For offline listening, use YouTube Music Premium; its downloads stay in the app and are not MP3 files. If you need a local audio file, Reddit discussions often point to yt-dlp, but use it only for videos you own or are authorized to download. Avoid unknown converter sites: community recommendations are anecdotes, not proof of safety, legality, or current reliability.
First decide what you mean by “download audio”
These are different tasks, and the right method depends on the result you need:

YouTube says its app does not download standalone audio or MP3 files. Its official offline features save content for playback within the service. YouTube’s download FAQ and its Premium help page explain the distinction.

If all you want is to listen without a connection, use the official feature rather than extracting a file. YouTube Music Premium supports offline listening, and YouTube Premium includes broader YouTube benefits. Availability and features vary by country or region.

- Sign in to YouTube Music with an account that has the relevant subscription.
- Open an available song, album, playlist, or podcast.
- Tap or select the download control if it is offered.
- Find saved items in the app’s Downloads or Library area.
- Reconnect periodically so YouTube can verify availability.
These downloads are app- and account-bound; they are not MP3s that you can move to an old player or edit in another program. YouTube says offline content generally needs to reconnect to the internet at least once every 30 days; downloaded videos can generally play offline for up to 29 days, with some regional differences. What Reddit recommends—and what those recommendations prove
Users in Reddit discussions mention yt-dlp, graphical apps built around it, JDownloader, browser extensions, and online converters. They also report tools failing after changes to YouTube’s delivery systems, blocked converter sites, and output quality that does not match advertised claims. Examples include discussions in r/downr, r/youtubedl, and r/youtube.
Those posts are user reports, not security reviews or guarantees that a tool still works today. An online converter can expose you to deceptive buttons, aggressive ads, uncertain data handling, or malicious downloads. For an authorized local download, the official yt-dlp project is a more transparent starting point than a search-ad download button. That does not make every executable or third-party GUI automatically safe.

Download an authorized audio file with yt-dlp
Use these commands only for material you own, public-domain material, material licensed for downloading, or content for which you have permission. YouTube’s terms and copyright law are separate issues: a download may conflict with platform terms even when it is not necessarily copyright infringement, and publishing or reusing copyrighted audio can raise additional rights questions.
You need yt-dlp, a terminal, and the video URL. Some extraction, merging, and conversion tasks also need FFmpeg. Install both from their official project pages or a reputable package manager—not a randomly advertised installer.

"PLAYLIST_URL"Check the resulting file in the player or editor you plan to use. Keep attribution and license information if the license requires it. The yt-dlp FAQ explains FFmpeg requirements and format handling; the project’s format notes discuss separate audio and video streams.
MP3, M4A, or Opus?
- Opus: Often close to YouTube’s native audio stream and efficient, but some older players, car stereos, and editing tools do not support it.
- M4A/AAC: A broadly compatible choice for many phones, editors, and players. If the available stream is already compatible, conversion may be unnecessary.
- MP3: Supported almost everywhere, but making it may require conversion. Converting from another lossy format can reduce quality; converting cannot restore detail absent from the source.
A file labeled “320 kbps MP3” is not proof that the YouTube source contained 320-kbps audio. A converter can encode a lower-quality source at a higher output bitrate, making a larger file without restoring lost information. YouTube’s available streams vary by video and format, so no extraction method can guarantee lossless or studio-quality audio.

“FFmpeg is missing”
Install FFmpeg and make sure it is available in the system PATH or in a location where yt-dlp can find it. It is needed for certain separate-stream operations and conversions. See the official FAQ.

The file downloaded, but my player will not open it
The file may use Opus in a container your device does not support, be incomplete, or need conversion. Try M4A if your player supports AAC, or convert an authorized download to MP3 with the command above. Avoid repeated conversions among MP3, M4A, and Opus; each lossy re-encoding can discard more information.
It worked before, but now fails
YouTube changes its systems, so third-party tools can stop working. First update yt-dlp from its official source, check that FFmpeg is available, and try a public video that is not age-restricted. Then consult the project’s extractor notes and issue tracker. Do not enter your Google password into a downloader or upload browser cookies to a converter. Do not use cookies, tokens, or other methods to defeat access controls or anti-bot measures; they can expose your account and may lead to restrictions.
A private, members-only, or age-restricted video will not download
Do not try to bypass the restriction. Ask the creator for an authorized copy or use the official access method. This guide does not provide instructions for defeating private access, age gates, paywalls, DRM, or account controls.
The output claims an unexpectedly high bitrate
Check the source format with yt-dlp -F and remember that output bitrate is an encoding setting, not a measure of detail recovered from the original. A higher number cannot undo compression.
Downloading is not the same as permission to reuse
Before saving third-party audio, check both the platform’s terms and the rights in the material. YouTube’s Terms of Service restrict downloading except where the service authorizes it, you have permission, or applicable law allows it. Copyright rules depend on the work, license, jurisdiction, and intended use; “personal use” is not a universal exemption, and fair use is fact-specific.
For reuse in a video, podcast, remix, presentation, or commercial project, verify that permission covers that use. Check whether commercial use is allowed and whether attribution is required. A Creative Commons label on a video may not cover separately copyrighted music or other third-party material inside it. If the audio matters to a published project, obtain a direct license or use a properly licensed music source, such as the YouTube Audio Library.

- Your own upload: Retrieve the original file or use YouTube Studio where available; preserve the master and backups rather than treating a streamed copy as your archive.
- An artist’s music: Check the artist’s official store or a licensed download service.
- A creator’s lecture or documentary: Ask the creator for a downloadable original or a license suited to your use.
- Audio for a new production: Use a rights-cleared library and retain its license terms and attribution details.
