To forecast before the month is reported, calculate monthly views ÷ 1,000 × your channel’s ad-only RPM. Treat that forecast as an estimate: views do not all show ads, and YouTube does not guarantee that eligible live ad slots will serve.
How to calculate monthly ad revenue
For a completed month, the best figure is YouTube Analytics’ estimated ad revenue for the relevant stream content and date range. For a forecast, use this formula:
Estimated monthly ad revenue = monthly views ÷ 1,000 × channel-specific ad-only RPM
Use an ad-only RPM from comparable content on your own channel when available. YouTube’s broader RPM can combine ad revenue with some non-ad revenue sources, so using it for an ad-only projection makes the result approximate. Do not substitute CPM: it measures advertiser cost, not what the creator earns.

YouTube’s example illustrates why the metrics differ: 5,000 views, 1,500 monetized playbacks and 2,000 ad impressions, alongside $7 in advertiser spend, produce a $3.50 CPM and a $4.67 playback-based CPM. Those figures explain the definitions; they are not typical rates or a forecast for your channel. YouTube’s explanation of ad revenue analytics notes that creator revenue is not CPM multiplied by views.
Measure a completed month in YouTube Analytics
- Choose a calendar-month date range. Record the reporting time zone if you plan to compare the result with another report or channel.
- Filter to the loop stream’s content. Where the report supports it, use the Live filter to review live-stream ad revenue. YouTube also provides a liveOrOnDemand dimension in applicable channel reports for distinguishing live activity from on-demand replay activity. YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance explains the Live filter; the YouTube Analytics API channel reports document applicable report dimensions.
- Read estimated ad revenue for the selected content and dates. The API metric estimatedAdRevenue is estimated net revenue from Google-sold advertising for the selected date range and region. It is subject to month-end adjustments and excludes partner-sold or partner-served ads. Google’s metric definitions distinguish it from estimatedRevenue, which includes Google-sold ads and non-advertising sources.
- Keep live and replay scope consistent. Include live activity, replay activity or both according to the question you are answering. If the selected content and date range already include replay earnings, do not add those earnings a second time.
- Recheck after month-end. Estimated revenue can be adjusted, so treat the initial figure as an estimate rather than a final settled amount.
Forecast when the month’s revenue is not available
Divide projected monthly views by 1,000, then multiply by an ad-only RPM observed on your own channel for comparable streams. If you make low, base and high scenarios, derive them from the channel’s actual historical range rather than applying a generic RPM.

Keep the scope aligned: compare the same kind of content, date range, live-versus-replay mix and audience as far as possible. If you only have YouTube’s broader RPM, say that the output is an approximate revenue projection, not ad-only earnings.
Know which metrics explain the result

Why loop-stream earnings vary
Views, playbacks and ad impressions are different
A view does not necessarily produce an ad impression, and a playback with an ad can produce multiple impressions. YouTube says live ad slots are not guaranteed to serve; its ad systems decide based on multiple factors. That is why views alone cannot establish ad earnings. YouTube’s live-stream guidance covers live ad serving.
Mid-roll configuration affects opportunity, not certainty
YouTube supports automatic and manual live mid-rolls and recommends automatic mid-rolls. Its system may pause ads around high-engagement moments and some viewer interactions. YouTube reported that creators who chose live automatic mid-roll ads saw, on average, over 20% uplift in in-stream ad revenue per hour. That was a platform-reported comparison between channels with and without live automatic mid-roll ads, averaged across 207 countries in January 2024; it does not predict the result for an individual stream. Audience geography and season change advertiser demand
CPM can change with viewer geography and time of year, including higher advertiser bids around holidays. A raw CPM difference between months or channels may reflect different audiences or seasonal demand, not a change in the loop itself. YouTube describes these sources of variation.
RPM can shift for reasons beyond ads
Because RPM can include non-ad sources and is affected by the share of views that are not monetized, it can move even when it does not describe ad-only earnings. Use estimated ad revenue for a measured ad total and label any forecast based on broader RPM as approximate.

Compare two months or loop streams fairly
- Compare estimated ad revenue for the same calendar dates and reporting scope.
- Keep live and replay activity separate, or include both consistently.
- Review views alongside monetized playbacks and the monetized-playback rate.
- Compare ad impressions per monetized playback and playback-based CPM.
- Check audience geography and mid-roll configuration before interpreting a CPM or revenue difference.
These comparisons help explain a change; none turns a forecast into a guarantee. YouTube’s channel reports reference describes applicable live/on-demand reporting, while its ad revenue analytics guide explains why geography and season affect CPM.
