Before you start
This guide covers transferring music files that are already stored on your computer. An offline song inside Spotify, Apple Music, or another subscription app is normally an encrypted, app-managed download—not an ordinary MP3 that can be dragged to a generic player. Locate the actual files in File Explorer or Finder first.
- Your MP3 player and its model number or manual.
- A USB cable that carries data, not just power. USB-C does not guarantee data transfer.
- A Windows PC or Mac with an available USB port.
- Music you own or are licensed to copy, stored locally.
- Enough free space on the player or its microSD card.
- A backup of important player files before deleting, formatting, or changing folders.
Formats and copy methods vary by model. Generic USB mass-storage players usually accept drag-and-drop; proprietary players, older DRM-based devices, and Apple products may require software.
The quickest method: drag and drop
Windows File Explorer
- Connect the player directly to the computer. Avoid a hub while troubleshooting.
- Unlock the player and choose File Transfer, MTP, or USB storage if it asks for a USB mode.
- Open File Explorer and select This PC.
- Open the connected player or removable storage, then open its existing
MusicorMUSICfolder. - Open a second File Explorer window containing your music.
- Select songs or folders and drag them into the player’s music folder, or use copy and paste.
- Wait until the copy finishes and any “updating” or library-scan message disappears.
- Use Windows’ Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media control before unplugging. Microsoft documents this procedure for Windows 10 and 11 at Microsoft Support.
SanDisk’s Clip Sport Go instructions use this drag-and-drop process and place music in the player’s Music folder: SanDisk support. Other SanDisk models can differ.

Mac Finder
- Connect and unlock the player. Select a file-transfer mode if prompted.
- Open Finder and select the player under Locations.
- Open the existing
MusicorMUSICfolder. - Open another Finder window with your music files.
- Drag songs or folders into the player’s music folder.
- Wait for the copy and any library refresh to finish.
- Click the eject icon beside the player in Finder before disconnecting it.
Sony’s Finder guidance tells Mac users to select WALKMAN and copy music into MUSIC; files put elsewhere may not be recognized on some models (NW-WS410 guide, NW-ZX2 guide).
When synchronization software is the better choice
Use synchronization when the player maintains a library database, supports playlists, or does not appear as ordinary storage. Drag-and-drop is transparent and convenient for a few albums, but it may not create playlists, update metadata, or trigger a proprietary database scan. Sync software can select artists, albums, genres, or playlists, while automatic sync can also remove tracks when the computer’s library or selections change.
Windows Media Player Sync
For a compatible MTP player or older Walkman:
- Open Windows Media Player and connect the player.
- Open the Sync tab.
- Add specific songs, albums, artists, or playlists to the Sync list.
- Click Start Sync and wait for completion.
- Close the program and safely eject the player.
Choose selected content rather than an automatic “entire library” setup unless you have confirmed that it fits the player. Sony’s model-specific instructions are at this Walkman guide.
Transferring music to a Sony Walkman
Walkman behavior varies considerably. Compatible models support direct copying, while newer Android-based models may require selecting File Transfer after connection. Sony also documents Music Center for PC, Content Transfer, and model-specific Finder workflows. Music Center for PC replaced Media Go for applicable Windows models; Sony says Media Go support has ended (Sony support).

Some Walkmans expose internal storage and a microSD card as separate destinations. Confirm which storage location is selected before copying. Sony also advises connecting certain models directly instead of through a USB hub (Sony transfer troubleshooting).
Transferring music to an iPod
Do not assume an iPod behaves like a generic USB drive. Apple’s workflow depends on the device and operating system:

See Apple’s synchronization overview (Apple Support), Apple Devices for Windows (guide), Finder syncing (guide), and iTunes syncing (guide). Automatic synchronization can remove items from an iPod when those items are no longer in the selected computer library.
Which audio files work?
The player’s manual is the final authority. Common extensions include MP3, WMA, AAC/M4A, WAV, FLAC, OGG Vorbis, ALAC, and—on some high-resolution players—DSD. Support may be limited by bitrate, sample rate, bit depth, channel layout, file size, folder depth, or DRM.

