Yes. A viewer can join a channel membership while the channel is running a 24/7 YouTube live stream, provided the channel offers memberships and the viewer can access and complete YouTube’s Join flow. YouTube explains how viewers become members during a live stream, but does not specify a separate rule for continuous broadcasts; applying its general guidance to a 24/7 stream is an inference. Joining a membership is different from joining the stream
“Join” can mean signing up for a paid channel membership or simply watching the live broadcast. These are separate actions. Channel memberships are monthly payments for channel-specific perks; a public live stream can remain viewable to people who are not members. Whether a particular viewer sees the Join option depends on channel and viewer eligibility and availability. What happens when someone becomes a member during the stream?
YouTube says that when a viewer becomes a channel member during that channel’s live stream, a bright green “New Member” message appears in live chat and the viewer’s profile picture is pinned at the top of chat for five minutes. What can affect whether you see Join?
- The channel must offer memberships, and the viewer must be able to complete YouTube’s membership purchase flow.
- Membership onboarding is subject to eligibility, location availability, and YouTube’s policies. The availability of a Join control for a particular channel, account, location, or device is not established by the general guidance alone.
- Live streaming has separate requirements: YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. These are requirements for streaming, not a special membership rule for 24/7 broadcasts. See YouTube’s live-streaming overview.
For creators running a 24/7 channel
A continuous schedule is not identified in YouTube’s membership guidance as a barrier to viewers joining. That conclusion applies the general rule for becoming a member during a live stream; YouTube’s cited guidance does not separately address 24/7 broadcasts. Membership perks and any members-only stream or chat restrictions still depend on the creator’s settings.
