Netflix Party is now called Teleparty, but its traditional browser extension does not run directly on an iPhone or iPad. Teleparty’s support page still describes iOS as unavailable or in closed beta, while a Teleparty app listing is visible in the U.S. App Store. Because those sources conflict, don’t assume the app will work for you or pay for it before testing. The dependable options are to run Teleparty on a supported computer, use SharePlay only if Netflix offers it in your setup, or start the same title together with a manual countdown.
What happened to Netflix Party?
Netflix Party was renamed Teleparty. It is a third-party service—not a Netflix feature—and its established browser-extension workflow synchronizes playback and provides chat. Netflix’s iPhone and iPad app does not have a built-in “Netflix Party” button. Be careful not to confuse Netflix itself, Teleparty’s desktop extension, its separate mobile-app listing, and other apps that use the phrase “watch party.”
Can you use Teleparty directly on an iPhone or iPad?
Not through the traditional browser-extension method. Teleparty’s support documentation lists Chrome, Edge, and Opera for its extension and says iOS is not currently supported, describing it as closed beta. Safari on an iPhone or iPad cannot install and run that desktop extension.
There is a conflicting signal: the U.S. App Store listing presents a Teleparty app for iPhone and iPad and says it requires iOS or iPadOS 17.6 or later. That listing is not proof that every user has a publicly supported, working iOS service. Availability, features, and behavior may vary, and the listing’s developer, WP Interactive Media, Inc., says Teleparty is not affiliated with or a product of any streaming service.

If you want to try the app, check whether it appears in your own App Store, confirm your device meets the listed OS requirement, and test the actual party flow before buying anything. Make sure the title loads and plays, audio and chat work, invitation links open correctly, and the app remains usable when you switch between video and chat.
Use Teleparty on a computer for synchronized playback
What everyone needs
- The host needs a desktop or laptop with Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or Opera and the Teleparty extension.
- Each participant needs eligible access to the streaming service and the ability to play the selected title. A shared account works only if its plan permits the intended simultaneous viewers.
- Everyone needs the same title to be available in their country or region; catalogs can differ.
- A stable internet connection helps, especially if participants also use a voice or video call.
Host a party
- On a computer, install the Teleparty extension in Chrome, Edge, or Opera.
- Sign in to Netflix in that browser and open the show or movie.
- Start playback, then select the red TP button to create the party. Teleparty’s official instructions call for a supported streaming service to be open with a video playing.
- Copy the invitation link and send it to the group. Keep the browser open while the party is running.
Join from an iPhone or iPad
Do not count on opening the invitation in Safari and joining a fully functioning Teleparty room. A mobile link may open Netflix or lead to an unsupported flow. If an iOS participant cannot join, use the iPhone or iPad for FaceTime or chat while watching through a supported computer setup, or switch to a manual synchronized start.
On a supported computer, a participant may need the extension too: opening the invitation link alone might only open the video page. Follow the party prompt and activate TP after the video is open.

Try the Teleparty iOS app only after checking it
If the app is visible in your local App Store, install it only from that official listing and review the developer and OS requirement before proceeding. Sign in through the app’s own Netflix flow, then test a planned or otherwise suitable party before purchasing Premium. The App Store listing claims synchronized playback and group chat, but user reviews report issues such as loading failures, missing audio, and awkward invitation links. Those are reports, not controlled tests, but they are good reasons to verify the basics before paying.

If playback or joining fails, the cause may be the app’s availability or implementation rather than Netflix itself; repeatedly reinstalling Netflix may not fix it. Teleparty’s support page and the App Store listing also show different annual Premium prices: $47.88 on the support page and $49.99 in the U.S. listing, with $6.59 monthly shown by both. These are source-specific listed prices, not a guaranteed price for every region or checkout; verify the amount before subscribing.
Use SharePlay only if Netflix offers it
Apple SharePlay can synchronize supported video apps during a FaceTime call, but Apple’s general instructions do not establish that Netflix supports SharePlay for every title or device. The relevant test is whether Netflix presents a SharePlay option in your current setup. Apple also says each participant must have access to the content, and support can depend on the app, title, device, and region. See Apple’s SharePlay requirements.

- Start a FaceTime call with the group.
- Open a compatible video app and choose a title.
- Tap Play and select SharePlay if the app offers that option.
- Have each participant confirm access to the title.
If Netflix does not show SharePlay, that does not necessarily mean you did something wrong; the app or content may not support it. SharePlay is also different from AirPlay: Netflix says AirPlay from iPhone and iPad is not supported.
Start Netflix together with a manual countdown
For an all-mobile group, this is a straightforward fallback when Teleparty or SharePlay is unavailable. It does not automatically synchronize video or add Teleparty chat, but it avoids relying on an unsupported extension.
- Start a FaceTime, Messages, or other voice or video call.
- Agree on the exact title and episode. Confirm everyone can play it.
- Have everyone open Netflix and pause at the same starting point.
- Count down together—“3, 2, 1, play.”
- If playback drifts, pause briefly and have everyone resume on a timekeeper’s cue.
Use the call for conversation rather than trying to share the Netflix video feed. Screen sharing or mirroring may be blocked or show a black screen; do not try to bypass Netflix’s content protections.

Fix common problems
The TP button is missing
The desktop extension does not run in iPhone or iPad Safari. On a computer, confirm that the extension is installed in Chrome, Edge, or Opera, that you are signed in, and that a video is actively playing on its page. Check the browser’s extensions menu if the button is hidden. Teleparty’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends reinstalling the extension if it still does not appear.
The invitation opens Netflix but not the party
On desktop, the participant may still need the extension and must activate TP after reaching the video. On iPhone or iPad, the link may simply lead to an unsupported mobile route; that is not necessarily a problem with the copied link.
One person cannot play or join
- Check that the title is available in that participant’s country.
- Confirm the participant has eligible account access and has not reached the account’s simultaneous-stream limit.
- Check that everyone is using the intended profile and a supported browser or app flow.
- Confirm the title, episode, and playback setup match across the group.
Netflix shows a black screen during sharing or mirroring
Netflix warns that some mirroring methods may not work and explicitly does not support AirPlay from iPhone or iPad. For a TV, use the Netflix app on the television, a compatible casting device, or an appropriate wired connection rather than assuming AirPlay will work. Check Netflix’s casting and mirroring guidance before buying an adapter or device.

You want video and chat on one iPhone or iPad screen
Netflix says Picture-in-Picture is unavailable on ad-supported plans. Availability also depends on the device and plan, so do not rely on PiP as a universal way to watch while using another app. See Netflix’s Picture-in-Picture guidance.

Netflix’s latest iPhone and iPad app guidance lists iOS or iPadOS 18 as the requirement for the latest app; Netflix says previously downloaded versions may be redownloadable on iOS 12 or later. Check Netflix’s device guidance if the app will not install or update.