Use ordinary, non-DRM MP3 files when compatibility matters most. Keep original lossless files on the computer and convert only when the player cannot play the source format; repeatedly converting an already compressed file can reduce quality. Sony warns that copyright-protected files may copy but still fail to play (Sony’s DRM guidance).
Where should the files go?
Use the player’s existing Music or MUSIC folder unless its manual specifies another destination. A useful organization is:
Music/
Artist/
Album/

Folders make browsing easier, but many players sort by embedded ID3 or other metadata. Incorrect artist, album, or title information therefore points to a tag problem, not necessarily a folder problem. Do not rename or delete system folders.
How to disconnect safely
Never unplug during an active copy, database refresh, or storage-write indicator. On Windows, use Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media; on Mac, click Finder’s eject icon. Sony warns that disconnecting during transfer can leave damaged or unnecessary files and may require backing up usable content and formatting the player (Sony help).

Troubleshooting by symptom
The player charges but is not recognized
- Try a known-good data cable; some cables provide power only.
- Connect directly to the computer, not through a hub or adapter.
- Try another USB port and unlock the player.
- Select File Transfer, MTP, or storage mode.
- Restart the player and computer, then test another computer if available.
- Check the exact model’s support page before considering a reset or format.
Files copied but do not appear
- Confirm they are in the required music folder and on the intended internal storage or SD card.
- Test one standard, non-DRM MP3 with a short filename.
- Safely eject and restart the player.
- Use a Refresh, Rescan, or Update Library command if present.
- Check format, bitrate, folder limits, and whether the model requires sync software.
Songs appear but will not play
Check unsupported extensions, bitrate or sample-rate limits, malformed files, and DRM. A successful copy proves only that the computer wrote bytes to storage; it does not prove playback compatibility.
Transfer stops or says storage is full
- Check free space on both internal storage and the microSD card.
- Copy a small batch first and keep the computer awake.
- Replace the cable and avoid hubs.
- Identify whether one damaged source file triggers the failure.
- Back up the player before any format operation.
Sony lists insufficient player or card space among causes of failed transfers (Sony support).
The computer asks to format the player
Cancel the prompt. Try another cable, port, and computer; check for a backup; and read the model-specific recovery instructions. Formatting is destructive and can erase the folder structure required for playback, so treat it as a last resort.
Playlists do not transfer
Copying an album folder usually copies audio files, not a player-native playlist. Use the model’s supported sync application and confirm its playlist format and database requirements.

Frequently asked questions
Can I transfer music from Spotify or Apple Music?
Usually not as ordinary files. Subscription downloads are generally restricted to the service’s app and account. You need a legitimately obtained, transferable file in a format the player supports.
Do I need iTunes?
Only for certain Apple-device and operating-system combinations. Generic USB players normally use File Explorer or Finder, while current Windows Apple workflows may use Apple Devices.
Can I use a phone instead of a computer?
Sometimes, if the phone supports USB host or file-management features and the player accepts the connection; model-specific permissions, adapters, and power limits make this less predictable than a computer.
Why does the player show “unknown artist”?
The audio file’s embedded metadata is missing or incorrect. Edit the tags on the computer, then copy the corrected file and rescan the player.

Can I copy music from one MP3 player to another?
Copy the files to a computer first, then transfer them to the second player. Direct player-to-player copying requires both devices to support USB host/file-management functions.
Do I need to convert songs to MP3?
No. Convert only when the player does not support the original format or its technical limits. Conversion cannot remove DRM legally or reliably.
How do I transfer music to an iPod classic?
Use the iPod’s supported iTunes workflow on the relevant Windows or older-macOS setup, select music to sync, and review the selection before applying it. Do not treat the iPod classic as a generic Music-folder drive.
