When Twitch audio and video do not line up, first check whether the problem is a fixed offset, growing drift, headphone-monitoring delay, or simply a stream that is late to real time. For a fixed offset, adjust the affected source in OBS: use Sync Offset when audio is early, or a video Render Delay when the picture is early. Test the result from another device; Twitch’s Stream Delay delays the whole broadcast and does not repair lip-sync.

Identify what is out of sync

Before changing settings, decide which signals disagree and whether the mismatch stays constant. A fixed offset is different from a delay that grows during a session, and both are different from a stream that is simply several seconds behind real life.

What you notice What it may indicate First place to investigate
Your lips move before your voice is heard, or your voice is heard before your lips move. A fixed microphone-to-camera offset. Compare the early source with the late one; adjust audio or video accordingly.
A game impact, button press, or other visible event does not match its sound. Capture-card buffering, separate audio and video paths, or monitoring delay. Check capture-source properties and how game audio reaches OBS.
Your microphone is out of time with game, music, or desktop audio. One source may be entering the mix earlier or later than another. Adjust only the source that is out of time.
Your headphones are delayed, but a recording or viewer playback sounds right. An issue in the monitoring path rather than the broadcast mix. Check OBS monitoring and direct-monitoring routes.
The stream is behind real life, but speech still matches the picture. Stream latency, not audio/video desynchronization. Check playback and latency settings; do not use a lip-sync correction for this.

OBS community issue reports describe monitoring delay or drift in particular cases, but they are not evidence of a universal OBS defect. Compare the recording or remote playback with what you hear in your headphones before changing the broadcast mix: OBS issue 4531 and OBS issue 3577.

Test what viewers actually hear

  1. Open your channel on a phone, tablet, or second computer rather than relying only on OBS preview. Twitch recommends checking synchronization from another computer or smartphone: Twitch’s OBS synchronization guidance.
  2. Use headphones on the test device so its playback does not feed back into the room or microphone.
  3. Make a clear test: clap in front of the camera, say a short phrase with an exaggerated mouth movement, or trigger a recognizable game sound or alert.
  4. Note whether audio comes before or after the matching image, and estimate the offset. Around 100 ms can be subtle but noticeable; 250–500 ms is usually obvious in speech; a second or more suggests a substantial routing, capture, or configuration issue.
  5. When possible, compare a local recording with the live Twitch playback. Change one setting at a time and repeat the same test.

Correct a fixed offset in OBS

For a constant mismatch, use the source-level audio control Twitch identifies in its OBS guidance: Audio Mixer gear icon → Advanced Audio Properties → Sync Offset (ms). Exact layout and labels can vary with OBS version and operating system.

  1. In OBS Studio, find the affected source in the Audio Mixer.
  2. Click its gear icon and choose Advanced Audio Properties.
  3. Record the current value in Sync Offset (ms) so you can restore it.
  4. If the audio happens before the matching picture, add delay to that audio source. Start with a small adjustment, such as 10–50 ms, then test again externally.
  5. If the audio happens after the picture, do not assume that a negative offset will solve it. Audio that arrives late cannot simply be recovered from before its capture time; consider delaying the corresponding video source or fixing the audio path.

Adjust only the source that is early or late. A correction that works for one scene, game, or device may not suit another, so verify the actual output after each change.

When the picture is early, delay the video

If the webcam or other video arrives before the sound that should match it, delaying that video source can be cleaner than adding delay to several audio sources. OBS’s Render Delay filter documentation describes the filter as a way to delay source rendering, including for webcam-to-microphone synchronization. OBS lists it for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

  1. Right-click the relevant video source in OBS and choose Filters.
  2. Add a Render Delay filter.
  3. Enter the delay in milliseconds, then check the Twitch output from the test device.

Render Delay affects the selected video source, not the whole stream, and it does not appear for every source type. If the filter is unavailable, check the source type and OBS’s filters guide and OBS overview.

Check a webcam or capture card

Capture devices can buffer or process audio and video along different paths. In OBS, open the capture source’s Properties and test its Buffering option. OBS says disabling buffering may help when a device has unwanted delay; enabling it may help with stuttering or limited system resources. This is a trade-off, not a universal best setting. See OBS’s video capture source guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • After changing buffering, check for both timing problems and stuttering. Restore the original setting if the change makes the source unstable.
  • Confirm the capture source’s resolution and frame rate match the incoming signal where possible.
  • Compare audio captured over HDMI with audio routed separately through a microphone, mixer, or interface. A separate path can add its own latency.
  • Make sure capture-card audio is not entering the mix twice—for example, once through the capture source and again through Desktop Audio.

If the mismatch grows over time, investigate drift

A fixed Sync Offset is not a dependable cure for a delay that keeps changing. If the offset varies between sessions or gradually grows, a sample-rate or clocking mismatch is more plausible than a simple fixed offset, though other causes are possible.

