In the YouTube app, open the video, tap Settings in the player, choose Additional settings, then tap Loop video. The video will restart automatically when it reaches the end. YouTube lists this as a standard iPhone and iPad playback control, not a YouTube Premium requirement.
Loop one YouTube video in the iPhone or iPad app
- Open the YouTube app.
- Open the video’s full watch page.
- If the controls are hidden, tap the video once.
- Tap the Settings gear.
- Tap Additional settings.
- Tap Loop video.
This is YouTube’s current official route for iPhone and iPad: YouTube’s looping instructions. Menu labels or their placement can change with app updates, so look for Loop, Loop video, or a repeat icon if your interface differs.
Repeat an entire YouTube playlist
- Start playing a playlist.
- Find the playlist controls below the video.
- Tap the Loop icon.
When playlist looping is enabled, YouTube starts the playlist again after its final video.
Repeat only the current video in a playlist
- Start the playlist and tap its Loop icon.
- Tap the same icon a second time.
- Stop when the icon displays 1.
An icon without 1 generally repeats the whole playlist; the 1 indicates that the current playlist item repeats.

Looping versus Autoplay
| Control | What happens |
|---|---|
| Loop video | The same video restarts continuously. |
| Playlist loop | The playlist repeats after its last item. |
| Playlist loop with “1” | Only the current playlist video repeats. |
| Autoplay | YouTube chooses another video after the current one ends. |
Autoplay is separate from looping. You can change it from the player or through Profile picture → Settings → Autoplay, as described in YouTube’s Autoplay help.
Do you need YouTube Premium?
No—not for ordinary looping while the YouTube app is actively playing. YouTube’s official looping instructions do not list Premium as a prerequisite. Premium is relevant to separate features such as background playback, not the basic Loop video control.

Can looping continue with the screen locked?
Looping and background playback are different. If you lock the iPhone or iPad or leave YouTube for another app, playback may pause. YouTube says background play in its mobile apps requires YouTube Premium; enabling Loop video alone does not guarantee screen-locked or background playback. See YouTube’s background-play guidance.
If “Loop video” is missing
- Confirm that you opened the full watch page, not a Home, Search, Subscriptions, or feed preview.
- Tap the video to reveal the controls.
- Open the player’s Settings gear and check Additional settings.
- Update YouTube in the App Store.
- Close and reopen the app, then restart the iPhone or iPad.
- Open
youtube.comin Safari and test the same video. - If several videos have playback problems, try another network and follow YouTube’s advice to offload and reinstall the app.
YouTube’s broader troubleshooting steps are listed at Troubleshoot streaming and video issues. Safari is a fallback, not a guaranteed duplicate of the app interface: open the video’s watch page, inspect Settings or More, and, if necessary, request the desktop site to look for the standard loop control.

When a playlist repeats the wrong way
- If the loop icon does not show 1, the playlist—not just the current video—is set to repeat.
- Turn looping off and on again, then restart the app.
- Test another playlist to determine whether the issue is limited to one containing private, unavailable, or restricted videos.
- Try Safari if the app continues to behave unexpectedly.
Reports of different playlist behavior in iOS Safari and the app are anecdotal, not confirmation of a platform-wide defect.
Videos that need extra qualification
YouTube’s looping help describes videos and playlists but does not promise identical controls for every content type. Shorts may use a different interface; livestreams, rentals, purchases, and age-restricted videos can have their own playback restrictions. Do not assume that the regular Loop video menu will appear in each case.

Made-for-Kids status does not, on the available documentation, universally prevent looping. However, YouTube says its miniplayer is unavailable for Shorts and videos marked Made for Kids; see the miniplayer guidance.

- Tap More below it.
- Tap Save.
- Choose an existing playlist or tap New playlist.
- Open the playlist and use its loop control.
YouTube documents playlist creation at Create and manage playlists. This is a fallback; the direct player control is faster. A video marked Made for Kids may have restrictions when saved from a homepage, although YouTube says it can still be added from search results.
Repeating only a short section
The official control repeats the entire video or playlist item, not a selected time range. For a short passage, manually seek back to the start, find a creator-uploaded clip containing only that section, or use a separate player or editing workflow when you have the necessary rights. Third-party downloaders and loop sites are not needed for ordinary looping and can create privacy, security, copyright, or terms-of-service risks.
