Netflix officially calls this Error 17377 and displays the code -17377. Netflix says stored data on the device is preventing playback. On Apple TV, update Netflix, completely power the Apple TV off for at least 30 seconds, update tvOS, and try again. If the code remains, Netflix asks affected viewers to contact support because it is investigating the problem.
“CM-17377” is a common third-party/search label for the same-looking failure; it is not the name used on Netflix’s official error page.
What Netflix error CM-17377 or 17377 means
Netflix’s dedicated help page identifies the problem as Netflix Error 17377, with -17377 shown in the playback message. Its stated cause is data stored on the device that is blocking the title from playing. That description does not by itself indicate a payment problem, cancelled account, or permanent hardware failure.
| Label you may see | What Netflix officially uses |
|---|---|
| CM-17377 | Common third-party or search wording; not the title of Netflix’s official page |
| 17377 | Netflix’s official error name |
| -17377 | Code displayed in Netflix’s playback message |
Netflix’s documented procedure is written for Apple TV. Some third-party pages report the number on phones, computers, smart TVs, or consoles, but that does not establish that the same Apple TV controls or diagnosis apply there.

Fix Netflix error 17377 on Apple TV
Follow these steps in order. They start with the least disruptive actions and match Netflix’s dedicated instructions.
1. Update the Netflix app
- Open the App Store on Apple TV.
- At the top, select Purchased.
- Select All Apps on the left.
- Find and select Netflix.
- Select Update if that button appears.
If there is no Update button, Netflix says the app is already current. Open Netflix and retry the title.
2. Completely restart Apple TV
- Turn off the Apple TV.
- If you cannot tell whether it is fully off, unplug its power cable.
- Leave it powered down for at least 30 seconds.
- Reconnect power or turn it on, then try Netflix again.
A standby or brief sleep is not the same as the full power-off interval Netflix specifies.
3. Update Apple TV software
- From the Home screen, open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Software Updates.
- Select Update Software.
- If an update is offered, choose Download and Install.
- After the update and restart, test Netflix.
Menu wording can vary slightly by tvOS release, but the relevant areas are System and Software Updates.

4. Contact Netflix if the code returns

Use these checks before more disruptive troubleshooting
Check whether one title or every title fails
Play a different film or episode. If only one title fails, do not jump to a factory reset. Netflix’s general playback guidance says to report a title-specific problem through your account’s viewing activity: open Viewing Activity, find the title, and choose Report a Problem. See Netflix’s playback troubleshooting guidance.
If every title fails, continue with the device and app steps above and then test Netflix on another supported device.
Test the same account and title elsewhere
- Works on another device: the Apple TV app, tvOS, device data, or the Apple TV’s connection is more likely involved. This is a troubleshooting inference, not a Netflix diagnosis.
- Fails on multiple devices: the title, account/session, service, or a temporary Netflix-side issue may be involved. Contact Netflix if the problem persists.
Perform a limited network check
Netflix does not define Error 17377 as a slow-internet error; its dedicated page points to stored device data. Network testing is therefore secondary. Confirm that other Apple TV apps can reach the internet, restart the Apple TV and home network if Netflix will not load at all, and try Netflix on another device or network. For broader loading problems, Netflix also recommends network troubleshooting and connectivity checks in its freezing and loading guidance. Do not change DNS settings or install a VPN as a default fix.

Reinstall Netflix only if the app remains faulty
Netflix’s general Apple TV instructions provide reinstall steps, but reinstalling can require you to sign in again:
- Highlight Netflix on the Apple TV Home screen.
- Press and hold the center of the remote’s touch surface or clickpad ring until the app jiggles.
- Press Play/Pause.
- Select Delete.
- Open the App Store and search for Netflix.
- Select Install, open the app, and sign in if prompted.
This is an escalation step from Netflix’s broader troubleshooting material, not a guaranteed cure for Error 17377.
If you see CM-17377 on another device
Netflix’s dedicated 17377 instructions are Apple TV-oriented. If the number appears on a phone, browser, console, smart TV, or streaming box, do not assume Apple TV menu paths apply. Use the device-specific steps in the Netflix troubleshooting index, update that device’s Netflix app and system software, and follow its manufacturer’s restart or reinstall procedure. Search Netflix Help for the exact code if the message differs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a factory reset is usually the wrong first move
Netflix does not tell users to factory-reset Apple TV for Error 17377. A reset can remove apps, settings, network credentials, and other device data while creating substantial setup work. Reserve it for Apple or manufacturer support after Netflix troubleshooting and app reinstallation have failed. If a manufacturer recommends restoring the device, have your Wi-Fi password and Netflix sign-in details available; Netflix warns that restoration can remove apps, data, or settings.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will fixing Error 17377 delete my Netflix account?
No. Updating the app, restarting Apple TV, and updating tvOS do not delete your Netflix account. Reinstalling the app removes the local app and may require you to sign in again.
Do I need to clear an Apple TV cache?
Netflix provides no manual cache-clearing procedure for this error. Update Netflix, fully restart Apple TV, update tvOS, and consider reinstalling the app if necessary.
What if only one movie or episode fails?
Try another title. If other titles play, report the affected title through Viewing Activity rather than factory-resetting Apple TV.
When should I contact Netflix?
Contact Netflix after the app update, 30-second full restart, and tvOS update fail, or when the same title fails across devices. Netflix says it is investigating Error 17377.
