If the meter falls, check the files and their selected audio tracks. If the meter stays active but only monitoring is silent, check a recording before changing the stream. If the recording is clean but YouTube is not, investigate the stream connection and health.
Locate the gap before changing settings
Reproduce a transition between the affected videos and compare three signals: OBS’s mixer meter, a local recording, and the public YouTube stream. OBS documents its input-level indicators as a way to see whether audio is reaching the mixer; the comparison helps separate source, monitoring, and delivery symptoms. It is a diagnostic method, not a guarantee that any one cause applies to your setup. OBS Audio Mixer Technical Details
- The meter drops at the boundary: inspect the end of the outgoing file, the start of the next file, playlist order, and the audio track selected for each item.
- The meter stays active, but headphones are silent: check a local recording or the stream output before assuming viewers hear silence. Monitoring can fail independently.
- The local recording is continuous, but YouTube has a gap: check OBS’s connection and dropped-frame symptoms, then YouTube’s stream health. A network issue is one possibility, not a proven explanation for every audio gap.
Check the OBS playback source and its audio track
For a playlist of separate videos
OBS’s VLC Video source is designed for playlists. Open the source’s properties and check that the intended files and order are present, Loop Playlist is enabled if the list should repeat, and the chosen Audio Track exists in every item. If a gap affects only certain transitions, inspect those two files individually in OBS; files can differ in their audio tracks or formats. OBS lists network caching among the VLC source settings, but its documentation does not establish that raising the cache fixes gaps between local files, so do not treat a cache change as a targeted remedy without evidence. For one file that should replay
OBS Media Source supports audio/video files and has a separate Loop setting. Check that setting when a single file should repeat. The option Show nothing when playback ends controls what is shown after playback finishes; it is a visual end-of-playback behavior, not proof of why audio went silent. Use a continuous file if playlist transitions remain audible
If the gap occurs only between playlist items after you have checked their tracks and playback settings, one practical workaround is to join the material into a continuous media file with the desired transitions already prepared. This is a production workaround, not a fix promised by OBS documentation. Play the resulting file through the same OBS setup, record a test covering the transition, and listen to that recording before using it in a 24/7 broadcast.
Separate monitoring symptoms from stream problems
Do not treat old issue reports as evidence of a universal defect in current OBS. An OBS report opened in 2020 described unexpected behavior with a VLC playlist alternating video and audio files; it concerned OBS 25.0.8 / 26.0.0-rc1 and was closed as not planned. OBS Studio issue #3410

A different report opened in 2020 described audio cut shortly before a playlist clip ended while monitoring with OBS 26.0.2. The reporter said streaming and recording were unaffected. That is a historical, configuration-specific report—not proof that a current release has the same issue or that your viewers hear the cut. OBS Studio issue #3712
If only the public YouTube stream has gaps
When a local recording contains continuous audio but the public stream does not, inspect OBS’s connection state and dropped-frame indicators, then check the stream’s health in YouTube. OBS’s connection guide discusses dropped frames and intermittent disconnections caused by the connection to the ingest server or an inability to sustain the bitrate.
