First find out whether the crackle is in OBS’s local recording, the live stream, or only one monitoring path. Then check sample-rate consistency, audio buffering and timestamps, duplicate capture, mixer clipping, and system load—in that order. Crackling has several possible causes, so a bitrate change or hardware purchase is not a reliable first fix.
1. Find where the crackle occurs
Use the same OBS scene, audio source, and routing you use for the lofi stream. Make a short local recording, then compare it with the live stream and with what you hear through OBS monitoring, if enabled. OBS recommends testing settings before a stream: OBS streaming guide.
- The local recording and stream both crackle: Start with the audio source, device formats, capture configuration, and mixer levels.
- The local recording is clean but the stream crackles: Investigate the live output path and compare the stream using a separate playback device or connection. This points away from some local-source problems, but does not prove the cause.
- Only OBS monitoring crackles: Check the monitoring device and route separately; monitoring alone does not establish that viewers hear the same artifact.
Write down which path has the problem and when it happens. That gives you a baseline for controlled changes.
2. Check sample rates across the audio chain
Compare the sample rate selected in OBS with the formats set for the actual playback and capture devices in your operating system. Include any routing or virtual-audio software between the source and OBS. OBS Analyzer identifies mismatched rates as a possible cause of drift or distortion and recommends 48 kHz in its diagnostic guidance: OBS Log Analyzer.

- In OBS, open Settings → Audio and note the selected Sample Rate.
- Open your operating system’s sound settings for each active playback and capture device. Check its selected format; labels and locations vary by operating system and device.
- Check the sample rate used by routing software, if present. Aim for consistent formats across the active chain; 48 kHz is the recommendation in OBS Analyzer’s guidance.
- Change one setting at a time, then reinitialize the affected application or device as needed. Make another local recording before testing the stream.
Do not change an inactive device’s format just because it appears in a settings list. Verify which device OBS and the lofi playback route actually use.
3. Read OBS logs for buffering or device clues
Check the OBS log from a session in which the problem occurred. The OBS Log Analyzer can help identify messages such as sample-rate mismatches or maximum audio buffering. Treat those messages as clues, not a diagnosis: the Analyzer describes maximum buffering in relation to high system load and possible audio-source interruption, and also notes incorrect device timestamps as a possible contributor.

- Maximum audio buffering: Note whether it coincides with the crackle or other workload. Restarting OBS is suggested by the Analyzer as a way to reset buffering; retest and see whether the warning returns.
- Device or timestamp clues: Record which device is named and whether it changes, disconnects, or resumes during the session. Avoid toggling timestamp settings without a reason tied to that device or log evidence.
- No relevant warning: Continue through the capture and level checks; a clean or inconclusive log does not rule out every audio-path problem.
4. Eliminate duplicate audio capture
Check whether the same device is being captured twice—for example, once as a global device in Settings → Audio and again through an Audio Input Capture or Audio Output Capture source in an active scene. OBS warns that capturing the same device through both paths can cause echo: OBS audio sources guide.
- Identify the one intended capture path for each playback or input device.
- In Settings → Audio, note the devices selected for global audio.
- Inspect every active scene for Audio Input Capture and Audio Output Capture sources using those same devices.
- Disable or remove only the unintended duplicate, then record and listen again.
The device-timestamps option documented by OBS is Windows-only. Test it only if the affected device or log symptoms make it relevant, and change one setting at a time; it is not a universal crackling fix. See OBS audio sources guidance.

5. Check for clipping in the OBS mixer
Watch the OBS mixer while the lofi audio is playing and when the artifact occurs. OBS says final stream or recording audio must stay below 0 dBFS to avoid clipping distortion: OBS audio mixer guide.
- If a meter reaches or exceeds 0 dBFS, reduce the source level or its mixer gain and make a new recording.
- If the meter remains below 0 dBFS, clipping is less likely to explain the crackle, but other causes remain possible.
Do not treat every crackle as clipping: a level change will not correct a sample-rate, buffering, duplicate-capture, or device problem.

6. Check whether system load matches the problem
If buffering warnings or interruptions occur alongside heavy CPU or other system activity, close unnecessary workloads and repeat the same test. OBS documents performance and resource issues that can affect rendering and encoding: OBS encoding performance troubleshooting. The Analyzer separately associates maximum audio buffering with high system load. These are related checks, not proof that video encoding overload caused an audio artifact.
Keep the OBS log and note what was running when the crackle occurred. If the problem persists with the same scene and source under lighter load, continue isolating the audio path instead of assuming a general performance issue.

7. Isolate hardware only after the software checks
If the crackle persists, test whether it follows a particular interface, capture device, USB port, or routing driver. Change one element at a time and compare recordings. If the issue follows one component across controlled tests, investigate its connection and driver.
A past OBS forum discussion proposed shared USB bandwidth for one capture-card setup, but that is anecdotal and configuration-specific—not evidence that a powered hub or controller card is a general remedy. See the discussion: OBS forum: “Crackling Audio”. Do not buy replacement hardware unless tests point to it.
Keep network symptoms separate from audio symptoms
OBS describes dropped video frames as a connection-stability or bitrate issue: OBS network troubleshooting. Dropped frames and crackling audio are different symptoms. If OBS reports dropped frames, investigate the network path on its own; changing the stream bitrate should not be treated as an assumed cure for audio crackling.
Quick diagnostic map
| What you observe | Where to investigate next |
|---|---|
| Crackle in both local recording and stream | Device formats, capture routes, mixer peaks, buffering, and system load. |
| Clean local recording; crackle only on the stream | Compare the live output and playback paths; the recording comparison narrows the possibilities but does not identify a single cause. |
| Maximum audio buffering appears in the log | Check timing against system load and device behavior; restart OBS as a controlled test. |
| Same device selected globally and in an active scene | Remove the unintended duplicate capture and retest. |
| Mixer peaks reach or exceed 0 dBFS | Lower source or mixer gain, then record again. |
| Crackle follows one device or connection | Test its driver and connection in isolation before considering replacement. |
