The fastest way to fix Crunchyroll is to isolate the fault before repeatedly reinstalling the app. Try another episode, then another device or network; restart and update everything; remove extensions, VPNs and proxies; clear the relevant browser or app data; and reinstall only when those tests point to a local installation problem. This sequence distinguishes an outage, title-specific error, unstable connection, browser/DRM problem and device failure.
Identify the symptom first
Different failures need different first tests. Use this table before changing settings.

Check whether Crunchyroll is having an outage
Open the official status page and, if needed, its incident history. Do not assume a clean status page proves everything is working: a regional, account, device or content-specific incident can exist without a platform-wide notice. If the website, episode pages and playback fail on several devices and on both Wi-Fi and mobile data, wait for an official incident update rather than repeatedly resetting your equipment.
Run the low-risk tests
- Close the browser tab or force-close the Crunchyroll app.
- Open Crunchyroll again and try a different episode or series.
- Log out of the affected device and sign in again.
- Restart the phone, computer, TV, console or streaming stick completely.
- Switch Wi-Fi to mobile data, or mobile data to Wi-Fi. If possible, try another device.
- Restart the router: unplug it for about 30 seconds, reconnect it and wait for service to return.
These comparisons are diagnostic. If playback works on a second device, the first device or its app is implicated. If it works on mobile data but not Wi-Fi, investigate the router, ISP, filtering or local network. If only one episode fails, record that title and episode for support instead of treating the whole service as broken.

Fix Crunchyroll in a desktop browser
- Update the browser. Crunchyroll’s browser page currently lists Chrome 117+, Firefox 117+, Edge 117+ and Safari 16.1+; these are live requirements, not permanent guarantees. Recheck Crunchyroll’s browser guidance.
- Hard-refresh the page: press
Ctrl + F5on Windows/Linux orShift + Command + Ron macOS. - Open Crunchyroll in a private/incognito window. If it works there, a stored cookie, site permission or extension is probably involved.
- Temporarily disable ad blockers, pop-up or script blockers, VPNs, proxies and privacy extensions. If testing antivirus web protection, disable it only briefly and turn it back on immediately.
- Clear Crunchyroll’s cookies and cached site data, sign in again and retry.
- Try another supported browser. Do not install unofficial playback-modifying extensions.
Black screen and DRM errors
Codes in the MED, SHAK-6*-GENERIC or SHAK-6*DRM families point to protected-playback trouble. Follow Crunchyroll’s DRM instructions: update the browser, allow protected content, ensure Widevine is enabled where applicable, and retry without extensions, VPNs or proxies. Browser flags and permission labels change, so use the current browser-specific steps rather than an old universal flag path. Screen recording, mirroring, remote-desktop software or unusually strict privacy settings can also interfere.
Fix the mobile app
Android phones and tablets
- Force-stop Crunchyroll, restart the device and install pending Crunchyroll and Android updates.
- Close background apps and downloads, then switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- Clear temporary files at
Settings > Apps > Crunchyroll > Storage > Clear cache. Manufacturer labels vary. - If that fails, use Clear data or Clear storage. This resets local app state, logs you out and may remove local settings or downloads.
- Uninstall and reinstall Crunchyroll from the official app store.
iPhone and iPad
- Force-close Crunchyroll and restart the device.
- Update the app in the App Store and update iOS or iPadOS.
- Check free storage and test another network.
- Delete and reinstall the app if crashes continue. iOS generally has no universal clear-cache button; deleting the app is the normal full reset and can remove downloads and require a new sign-in.

Fix TVs, streaming sticks and consoles
On any platform, exit the app, restart the device fully (not sleep/standby), install system and app updates, restart the router, then reinstall Crunchyroll if necessary. Test the same account on a phone or computer to separate a device fault from an account or service fault. Exact menus differ by model; use the current Crunchyroll troubleshooting category.
Fire TV
Use Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications > Crunchyroll > Clear Cache / Clear Data. Restart, update and reinstall the app if needed. Clearing data signs you out and can remove local app state. See the official Fire TV steps.

Roku, Samsung, LG, Android TV, Apple TV and Chromecast
- Restart the television or stick; for a power reset, unplug it for roughly 30 seconds before reconnecting.
- Install firmware and Crunchyroll updates.
- Clear app data or cache only if that platform offers the option; some TVs do not expose it and some preinstalled apps cannot be removed.
- Reinstall where supported, then test another device.
PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch
Close Crunchyroll, perform a full console restart, install pending updates and power-cycle the router. Reinstall the app and use the console’s cache/storage reset only when the platform documents it; do not assume a cache command deletes or preserves saved games. Stop buffering and freezing
A high speed-test result does not guarantee continuous playback. Packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, congestion, DNS resolution, router faults and competing traffic can interrupt a stream.

- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, or test Ethernet where practical.
- Stop cloud backups, downloads, game updates and other streams.
- Move closer to the router or restart it for about 30 seconds.
- Lower Crunchyroll’s video quality temporarily; this helps an unstable connection but cannot repair crashes or DRM errors.
- Test at another time and on another device on the same network.
DNS as a later test
Crunchyroll notes that DNS settings can sometimes affect streaming and references OpenDNS and Google Public DNS in its browser guidance. Change DNS only after the simpler tests, record your original settings, and remember that DNS will not fix a crashed app, corrupt cache, unsupported device, DRM failure or an outage. No provider is universally fastest or most private for every connection.

Disable a VPN or proxy and retry on your normal local connection. Crunchyroll says these services can interfere with DRM and playback, and catalog access varies by country or region. A title unavailable while traveling or from a new IP address may be a licensing limitation rather than a broken player. Do not use a VPN to bypass regional restrictions.

When only one title, episode or language track fails
- Try another episode in the same series.
- Try another series.
- Switch subtitle or dub language.
- Test the same episode on another device and network.
If every other video works, capture the exact title, season, episode, language track and region. A single asset, subtitle/dub file or rights rule may be affected on Crunchyroll’s side.
Contact Crunchyroll with useful evidence
Contact support after the relevant branch above has failed. Include:
- Device make and model and operating-system version
- Crunchyroll app version or browser name and version
- Country or region and network type (Wi-Fi, Ethernet or mobile data)
- Whether one device, several devices, one title or all videos are affected
- Exact error code or message
- Whether the symptom is a black screen, blank page, endless spinner, buffering, freezing or a crash
- Subtitle or dub language involved, if relevant
- Steps already completed and a screenshot when safe and appropriate
These details match the information requested in Crunchyroll’s loading guidance and playback guidance.
Premium is not a playback repair
A Premium subscription can change viewing benefits, but it will not repair an outage, unstable network, DRM permission, corrupted app, unsupported device or browser problem.
