How to Display Tamil Subtitles over Pre-Recorded Videos in an OBS YouTube Stream

For visible Tamil subtitles in an OBS YouTube stream, render them into the video or test a compatible embedded track in VLC Video. YouTube Studio SRT captions are a separate path.

For Tamil subtitles that every viewer can see in an OBS YouTube stream, render the subtitles into a copy of the video before adding it to OBS. If the video has an embedded Tamil subtitle track, OBS’s VLC Video source may also display it; enable subtitles, select the track, and test the actual file. An adjacent .srt file is not documented as a selectable option in OBS Media Source, and uploading an SRT to YouTube Studio does not establish that captions will appear in the live OBS picture.

Choose how the subtitles should appear

Approach Part of the OBS stream image? Viewer can toggle text? Best fit
Render (burn) subtitles into the video before OBS Yes No Predictable, visible text for every viewer
Use VLC Video with an embedded subtitle track Intended to show the selected track; verify the actual file No separate viewer toggle for the OBS composite A video with a compatible embedded track
Upload subtitle file in YouTube Studio Not established as part of the OBS live output Yes, as YouTube captions Selectable captions on a regular YouTube video

Burning subtitles into the picture is the most dependable choice when the requirement is that Tamil text be visible in the live program itself. The trade-off is that viewers cannot switch that text off. YouTube Studio captions serve a different purpose: they are associated with a YouTube video and can be selected by viewers.

Option 1: render Tamil subtitles into the video

  1. Prepare the subtitle text and timing. Use a subtitle file or your editing software’s subtitle tools. Check that the Tamil wording, timing, and line breaks match the spoken content.
  2. Open the video and subtitles in a video editor. Use the editor’s subtitle or text feature to render the Tamil lines onto the picture. Exact controls depend on the editor; the key requirement is to export a new video with the text visibly included in its frames.
  3. Check the appearance. Preview the full video, not just one frame. Confirm that Tamil glyphs render correctly, lines remain inside safe margins, text contrasts with the footage, and subtitles appear and disappear at the intended times.
  4. Export a separate subtitled copy. Keep the original unchanged so you can correct timing, wording, or styling later. Play the exported copy in a media player to check for missing characters or unexpected line breaks.
  5. Add the copy to OBS. In the Sources panel, select + → Media Source, create or choose a source, and use Browse to select the subtitled video. Set playback and looping as needed, then confirm the text is visible in the OBS preview. OBS’s documented Media Source properties cover media playback and decoding, but do not document a selector for an external .srt sidecar file. OBS Media Sources documentation.
  6. Make a short recording before streaming. Start an OBS recording and inspect it, including a section with Tamil subtitles. This checks the output rather than only the editor preview. Correct any issues before going live.

Option 2: use an embedded subtitle track with VLC Video

This route can avoid exporting a burned-in copy, but it depends on OBS and VLC being able to read the file’s container and subtitle track, and on Tamil characters rendering correctly on your system.

  1. Install VLC and check its architecture. OBS’s guide says VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source and specifies that 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
  2. Add the source. In OBS, select + in Sources and choose VLC Video. Add the local video file (or a playlist if you need one).
  3. Enable the subtitle track. In the source properties, turn on Subtitles Enabled and choose the intended Subtitle Track.
  4. Verify the result in OBS. Confirm that the right Tamil track appears, characters are legible, and timing is correct. Record a short sample and review it before broadcasting. Source documentation does not guarantee compatibility with every container, subtitle codec, or Tamil glyph setup. See OBS Media Sources documentation.

If the track does not appear or Tamil text is missing or garbled, use a rendered copy instead. That moves subtitle display out of the live source’s track-reading path.

Why an SRT upload is different from an OBS overlay

YouTube Studio supports adding subtitles through an uploaded file, auto-sync, or manual entry. Its basic supported formats include SubRip (.srt), using plain UTF-8 text. An SRT contains subtitle text and timing. Upload it from the video’s Subtitles area in YouTube Studio to create selectable captions associated with that YouTube video; this is not evidence that the captions will be composited into an OBS live stream’s picture. See YouTube: Add subtitles and captions and YouTube: Supported subtitle and closed caption files.

For an OBS live program, use burned-in text or a compatible embedded track when viewers must see subtitles in the image. YouTube documents a separate live-caption workflow: captions must be embedded in the video as 608/708 or sent using supported caption software over HTTP. Ordinary subtitle-file upload is not that workflow. See YouTube: Use automatic captioning and YouTube: Set up live captions.

Can YouTube generate Tamil captions automatically?

YouTube lists Tamil among the languages for automatic captions on long-form videos, but says live automatic captions are English-only. Do not rely on live auto-captions to provide Tamil text during the stream. YouTube also cautions that generated captions can be inaccurate because of pronunciation, accent, dialect, or background noise; review generated long-form captions before relying on them. See YouTube’s automatic-caption information.

Check the stream before you go live

  • Text is missing in the OBS preview: If using Media Source, confirm you selected the rendered copy rather than the original. If using VLC Video, enable subtitles and select the intended track.
  • An adjacent .srt file has no effect: Media Source’s documented properties do not include an external subtitle-file selector. Render the subtitles into a copy, or use VLC Video with a compatible embedded track.
  • VLC Video is unavailable or cannot load correctly: Confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS; the OBS guide specifically calls for 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
  • Tamil characters look wrong: Check the exported video or OBS recording on the system that will stream. Glyph fallback depends on the installed software and environment; no single rendering outcome is guaranteed by the source documentation. If the embedded track fails, render the text and inspect the exported copy.
  • Text is hard to read or clipped: Adjust subtitle placement, line breaks, contrast, and safe margins in the editor, export again, and review the new recording.
  • YouTube captions do not appear in the stream image: Studio subtitle uploads create YouTube captions, not a guaranteed overlay in OBS output. Use rendered subtitles or the documented live-caption workflow instead.
