Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteDisney+ Error Code 42 usually indicates that the app cannot establish or maintain a usable connection to Disney+. Disney describes the message as trouble connecting to the internet and identifies a slow or unstable connection and weak Wi‑Fi as likely causes. It does not prove that your device is completely disconnected: your device may be connected to the router while the router’s internet connection is failing. See Disney’s Error Code 42 guidance.
Start with the least disruptive fix: fully close and reopen Disney+, restart the device, then power-cycle the modem and router. If that does not help, compare Disney+ with other apps, devices, and networks to locate the fault before clearing data or reinstalling. The original query specified 2023, but the steps here follow Disney’s current support guidance; device menus and support procedures can change.

Try these quick fixes first
- Fully close Disney+, then reopen it and try the title again.
- Try another title and another streaming app on the same device.
- Restart the streaming device.
- Power-cycle the modem and router, reconnecting the modem first and router second.
- If Error 42 remains, test Disney+ on another device or network.
For the network restart, an approximately 30-second wait with the modem and router unplugged is a practical interval, not a Disney requirement. Disney’s recommended order is to restart the modem, router, and device before reopening the app. Its streaming troubleshooting guidance also recommends relaunching the app, checking for updates, clearing cache or data where available, and reinstalling when needed.

| What happens | Likely area to investigate | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Only one device fails | That device’s app, software, compatibility, or connection | Restart and update it; then clear app data or reinstall if needed. |
| Every device on the home Wi‑Fi fails | Router, ISP, DNS, or a service-side issue affecting that route | Restart modem and router; test the connection and check with the ISP if problems continue. |
| Disney+ fails but other apps work | Disney+ app/session, device compatibility, DNS/routing, or Disney+ service | Try another Disney+ device or network and check Disney+ support. |
| Disney+ works on a phone hotspot but not home Wi‑Fi | Home network, ISP, router, or DNS path | Investigate the home connection; the test does not prove which component is at fault. |
| Only a browser fails | Browser version, site data, cookies, JavaScript, extensions, or proxy settings | Try the browser checks below. |
| Only one movie or episode fails | A title-specific playback or authorization issue may be involved | Test other titles before treating it as a general internet failure. |
Disney recommends testing other apps and checking whether similar issues occur elsewhere on the device. If other apps also fail, connectivity or the ISP deserves attention. Try another Wi‑Fi network or a cellular hotspot, if available, and test more than one Disney+ title.
Fully close and reopen Disney+
Pressing Home may leave an app running in the background. Exit the title, use the device’s app switcher or force-close function to quit Disney+ completely, then launch it again. Menu names differ across TVs, streaming devices, consoles, and phones; use the device’s normal app-closing controls.
Restart the streaming device
Use the device’s restart command when available. Otherwise, shut it down fully and reconnect power as appropriate for its manufacturer. A console in sleep mode may not have restarted; choose a full shutdown. On a computer, restart the browser first and restart the computer if the problem persists. There is no single restart control or required unplugging interval for every device.
Power-cycle the modem and router
- Close Disney+.
- Switch off or unplug the modem and router.
- Wait until both are fully powered down.
- Reconnect the modem first and wait for its service indicators to stabilize.
- Reconnect the router and wait for Wi‑Fi to return.
- Restart the streaming device, reopen Disney+, and test playback.
Disney’s current streaming guidance specifies the modem-then-router-then-device sequence. If restarting the equipment helps only temporarily, the underlying connection, router, or ISP issue may remain.

