Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Start with 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 with CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, AAC stereo at 128 Kbps, and Rec. 709 SDR. Choose a video bitrate within YouTube’s recommended 5–14 Mbps range for 1080p30, then test it on the actual computer and internet connection you will use around the clock. If upload or encoding performance is marginal, switch to 720p30 and test again.
For an ambience stream with little audience interaction, normal latency is a sensible default. The settings are a starting profile, not a guarantee: monitor YouTube’s stream health and OBS’s dropped-frame counter during a realistic test before relying on the stream for 24/7 operation.
Recommended OBS settings for a monsoon rain stream
Use this profile as a starting point for a prerecorded rain video streamed to YouTube. The bitrate ranges are YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed in 2026; the best point within a range depends on the source, machine and sustained upload connection.
| OBS setting | Starting value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Output resolution | 1920Ă—1080 | Good starting point when the source and computer can sustain it. |
| Frame rate | 30 fps | Usually sufficient for relatively static rain visuals; 60 fps uses more encoding and upload capacity without an obvious benefit for many ambience scenes. |
| Encoder and rate control | H.264; CBR | YouTube recommends CBR for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion. |
| Video bitrate | 5–14 Mbps at 1080p30 | YouTube’s recommended H.264 range. Select a sustainable value and verify it under operating conditions. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Audio | AAC stereo, 128 Kbps | YouTube lists 44.1 kHz for stereo; keep OBS’s audio sample rate consistent with the project and source. |
| Color | Rec. 709, 8-bit SDR | The normal non-HDR path described in YouTube’s guidance. |
| Stream transport | RTMPS | YouTube recommends the encrypted version of RTMP. |
| Latency | Normal | A practical default when viewers do not need to interact in real time. |
In OBS, find the relevant controls in Settings → Video for resolution and frame rate, Settings → Output for the encoder, rate control, bitrate and keyframe interval, and Settings → Audio for the sample rate. Labels and available encoder options can vary by OBS version and hardware. Set the stream service and key under Settings → Stream.

Choose between 1080p30 and 720p30
Resolution is a trade-off between visible detail and the upload and encoding capacity you can sustain continuously. A detailed source, scene changes or overlays may need more bitrate than a nearly static image; do not assume every rain video will look good at a low bitrate.
| Output profile | YouTube H.264 bitrate guidance | When to try it |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 5–14 Mbps | Start here if your source, encoder and connection can sustain the chosen bitrate with headroom. |
| 720p30 | 3–8 Mbps | Try this if 1080p produces unstable ingestion or encoding strain; repeat the full test at the new settings. |
These are platform-recommended ranges, not required targets or guarantees of image quality. YouTube accepts up to 60 fps, but for a mostly static rain scene 30 fps is often a more efficient starting choice. That is a practical recommendation, not a measurement of a particular rain video or computer.

Set latency for an ambience stream
Choose normal latency if the stream is primarily for uninterrupted listening or background viewing and does not depend on live chat interaction. Lower latency can make interaction more immediate, but YouTube warns that it can increase buffering and make network ingestion problems affect viewers more. YouTube’s current guidance says most viewers typically experience less than 10 seconds with low latency and less than five seconds with ultra-low latency; these are typical figures, not a promise for every viewer or connection.
Test the full stream before leaving it on
Rain ambience can seem easy to stream because the image may change slowly, but a long session exposes network congestion, encoder strain, audio problems and local interruptions. YouTube’s guidance is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

- Measure upload speed where the stream will run. Test at the location and time you expect to operate. Upload capacity matters; download speed is not a substitute.
- Leave upload headroom. YouTube recommends 20% spare upload capacity beyond the total stream bitrate. Treat this as guidance rather than a stability guarantee: congestion and other people using the connection can reduce available capacity.
- Run a representative test. Use the actual rain video and audio, overlays, OBS encoder and YouTube Live Control Room preview. YouTube advises testing with audio and motion similar to the real stream.
- Check both ends. Watch YouTube stream health and OBS’s dropped-frame counter during the test. If frames drop or YouTube reports poor health, adjust and test again rather than assuming a short successful start proves 24/7 reliability.
- Confirm the broadcast details. Before going live, check the intended scheduled stream, stream key and privacy setting. Keep the key private; if it is compromised, reset it in YouTube Studio.
Choose an encoder your computer can sustain
OBS may offer hardware or software H.264 encoding, depending on the computer. There is no universally best choice for unspecified hardware: use an encoder that can maintain the selected resolution and frame rate without overload or thermal problems during a sustained run. Test the actual source and overlays for long enough to reveal recurring strain. If encoding performance is marginal, reduce the output resolution or frame rate and verify again.
Plan for power and internet interruptions
A local OBS stream depends on the computer and network equipment remaining powered and connected. A UPS for the computer and router may help bridge a brief power cut, but its runtime depends on the connected load and it cannot protect against an internet outage. It is an optional continuity measure, not an OBS requirement or an uptime guarantee. Decide how you will respond if power, connectivity or YouTube ingestion fails during an unattended session.

Troubleshoot common streaming problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS “Dropped frames” count rises; connection indicator turns yellow or red | Network path or bitrate exceeds stable upload capacity. OBS Project describes this combination as an unstable connection or one unable to keep up with the configured bitrate. | Reduce bitrate, investigate the network path and competing uploads, or switch to 720p30. Test the revised profile again. |
| YouTube stream health is poor during the test | Upload congestion, insufficient headroom or an unstable connection. | Recheck sustained upload at the operating location and time; leave the recommended 20% headroom and lower the bitrate if needed. |
| OBS struggles to encode or the output stutters | The chosen resolution, frame rate, overlays or encoder may be too demanding for the computer over time. | Try a less demanding profile, such as 720p30, and test with the full scene and source. |
| Viewers report buffering | Lower latency may be less tolerant of ingestion problems; the viewer’s own connection can also affect playback. | For an ambience stream, use normal latency if immediate interaction is not essential, then check stream health and network stability. |
| The wrong event appears, or the stream does not reach the intended broadcast | Scheduled stream, stream key or privacy selection may be incorrect. | Before going live, verify those selections in OBS and YouTube. Reset the key in YouTube Studio if it has been exposed. |

Keep the rain stream copyright-safe
Check that you have the rights to stream both the rain video and its audio on YouTube. A recording being available online or described as “ambient” does not by itself establish permission for a 24/7 rebroadcast. Review the licence terms for every asset, including music, field recordings and visuals, and retain evidence of permission. YouTube’s reused-content and copyright policies are separate considerations; consult the current rules before building a channel around repeated or third-party material.
For a local OBS workflow, configure the stream key and settings in OBS, then test the complete path through YouTube Live Control Room. For a cloud workflow, StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube rather than capturing a live camera feed.
