Hotstar downloads are primarily an official mobile-app feature. On Android phones and tablets, iPhones, and iPads, eligible titles may show an in-app Download button. On a Windows PC or Mac, the official website is generally intended for streaming in a supported browser, not for saving Hotstar videos as MP4 or MKV files.
In India, the service is now branded JioHotstar, although older search results may still call it Hotstar or Disney+ Hotstar. The exact catalog, app name, download eligibility, and terms depend on your country, plan, title, device, and app version.
Before you start: Hotstar downloads are temporary offline viewing
The official Download feature creates an app-managed offline copy. It is not a normal video file that you can browse in File Explorer, transfer to a USB drive, open in VLC, or move to another device.
JioHotstar’s India terms state that not every title is downloadable and that downloadable content is temporary. They also prohibit attempts to create a permanent copy or use the content outside the permitted service experience. If you are outside India, confirm which Hotstar-branded service operates in your country and install its official app. India’s JioHotstar policy should not automatically be treated as the current policy for every regional Hotstar or Disney+ service.
Download Hotstar videos on Android
- Install or update the official app. Use the authorized Google Play listing for JioHotstar or the official Hotstar app available in your region. The India listing identifies JIOSTAR INDIA PRIVATE LIMITED as the developer. [c002]
- Sign in. Use the account that has access to the movie, episode, or other title.
- Open the title page. Browse to the movie, series episode, or other content you want to watch offline.
- Look for Download. If the title and account are eligible, tap the in-app Download control. Select the quality or download setting offered by the app, if the option appears.
- Wait for the download to finish. A stable Wi-Fi connection is preferable, particularly for high-quality video.
- Watch from Downloads. Open the app’s Downloads area and start the saved title from there when you are offline.
The downloaded item remains inside the official app. You should not expect to find a playable MP4 or MKV in your Android storage, and changing the file extension or copying app data will not turn it into an unrestricted video.
Android compatibility
The current India compatibility terms list Android 6.0 or later among supported systems, while also warning that supported systems may change. Compatibility for streaming does not guarantee that every title or device supports offline downloads. [c001]
Download Hotstar videos on iPhone or iPad
- Install or update the official app. On iPhone or iPad, use the official JioHotstar listing in Apple’s App Store for the relevant region. The listing identifies the official India app and its developer, JIOSTAR INDIA PRIVATE LIMITED. [c003]
- Sign in to your account. Make sure the account has permission to watch the title.
- Open the movie or episode. The Download control appears only when that particular title and account are eligible.
- Tap Download. Choose any quality or download setting presented by the app.
- Open Downloads to watch offline. Play the saved content from the app’s Downloads section rather than looking for a video in the iOS or iPadOS Files app.
The service terms describe downloads as temporary offline viewing, not permanent ownership of a video file. A saved title can later become unavailable if its license, account authorization, or other service conditions change. [c005]

iPhone and iPad compatibility
The India terms list iOS 12 or later and iPadOS 12 or later among compatible mobile systems. Apple’s current App Store listing separately shows the compatibility requirements for the version available in your region. Can you download Hotstar videos on a Windows PC or Mac?
Not through a generally supported official desktop-browser download workflow. The current India compatibility information describes streaming through supported desktop and laptop browsers, including Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari, but does not document a PC or Mac method for saving videos for offline playback. On a computer, the supported approach is to open the official Hotstar or JioHotstar website in a compatible browser and stream the title while connected to the internet. A website shortcut or progressive web app may make the site easier to open, but it does not convert the browser experience into an authorized offline-video downloader.

- Screen-recording a movie or episode
- Installing a browser extension marketed as a Hotstar downloader
- Using a modified APK or unofficial desktop application
- Using a DRM-removal or stream-capture utility
These methods can violate the service’s terms and may expose your account or computer to malware, credential theft, deceptive advertisements, or unstable software. The older United States Hotstar terms also expressly addressed stream capture, DRM circumvention, and bypassing access controls, but that older document is not a substitute for the current India JioHotstar terms. Why is the Download button missing?
A missing Download button does not necessarily mean that the app is broken. The most common explanation is that the particular title is not licensed for offline use. Other possible causes include your region, subscription or account permissions, device support, an outdated app, insufficient storage, or a change in the title’s availability.
JioHotstar’s terms make clear that not all content is downloadable and that availability can depend on geography, device, and time. [c005]
Use this troubleshooting checklist
- Test another title. If another movie or episode has a Download button, the original title is probably restricted rather than your device being defective.
- Update the official app. Install the latest version available through Google Play or the App Store.
- Check free storage. Remove unnecessary files or apps if the download stops immediately or refuses to begin.
- Try reliable Wi-Fi. A weak or changing connection can interrupt a large download.
- Confirm that you are signed in correctly. Verify that the account currently logged into the app is the one with access to the title.
- Restart the app and device. This can clear a temporary download or authorization error, though it cannot make an ineligible title downloadable.
- Reconnect periodically. Offline playback may require the app to refresh account authorization and confirm that the title is still available. Do not assume that a download remains playable indefinitely.
- Use official support. If eligible titles still fail to download after the checks above, use the app or service’s official Help or support route.
These steps can resolve connection, storage, or app problems, but they cannot override licensing restrictions or add offline support to a title that does not offer it.

What happens to an offline download?
- It stays in the official app. It is not a freely transferable video file.
- It may be temporary. The service can require renewed authorization or remove access when content availability changes.
- It may be title-specific. One episode or movie can support downloads while another does not.
- Quality and storage use vary. Higher quality generally requires more device storage, so use the setting offered by the app and check available space before downloading.
- It may depend on the account and region. Changing accounts, traveling, or using a different regional service can affect whether the saved title plays.
Because the relevant terms and licensing arrangements can change, there is no single universal expiration period that should be promised for every Hotstar download. The app’s current information for your title and region takes precedence.
Can a screen recorder or downloader save Hotstar permanently?
That is not an appropriate workaround to recommend. The India terms prohibit unauthorized copying, reproduction, distribution, and attempts to create a permanent copy of downloadable content. The older United States terms likewise describe restrictions on capturing streams and bypassing DRM. [c004][c005]
Third-party “Hotstar downloader” websites, extensions, modified apps, and DRM-removal tools are also risky from a security perspective. They may request your login credentials, bundle unwanted software, display deceptive download buttons, or produce files that fail after an update. Use the official in-app Download feature where it is offered, and otherwise stream through the supported service.

In short, download before losing connectivity only when the official mobile app displays the Download control. If it does not appear, the title, plan, region, device, or service rules may not permit offline viewing.
