On February 15, 2019, Taiwan-based Portico Media said its LGBTQ+ streaming service GagaOOLala planned to enter India, shortly after the Supreme Court’s Section 377 ruling decriminalised consensual same-sex relations between adults. The plan included streaming its existing catalogue, working with Indian producers and directors, and possibly serving neighbouring markets.
That announcement was a pitch, not a completed India launch. GagaOOLala is now listed in India’s Apple App Store and Google Play, and its operator says India has ranked among its five largest registered-member markets since 2022. The public evidence supports broad availability and audience growth—not a separately documented Indian operation or a major India-originals slate.
What GagaOOLala announced in 2019
The original report described an expansion planned for 2019. Founder Jay Lin said GagaOOLala wanted to bring its catalogue to Indian viewers and collaborate with Indian producers and directors. The company also discussed reaching Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, and exploring payments for individual titles rather than relying only on subscriptions.
At that time, GagaOOLala said it operated in 13 Southeast Asian countries, had 150,000 free registrations and charged about $6 a month. Those figures describe the service as reported in 2019, not its current scale or price. Read the February 2019 report.

Why India looked attractive
India’s September 2018 Section 377 judgment removed the criminal-law barrier to consensual same-sex relations between adults. It did not create marriage equality, comprehensive anti-discrimination protection or guaranteed freedom for queer films to reach audiences.
For a specialist streamer, India also offered a large mobile-video audience, improving digital payments and a substantial independent and festival filmmaking ecosystem. Its many language markets were an opportunity and a localisation problem: subtitles, dubbing, rights and promotion would all need to work beyond English-speaking metropolitan viewers.
What GagaOOLala is today
GagaOOLala began in Taiwan’s queer-film ecosystem. Jay Lin was involved with the Taiwan International Queer Film Festival and described the need to make Asian LGBTQ+ cinema available year-round rather than only during an annual event. Portico Media has presented the service as part of Taiwan’s wider LGBTQ+ cultural and advocacy environment. Portico Media’s launch background.

What Indian viewers can watch
The service is best understood as a focused catalogue rather than a replacement for a general Indian OTT subscription. Depending on territory rights, viewers may find Asian queer cinema, BL and GL series, coming-of-age and coming-out stories, documentaries, shorts, animation, variety shows, micro-dramas and platform originals.
Availability is title-specific. GagaOOLala warns that licensing restrictions mean a programme shown in another country may not appear in India. Check the individual title page before paying. The app lists English, Chinese and Thai interfaces and multiple subtitle options; it does not promise Hindi, Bengali, Tamil or another Indian-language subtitle for every title.

For viewers
- Strong fit: viewers actively seeking LGBTQ+, BL or GL programming and willing to add a specialist service.
- Weak fit: anyone wanting mainstream Hindi and regional entertainment, guaranteed Indian-language dubbing or one specific title without first checking Indian rights.
- Privacy: consider notification previews, shared devices, payment records, account security and parental controls, particularly where a viewer’s sexual orientation or viewing habits could create personal risk.
For filmmakers and producers
A specialist international platform can provide a clearly defined audience and a route for Asian LGBTQ+ stories to travel beyond India. It may also offer more discoverability for queer work than a generalist catalogue. The trade-offs are territory-by-territory rights, subtitling and dubbing costs, limited public data on Indian revenue and commissioning, and less reach than Netflix, Prime Video, JioHotstar or YouTube.
India’s presence among registered members does not prove that GagaOOLala is commissioning Indian originals. No public evidence supplied here establishes a dedicated India production slate or partnership.

Can a niche queer streamer compete?
GagaOOLala’s advantage is focus: a viewer can browse a service built around queer, BL and GL stories instead of searching a general catalogue. Its constraints are equally clear. It competes with free social video, piracy and large OTT platforms that can spend more on marketing and local-language content. A paid niche service must also persuade viewers that its legally licensed, curated catalogue is worth an additional monthly bill.
For broader viewing, Indian subscribers may compare Netflix India, Amazon Prime Video India, Viki, iQIYI and JioHotstar. Those services have different catalogues and are not substitutes for GagaOOLala’s specialist focus.
The bottom line on the India pitch
GagaOOLala’s 2019 India plan was not simply abandoned: the app is available in India, and the company says India became a significant registered-member market from 2022 onward. But the public record points to global distribution and audience acquisition, not a clearly documented India-local production operation. For viewers, it is a specialist add-on worth checking title by title; for filmmakers, it is a possible international outlet whose actual Indian commissioning and commercial scale remain unverified.
