In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go live, select or set up your stream, then open Stream settings and switch on Enable DVR under Additional settings. DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume a live stream—but YouTube warns that DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours, so it is not a guarantee of rewind across a continuous 24/7 broadcast.

Turn on DVR in YouTube Studio

  1. Open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go live.
  2. Choose an existing scheduled stream or enter the stream details to create one.
  3. In the Live Control Room, select Stream or Manage, depending on the workflow, then open Stream settings.
  4. Under Additional settings, turn on Enable DVR.

YouTube documents this as a Studio setting; you do not need to buy an encoder or other hardware just to enable DVR. Interface labels can vary slightly by stream workflow. YouTube Help: DVR on live streams · YouTube Help: encoder live streaming

What viewers can do with DVR

When DVR is available, viewers can pause, rewind, and resume while the broadcast is live. Resuming continues from the point where they paused. Viewers cannot seek to a point before the live stream began. DVR is about controlling playback during the live broadcast; it does not let viewers browse earlier broadcasts.

What changes on a 24/7 broadcast

DVR has a duration caveat

YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. It does not promise a specific rewind window for a continuous 24/7 broadcast, so do not tell viewers that they can rewind the entire stream. Apple TV, Apple AirPlay, and older versions of the YouTube app may have lower rewind limits. YouTube Help: DVR on live streams

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Changing DVR while live

You can change the DVR setting during an active broadcast. YouTube says the change affects viewers who start playing the stream after the change; it does not promise an immediate change for people who are already watching. If you change the setting, viewers may therefore see different behavior depending on when they began playback.

DVR is not an archive

DVR controls pause and rewind during a live broadcast. Archiving is whether YouTube saves a replay after the broadcast ends. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a 24/7 channel, keep a local recording backup if retaining a recording matters; do not rely on the YouTube replay as the only copy. YouTube Help: archive live streams

Do not confuse DVR with encoder or latency settings

An encoder sends a video feed to YouTube; it does not control the DVR switch. In an encoder workflow, YouTube’s setup is to create or schedule the stream in Live Control Room, copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder, send the feed, check the preview, and go live. YouTube describes encoders as useful for productions such as gameplay with overlays or connected hardware, but a hardware encoder is not required to enable DVR. YouTube Help: encoder live streaming · YouTube Help: live streaming tips

Latency is separate too: it is the delay between capture by the camera or encoder and playback for viewers. YouTube notes that lower latency may increase buffering; latency does not determine whether DVR is enabled. YouTube Help: latency

Troubleshooting DVR

  • You cannot find the switch: Open the selected stream’s Stream settings and expand or inspect Additional settings. The exact path may appear under Stream or Manage depending on the workflow.
  • Viewers cannot rewind far: A long-running stream may exceed YouTube’s DVR limits; streams over 12 hours may have limited or unavailable DVR. Device and app versions can also have lower rewind limits.
  • The setting changed, but current viewers see no difference: YouTube says the change affects viewers who begin playback after the change; it does not promise an immediate change for existing viewers.
  • The replay is missing after the broadcast: Live DVR does not ensure archiving. YouTube warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured; retain a separate recording if you need a dependable copy.
  • You are looking for DVR in encoder or latency controls: Return to Live Control Room’s stream settings. DVR is a separate Studio playback setting, not an encoder or latency control.
