If OBS preview is black, begin with the scene and source—not the bitrate. If OBS looks normal but YouTube is black or frozen, check OBS rendering, encoding, and connection indicators. That comparison narrows the investigation; it does not by itself prove the cause.
Locate the black screen before changing settings
Compare the OBS preview with the live YouTube player, preferably from another device or a trusted viewer. Note whether the whole scene is black, a single source is black, or the image freezes or buffers. Keep the distinction in mind: a black source in OBS and a delivery problem can look similar to viewers but call for different fixes.
- OBS preview is black: start with the selected scene, source visibility, order, position, size, and the source-specific checks below.
- Only one source is black: troubleshoot that source type—for example, Game Capture, media playback, a browser page, or an input device.
- OBS preview is correct, but YouTube is black or freezing: check rendering/encoding status and connection indicators before changing scene composition.
- Viewers report buffering or loading: compare from another device or network. Buffering can occur even without dropped frames, and viewer devices, locations, and network conditions differ.
Check the scene and its source layout
In OBS, select the scene intended for the live stream and inspect its Sources list. A source can be present but hidden, covered, or positioned outside the visible canvas.
- In Scenes, select the scene that should be live.
- In Sources, check the eye icon beside the expected picture source. Turn visibility on if it is off.
- Check the source order. Sources higher in the list render above lower sources and can cover them. Temporarily hide the sources above the expected picture one at a time to identify an opaque image, color, browser, or other layer covering it. Restore sources you still need.
- Select the picture source and inspect its bounding box, position, and size. Confirm that it is within the canvas and not reduced, cropped, or moved out of view.
- Look for a different scene selected for the live output than the one you are inspecting. Confirm the intended scene is active.
OBS interface wording may vary by version, so use the scene and source controls rather than relying on a particular menu label. If the preview becomes visible after changing a source’s visibility, order, or transform, you have identified a scene-composition issue; there is no reason to start by raising bitrate.

Match the fix to the source that is black
Game Capture
Game Capture is available on Windows only. Confirm that the source targets the game or window you intend to capture and that its capture mode fits the game. Some games require OBS to run as administrator; some have known conflicts. A game running full-screen may stop rendering to the capture while it is alt-tabbed. If Game Capture remains blank, try Window Capture where suitable. On macOS or Linux, use supported screen or window capture sources instead.
On a multi-GPU computer, OBS and the game may be assigned to different GPUs. Check that they use the same high-performance GPU. If the game image disappears only when you switch away from it, test whether it returns when the game is in the foreground; this can distinguish that behavior from a hidden or covered scene source.

Media Source or VLC playlist
For a documentary or other prerecorded programme, check that the file is still available and plays correctly, then inspect what happens when playback reaches the end. OBS documents Media Source’s Loop option as off by default, while VLC Video documents Loop Playlist as on by default. Those are documented defaults, not a guarantee about your current version or configuration.
- For a single video that should repeat, check the Media Source loop setting.
- For a playlist, check whether Loop Playlist is enabled if the sequence should repeat.
- Check whether the source becomes inactive or stops displaying an image at end-of-playback. Match the playback behavior to the intended 24/7 schedule.
If the scene goes black after a predictable duration, compare the time of the failure with the end of the video or playlist. That pattern points to playback behavior more directly than a bitrate change does.

Browser Source
Check whether the page still loads and whether its external dependencies are available. Reloading or inspecting the page is a practical first check, not a guaranteed OBS fix. Browser sources can also consume system resources, especially in complex scenes, so consider their workload if OBS reports rendering or encoding strain.
Camera, capture card, or other video input
OBS video capture sources are used for webcams, capture cards, and other devices. Confirm the device is powered, the intended input is selected, and a usable signal reaches it. If another application may be using the device, close that application and check again. For an HDMI capture setup, test another cable, input, or source device if available before concluding the capture hardware has failed. A replacement is warranted only when the evidence points to a faulty or inadequate input device.

Display or window capture
Confirm that the source points to the display or window you mean to show, and that the target is open. Platform support and permissions can differ; use the capture source supported by your operating system. If the source is the only black element, continue diagnosing that capture path rather than treating the whole stream as a connection failure.

OBS uses GPU time to composite and render scenes. If OBS reports rendering lag or encoding overload, the machine may not be keeping up with the scene workload. OBS’s performance guidance notes that sources consume resources and complex scenes can exceed system capacity. This is a separate diagnostic branch from a single source that is simply hidden or has no input signal.

- Reduce competing GPU workload while OBS is streaming.
- Simplify the scene, or reduce resource-heavy browser sources and filters.
- If the system still cannot keep up, consider a lower output resolution or frame rate.
- Check whether the problem appears only when a demanding source or scene is active.
These steps are appropriate when performance indicators or the symptoms point to a workload problem. They do not prove that performance caused a particular source to go black.
Investigate connection problems only when OBS points to delivery
Dropped frames indicate an unstable connection to the remote ingest server or that the connection cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Enough dropped frames can disconnect a stream. If OBS preview is already black, fix the source first; changing bitrate is not the first response to a black preview.
- Check OBS’s dropped-frame and connection indicators when the problem occurs.
- Compare the configured bitrate with the upload connection’s stable capacity. If the connection cannot sustain it, reduce bitrate and observe whether the dropped-frame problem changes.
- Try a wired network connection if available, and check whether a VPN or security software is interfering.
- Check network drivers and connection stability. Network problems are typically outside OBS’s control.
- Dynamic bitrate may help as a workaround by lowering quality when the connection degrades; it does not repair the underlying connection problem.
Do not equate viewer buffering with OBS dropped frames. OBS notes that viewers can have buffering or loading issues even when dropped frames are absent; the viewer’s device, location, and network may be involved.
