The “Side-Eyeing Chloe” NFT sale is already history: on September 24, 2021, an NFT tied to a still image from the viral family video sold for 25 ETH, reported at roughly $74,000–$75,315 at the time. The family did not sell the video itself. The clip shows a Disneyland surprise announcement—and the very different reactions of sisters Lily and Chloe Clem.
What happens in the video behind the meme?
Katie Clem uploaded the family video in 2013. In it, she tells her daughters about a surprise trip to Disneyland. Lily reacts with visible excitement; Chloe, then about two years old, looks sideways toward the camera with an expression viewers read as skeptical, puzzled or concerned. The contrast between the sisters’ reactions gave the moment its comic force. Scroll.in’s 2021 coverage and ABC News reported that the video had accumulated more than 20 million views by the time of the NFT sale.
The meme is a frame from that clip, not a separate video. Crops, captions, GIFs and reposts turned Chloe’s look into a reaction image used to signal doubt, discomfort, apprehension or disapproval. Those later versions were made and circulated by internet users; they should not be confused with the family’s original video and source image.
What did the family auction, and when?
The family announced the auction on September 23, 2021, with a starting bid of 5 ETH—then reported as about $15,000. It ran on the Foundation marketplace and concluded the following day. Contemporary coverage described the NFT as tied to the original meme image, including a 660-by-371-pixel screengrab from the video. The Independent covered the announcement and starting bid; Decrypt reported the completed sale and image dimensions.

Calling this a sale of “the video” is misleading. The reported item was an NFT associated with a still image from it—not the YouTube clip, Chloe herself, the family’s entire online presence or every copy of the meme on the internet.
How much did it sell for, and who bought it?
The NFT sold for 25 ETH on September 24, 2021. Publications put the cryptocurrency’s dollar equivalent at roughly $74,000 to $75,315 at the time; the difference reflects the timing and exchange rate used for the conversion. The 25 ETH figure is the reported sale price, while the dollar amounts are historical estimates, not a current valuation. The buyer was identified in contemporary reports as 3F Music, a Dubai-based music-production company. ABC News and Roya News also reported the buyer and sale.

What did NFT ownership mean here?
An NFT is a blockchain token associated with a digital asset. The token can provide a record of its creation and transfer, but owning it is not automatically the same as owning the copyright to the image, possessing the only copy of the file, or having permission to reproduce and license the image commercially.
The available reporting confirms the auction and describes the asset as an image or screengrab; it does not establish the full terms of the transaction or show that 3F Music acquired copyright to the video, unrestricted commercial rights, or control over every derivative meme. Millions of people could continue to encounter or share copies independently of the token.

Why did the family sell it as an NFT?
The sale came during the 2021 wave of high-profile meme-NFT auctions. Katie Clem reportedly took an interest after seeing the NFT sale of “Disaster Girl.” Coverage described the proceeds as potentially helping with Chloe’s future education, while the family also presented the auction as a shared family experience. Those accounts describe the family’s rationale, not a guarantee about the eventual value of the proceeds. The Independent reported on the family’s interest, and Utah Business later covered the education angle.
At the time, coverage compared Chloe’s result with NFT sales associated with “Disaster Girl,” Doge, Nyan Cat and “Charlie Bit My Finger,” which reportedly fetched substantially more. Such comparisons are not direct measures of equivalent assets: auctions could differ in rights, format, editions and marketplace terms, while ETH’s dollar price moved over time. A higher meme-NFT sale price does not by itself establish greater copyright value.

A viral image of a very young child
Chloe was a toddler when the video was recorded, and the family handled the auction years later. The story is therefore about more than a price: it illustrates how a fleeting family moment can become a persistent public image, reused in forms its subject did not create. The available reporting does not establish Chloe’s present-day views or personal financial arrangements, so neither should be assumed.
