First find out whether the stream is breaking on its way to YouTube or buffering only for viewers. Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and timestamped errors, then compare the watch page on another device or network. If the feed is unstable, match your encoder to the connection’s sustained upload capacity, allow 20% headroom, use a two-second keyframe interval, and choose normal latency for a prerecorded channel.
First identify where the buffering starts
There are two different problems that look alike to a viewer: an unstable feed being sent to YouTube, and playback interruptions on a viewer’s device or network. Changing encoder settings will not fix a viewer-side Wi-Fi or network problem, and changing the viewer’s settings will not repair a failing incoming feed.
- Ask whether the problem affects every viewer or only a particular device, household, or network.
- Open the public watch page on a second device and, if possible, a different network. Compare what happens with the stream-health status in YouTube Live Control Room.
- In Live Control Room, inspect the health indicator and timestamped error messages. Resolve explicit bitrate, codec, audio, or keyframe warnings before changing settings at random. YouTube says the dashboard checks the incoming feed and displays errors alongside its health indicator (Live streaming error messages).
If Control Room reports a problem, troubleshoot the feed sent to YouTube. If its health is clean while only some viewers report buffering, focus first on those viewers’ devices and connections. YouTube notes that network congestion and other factors can interrupt playback even when a connection otherwise appears good (Buffering or loading videos).
Check the upload connection at the streaming location
For creator-side buffering or stream-health errors, measure sustained outbound upload capacity where the encoder is actually running, ideally at the time the channel usually has trouble. Download speed is not the relevant measure. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom above the total outgoing stream bitrate; include a simultaneous backup feed, if you send one, in that total (Streaming tips).

For example, a 5 Mbps stream needs at least 6 Mbps of upload capacity under that 20% calculation. That is a calculation, not a separate YouTube-published threshold. Audio, a backup feed, other outgoing traffic, shared-network use, and normal variation can all raise the capacity you need in practice. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. Do not rely on a short peak reading or a plan’s advertised maximum as proof that the connection can sustain the stream.
These recommendations are general YouTube guidance, not an India-specific ISP comparison. No national speed figure can establish what works at a particular Indian address. Test the actual connection, at the actual streaming location and usual streaming time; check whether other users or devices are consuming bandwidth.

Choose a bitrate that fits the video and upload
Use YouTube’s current encoder table for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you have selected. For H.264, YouTube recommends the following reference bitrates (accessed in 2026):

These are recommendations for the listed H.264 profiles, not a guarantee that a connection can deliver them reliably. YouTube’s encoder guidance distinguishes H.264 from AV1 and H.265, so consult the complete current table rather than applying these H.264 figures to another codec (YouTube live encoder settings).

If sustained upload cannot support the selected profile plus headroom, reduce resolution or frame rate and use the corresponding bitrate recommendation. YouTube’s error guidance also advises considering a lower resolution when bandwidth is insufficient. Avoid increasing bitrate to improve picture quality if the connection cannot carry it steadily.
Set keyframes, bitrate mode, and latency
- Bitrate mode: Use constant bitrate (CBR) for the stream profile.
- Keyframe interval: Set two seconds; YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. Its error page warns that keyframes sent too infrequently can cause buffering (Live streaming error messages).
- Codec and protocol: Use a codec and delivery protocol supported by YouTube’s current encoder guidance, and follow the settings for that exact combination.
- Latency: Choose normal latency for a prerecorded channel that does not need real-time interaction. Lower latency reduces the viewer’s read-ahead buffer and may increase playback interruptions. YouTube identifies normal latency as the suitable setting for non-interactive streams and the option with the lowest viewer buffering among its latency modes (Live streaming latency).
Test the full 24/7 playback chain before leaving it unattended
Encoder health is only part of a prerecorded stream. Test the exact playback and delivery setup you intend to run continuously, including the source video, audio, encoder, network, and YouTube preview.

- Test with representative moving video and audio, not just a static screen or silent sample.
- Preview the stream in Live Control Room and watch for health warnings and timestamped errors.
- Confirm the source player continues through the playlist or loop and that its files remain available to the playback process.
- If you use a backup encoder, test failover rather than assuming it will take over correctly.
- Monitor the source playback process as well as YouTube’s stream health; a healthy incoming feed cannot compensate for a player that stops supplying video.
YouTube recommends testing, checking the preview and stream health, and testing backup-encoder failover. Checking local source playback is an additional operational safeguard for a prerecorded 24/7 setup, not a substitute for YouTube’s feed diagnostics.

Ask an affected viewer to try another device and network, and compare the same public watch page with viewers who are not affected. If the issue follows one device or connection, changing the encoder may make the stream worse for everyone else without fixing that viewer’s problem.

Where YouTube offers a broadcast-delay option, have viewers use the normal or default delay rather than a decreased-delay option. Less delay can mean less buffer and more interruptions. YouTube also transcodes live streams into multiple formats for viewers, but transcoding does not prevent problems in the incoming feed or in a viewer’s own network.
