For legitimate offline viewing, download titles in the Netflix app on an iPhone, iPad, Android phone or tablet, Amazon Fire device, or supported Chromebook. You can stream on a MacBook in a browser, but not save an official offline copy to macOS.
The official answer: MacBook downloads are not supported
Netflix’s current download guidance lists iPhone, iPad, Android phones and tablets, Amazon Fire devices, and Google Chromebooks with Google Play Store support. Its troubleshooting documentation also says downloads are unavailable on Windows devices. macOS is not included. Watching Netflix in Safari, Chrome, Firefox, or another Mac browser is online streaming, not offline playback. Browser cache is not a user-accessible movie file. Downloads made on a phone or tablet are encrypted, tied to that device and the Netflix app, and cannot be copied to a MacBook as MP4 files. An Apple-silicon Mac does not automatically receive the iPhone or iPad app, either.

1. Download on an iPhone or iPad
This is the safest official option for a flight, hotel, commute, or any period without internet.

Steps
- Install or update the Netflix app from the App Store.
- Sign in to your Netflix account.
- Open a film or series and select the Download icon. For a series, use the icon beside an episode or the season-download control when shown.
- Open Downloads in the Netflix app to watch without an internet connection.
Netflix recommends using Wi-Fi for downloads. The title remains encrypted inside the app on the downloading device; it cannot be transferred to your MacBook as an ordinary video. Availability depends on the title, plan, region, device and current licensing.
2. Use an Android, Fire tablet, or supported Chromebook
Netflix also supports downloads on Android phones and tablets, Amazon Fire devices, and Chromebooks that have the Google Play Store. Install the Netflix app, sign in, open a downloadable title, and select Download. On a Chromebook, confirm that Google Play Store support is present; not every Chromebook qualifies.

This is useful when you want a larger, laptop-like screen without modifying your MacBook. As with iPhone and iPad downloads, playback is app-controlled and device-bound rather than an exportable file.
3. Commercial third-party downloaders for Mac
Some vendors advertise software that logs into a streaming service and saves Netflix titles as MP4, MKV, or MOV files. TuneFab, for example, advertises macOS support, those output formats, subtitle and audio options, and a perpetual price of $99.95 on its Netflix product page. Its broader VideOne page has also displayed a “starts at $19.95” price signal. What to check before buying
- The software is not Netflix’s official app, and Netflix may change authentication, encryption, or playback in ways that break it.
- You still need an active Netflix subscription and access to the title in your country or region, according to the vendor’s FAQ.
- Claims such as “lossless,” “permanent,” “1080p,” “3×,” or “unlimited” are marketing claims, not established guarantees.
- Review credential handling, privacy policy, malware reputation, refund conditions, renewal terms, and supported macOS versions.
- A trial may be restricted; TuneFab says its OTT trial allows only the first five minutes of each video.
Do not enter Netflix credentials into unknown software, and do not assume a downloaded file is lawful to keep or share. Compatibility and legality can vary by title, jurisdiction and service terms. This route is unsupported and should be considered only if you specifically require a local file and accept those risks.
4. Recording, mirroring, or emulation
Screen recording, AirPlay or other mirroring, cloud recording, and attempts to run mobile software through compatibility layers are commonly promoted as “solutions,” but they are poor substitutes for a download.

- Digital rights management can produce a black screen, missing audio, or a failed mirror even when normal streaming works.
- Recording takes the full runtime, can lose quality or synchronization, and may create very large files.
- App installation, Netflix login, DRM playback, downloading, and output capture are separate compatibility problems; Apple silicon does not guarantee any of them.
- Use may conflict with Netflix’s terms or copyright law depending on your purpose and jurisdiction. No DRM-bypass instructions are appropriate here.
macOS’s built-in recording tools do not turn protected Netflix playback into an official offline feature. Treat these methods as experimental and generally avoid them.

Running Windows through Boot Camp, Parallels, or another virtual machine is not a dependable Netflix-download solution. Netflix’s current help page says downloads are unavailable on Windows devices, so virtualization adds cost and complexity without establishing offline support. Do not buy Windows virtualization software solely for this purpose.

Official-download troubleshooting
No Download button
The title may not be licensed for downloads in your region, your device or operating-system version may be unsupported, the app may need updating, or a plan or title-specific limit may have been reached. Try another title rather than assuming the app is broken. Netflix documents title availability and limits in its troubleshooting guidance.
Plan and title limits
Netflix’s current help material says ad-supported plans may allow 15 total downloads per device per calendar month. Ad-free plans can allow up to 100 active downloads per device, subject to the number of devices in the plan. Some titles also have title-specific or yearly download limits. These rules can change, so check your plan and the title before travel. See the ad-supported download-limit page, title re-download limits, and yearly title limits.
Downloads disappear or expire
Licensing and title restrictions can make a download expire, so open the Netflix app and verify playback before leaving Wi-Fi. Reinstalling the official app can delete downloads saved on that device and sign you out; it is not a casual first troubleshooting step.

- Need legitimate offline Netflix: use an iPhone, iPad, Android device, Fire tablet, or compatible Chromebook.
- Already have reliable internet on your MacBook: stream through a supported browser.
- Need a larger portable screen: a supported tablet or Chromebook is more defensible than modifying macOS.
- Need a normal video file on macOS: third-party software is the only category that advertises this, but it is unsupported, variable, paid, and legally sensitive.
- Considering Parallels or screen recording solely for Netflix: do not treat either as a reliable official solution.