Improve Wi‑Fi and test connection quality
- Move the device closer to the router or remove avoidable obstacles between them.
- Pause large downloads, cloud backups, game updates, and other video streams; disconnect or pause devices that do not need the connection.
- If the router offers both bands, try 5 GHz near the router for greater potential speed, or 2.4 GHz where range matters more.
- Use Ethernet for a TV or streaming box if practical; reposition or restart mesh nodes if the device relies on a mesh network.
- Run a speed test on or near the affected device, ideally when Error 42 occurs. Compare Wi‑Fi with Ethernet if available, and check whether other activity is using the connection.
- Check your ISP’s outage information or contact the ISP if service is dropping or unstable.
Disney notes that distance from the router, connected-device load, and ISP or network problems can affect streaming. A strong Wi‑Fi indicator only describes the device-to-router link; it does not establish that the router has a stable connection to the internet. A single speed-test result is not conclusive because stability and packet loss can matter as well as speed. Disney’s internet connection guidance advises testing the connection against its recommendations and contacting the ISP if it falls short. No universal speed threshold is stated here because recommendations depend on playback quality and region.
Update Disney+ and the device
Check the device’s official app store for a Disney+ update, then check for pending software updates for the TV, streaming device, console, phone, tablet, browser, or operating system. Restart after installing updates and retry playback. Disney recommends using a supported device or platform with current software; its troubleshooting page provides the relevant guidance.
Clear Disney+ cache or data where available
On Android/Google TV or Fire TV, look under a path such as Settings → Apps → Disney+ → Storage; labels vary by device and software version. Try clearing the cache first. If necessary, clear data as a separate step. Clearing data can sign you out and remove local settings or downloads.
Roku, Apple TV, many smart TVs, and consoles may not offer a separate cache-clearing control. Restarting, signing out, or reinstalling may be the available alternative. Disney confirms cache/data clearing as a troubleshooting option, but does not give one universal path for every platform in its streaming guidance.

Reinstall Disney+ if the problem is limited to the app
Consider uninstalling and reinstalling when the app is up to date, other apps work normally, the issue is limited to one device, and restarting or clearing cache has not helped. Disney lists reinstalling as a troubleshooting step. Before doing so, expect that you may need to sign in again, reactivate the device, re-download offline content, or review permissions and parental controls.
Check browser settings and network filters
If you use DisneyPlus.com, update the browser and confirm that JavaScript and cookies are enabled. Restart the browser, clear Disney+ site data or cookies, and test a supported alternative browser or private window. Temporarily disable extensions that may interfere with scripts or requests, such as ad blockers, privacy filters, or script blockers; turn protections back on after the test.
VPNs, proxies, custom DNS, network-level ad blocking, and captive portals are secondary possibilities, not confirmed official causes of Error 42. Temporarily disconnect a VPN or proxy, test the ISP’s default DNS, or try a personal connection instead of hotel, school, office, or public Wi‑Fi. Check whether the network requires a captive-portal sign-in. Do not permanently disable security software or change router DNS just to test this error.
Know when to contact your ISP or Disney+
Contact your ISP
Ask your ISP to investigate when multiple devices have internet or streaming trouble, the connection repeatedly drops or fluctuates, tests fail to meet Disney’s recommendations, or a modem restart only helps briefly. Ask about a local outage, signal or line problems, modem health, packet loss or latency, account-level service issues, and router firmware or provisioning. Disney’s connection guidance specifically recommends contacting the ISP when testing does not meet its recommendations.
Contact Disney+
Contact Disney+ if Error 42 persists on multiple supported devices or networks while other services work, or if updating and reinstalling do not resolve a Disney+-specific failure. Before contacting support, note the exact code and message, device model, app and operating-system versions, country or region, affected titles, ISP, when the issue began, and whether another device or hotspot works. A screenshot can also help. Disney’s Help Center offers troubleshooting and support options, including live support.
Other useful distinctions
Error 42 is not proof that Disney+ is down, nor does it by itself establish a subscription, password, or account problem. A temporary Disney+ service issue is possible, so test on another device or network and consult Disney+ support rather than repeatedly changing router settings if the same failure occurs everywhere. Disney lists Error 142 separately from Error 42; the codes are not interchangeable. See Disney’s Error 142 page and its error-code index.
For a 4K or HDR setup, HDMI/HDCP compatibility can affect playback under broader streaming troubleshooting, but that is not established as the usual cause of Error 42. Disney’s streaming-issues guidance covers that separate compatibility consideration.
