Which route to keep depends on your setup: global Desktop Audio is simple, while a scene source can be controlled separately in the mixer. Avoid keeping both routes active for the same device.

Check per-application capture on Windows
If you use Application Audio Capture sources, OBS advises disabling global Desktop Audio to avoid echo. OBS documents Application Audio Capture for Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11, beginning with OBS Studio 28. The guide says Window Capture and Game Capture can include application audio starting with OBS Studio 30.1. These instructions are Windows-specific; do not assume the same options or behavior on other platforms. Read the Application Audio Capture Guide.

The guide also mentions VB-CABLE as a Windows workaround for some applications that do not work with Application Audio Capture. It is not a general fix for alert echo.

Inspect monitoring and loopback routes
In Advanced Audio Properties, check the alert source’s monitoring mode. Then check OBS’s configured monitoring device and confirm that its output is not also being captured or looped back into OBS. Monitoring lets you hear a source through the selected device; it does not, by itself, mean the stream should receive a second copy. The current OBS Audio Mixer Guide explains monitoring. Capturing a monitored output can create a feedback path, so treat it as a troubleshooting possibility and verify it in your own routing.

Record and listen to the stream mix
Make a short OBS recording with a test alert, then play it back. Local monitoring can sound different from the audio actually being recorded or sent to viewers, so do not rely on what you hear live at your desk alone. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends checking audio meters and testing settings before going live.
Match the symptom to the next check
- The alert sounds doubled or repeats with a short delay: look first for duplicate device capture and a monitoring output that feeds a captured input.
- The alert repeats after a scene switch or refresh: check whether the same alert Browser Source appears more than once in the active scene or scene collection. Browser Source properties include Shutdown source when not visible and Refresh browser source when scene becomes active. These are secondary checks; those properties are not established as a general echo fix. See the OBS Browser Source guide.
- You hear a duplicate but viewers do not: check your local monitoring route and whether its output is being captured. A mismatch between your local sound and the viewer mix is a routing clue, not proof of a particular cause.
- Viewers hear a duplicate but you do not: inspect the sources routed to the stream output and their mixer settings. Do not assume local monitor settings caused a duplicate that is absent from your own listening.
Platform and version limits
Audio Input/Output Capture sources are documented for Windows and macOS; OBS directs Linux users to ALSA/PulseAudio sources instead. Application Audio Capture guidance applies to the stated Windows versions, not all operating systems. For exact labels and availability, check the OBS documentation against your installed version: the cited guides were published between 2021 and 2026, and menus can change.