Make the audio chain consistent

Check the sample-rate settings used by OBS, your microphone interface, capture card, operating-system sound device, virtual audio cable, and hardware mixer. OBS provides a global Sampling Rate setting; its overview documents the audio settings. 48 kHz is a common baseline for video workflows, not a guaranteed fix. The important diagnostic step is to look for inconsistent rates across the chain.

Separate monitoring from broadcast audio

If the delay exists only in your headphones, turn off OBS monitoring temporarily and compare both a local recording and remote Twitch playback. In OBS, check Settings → Audio → Monitoring Device, and avoid monitoring the same microphone through both an interface’s direct-monitoring output and OBS software monitoring. Direct hardware monitoring can provide a lower-latency way to hear a microphone. Bluetooth headphones may add listening latency; using wired headphones can help isolate that possibility, but Bluetooth does not necessarily delay the stream output itself.

If monitoring delay accumulates, temporarily disable and re-enable the source or restart OBS, then test again. OBS documentation distinguishes monitoring from output paths: OBS source reference. Reports of monitoring buffer buildup and drift are documented in issue 4531 and issue 3577; they describe reported cases, not a guaranteed explanation for every setup.

Check devices and performance

  • Look for a different default audio device, USB initialization order changes, virtual audio routing, or capture-card buffering that changes between sessions.
  • Check OBS for rendering lag, encoding lag, dropped frames, and unusually high CPU or GPU use. Overloaded scenes, many browser sources, driver warnings, or inconsistent device timing can complicate diagnosis.
  • Compare a local recording with Twitch playback. If both drift, focus first on sources, devices, timestamps, monitoring, or system performance. If the recording is correct but Twitch playback is not, investigate the stream output and playback path.

OBS’s help portal and stream buffering troubleshooting guide explain dropped frames and connection-related buffering. Dropped frames or buffering can make playback appear irregular, but they are not by themselves proof of an audio/video offset.

Remove duplicate or echoing audio paths

If audio sounds doubled, echoing, or phasey, find duplicate routes before adjusting timing. Each sound should normally enter the broadcast mix through one intentional path. Common overlaps include capture-card audio plus Desktop Audio, browser-source audio plus desktop capture, or a microphone heard through both direct monitoring and OBS monitoring.

Twitch specifically warns that capturing a Stream Together call through both Chrome/Desktop Audio and a browser source can duplicate the call: Twitch Stream Together guidance. The same routing check is useful for other sources. If a VOD differs from the live stream, inspect OBS audio-track routing and Twitch VOD-track settings; sources can be routed differently for live playback and VOD.

Distinguish stream latency from lip-sync

If the whole broadcast is several seconds behind real life but voices still match the picture, that is stream latency. Twitch says streams naturally have some delay, and its Stream Delay setting adds a deliberate buffer to the complete broadcast. The current Twitch help page says Partners can set native delay up to 15 minutes; availability depends on account status. In OBS, the documented path is Settings/Preferences → Advanced → Stream Delay, though labels can vary by version. Neither setting corrects a mismatch between audio and video.

  • With Scarlett 4th Gen, you have all you need to record, mix and master your music: Includes industry-leading recording software and a full collection of record-making plugins

If only one viewer reports a problem, test another device, browser, or network before changing your broadcast configuration. If viewers broadly report the same mismatch, concentrate on the OBS output and source paths.

Streamlabs Desktop and other broadcasting apps

The diagnostic principle is the same in other broadcasting software: determine which source is early or late, distinguish output from headphone monitoring, and correct the appropriate audio or video path. Menu names and controls differ; the OBS paths above should not be assumed to apply to Streamlabs Desktop.

Reset and isolate the setup

  1. Stop streaming and save a short recording that shows the problem, if possible.
  2. Restart OBS. If needed, disconnect and reconnect USB microphones, capture cards, and audio interfaces, then reopen their source properties.
  3. Test a minimal scene with one microphone, one camera, and one desktop or game-audio source.
  4. Re-add filters, browser sources, and other audio routes one at a time until the fault returns.
  5. If the problem appears limited to one setup, test a new blank scene collection.
  6. For device updates, use the manufacturer’s official support page. If the issue began after an OBS or driver update, compare against a clean profile or known-good configuration before considering a downgrade.

What to include when asking for help

If the problem persists, provide enough detail for someone to distinguish a fixed offset from drift or monitoring delay:

  • OBS version, operating system and version.
  • Microphone or interface model, webcam or capture-card model, and connection type (such as USB, HDMI, Bluetooth, or virtual audio device).
  • Whether the issue is constant or grows over time, and the approximate offset and how you measured it.
  • Whether it affects the local recording, Twitch playback, headphones, or all of them.
  • Whether changing scenes or restarting temporarily fixes it.
  • An OBS log file and any relevant device or driver warnings.
