YouTube permits up to 10 active streams per channel and up to 3 active streams per stream key; both limits apply. You also need the rights to livestream every track, and some rights owners require your channel to be allowlisted through Content ID.
Decide how the genre feeds will run
YouTube treats a live broadcast and the transmitted stream as separate resources. A broadcast represents the event viewers find and watch; a stream carries the encoder settings and incoming video or audio. You can reuse one stream configuration for recurring broadcasts with the same settings, or create a separate stream configuration for each broadcast. Google’s Live Streaming API documentation describes both approaches.
For independent genre feeds that need to run at the same time, plan a separate broadcast and stream configuration for each feed. Reusing a configuration can suit recurring broadcasts with shared settings, but it does not remove YouTube’s active-stream limits or make simultaneous programming unlimited.
| Approach | When it fits | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Reuse a stream configuration | Recurring broadcasts share encoder settings. | Suitable when the broadcasts do not need independent simultaneous stream programming. Check the active-stream limits before scheduling concurrent broadcasts. |
| Create a distinct stream configuration per broadcast | Feeds need independent programming or different encoder settings, especially when they run simultaneously. | Each feed needs its own configuration and a clear broadcast identity. The channel and stream-key limits still apply. |
Check eligibility and concurrent-stream limits
Before building the feeds, verify the channel and decide how many will be live at once. YouTube Help says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s music-channel guidance advises enabling first-time live streaming at least 24 hours before the planned stream.

- YouTube documents a maximum of 10 active streams per channel.
- YouTube documents a maximum of 3 active streams per stream key.
- Both limits apply. Check the current limits and active-stream status in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room before planning a schedule around simultaneous feeds.
See YouTube Help’s overview of live streaming for eligibility and setup guidance.
Create a broadcast for each genre
- Choose the schedule. List each genre feed, when it should run, and whether any broadcasts overlap. This determines how many active stream configurations you need at once.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Schedule or create a broadcast for each genre. Follow the current on-screen broadcast workflow; labels can change as YouTube updates Studio.
- Give every broadcast a distinct identity. Use a genre-specific title, description, thumbnail, and schedule. Make the genre and the kind of listening experience clear so viewers can tell feeds apart.
- Pair each broadcast with the appropriate stream configuration. Reuse a stream configuration for recurring broadcasts with shared settings, or configure a distinct stream for a feed that needs independent simultaneous programming or different encoder settings.
- Configure the encoder. Use the settings that match the selected stream configuration and the audio-led format. YouTube’s official guidance supports encoder-based streaming, but does not prescribe a particular paid encoder, computer, camera, audio interface, capture card, or storage device as mandatory for a radio feed.
- Preview and test each feed. Use YouTube’s preview and control workflow before promotion. Confirm the correct genre, audio, broadcast details, and stream are paired.
- Publish a repeatable schedule. Keep the feed’s title, description, and actual programming aligned, and use a schedule viewers can recognize.
Clear music rights before going live
Use only music for which you have permission for this specific use: continuous or recurring livestreaming on YouTube. A subscription that allows personal listening does not, by itself, establish permission to rebroadcast tracks live. Check the license scope with the rights owner, label, or distributor, and ask whether your channel must be added to a Content ID allowlist.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. YouTube Help warns: “If your channel isn’t added to their allowlist, your live stream can be interrupted even if you’ve licensed the third-party content.” YouTube for Artists likewise advises coordinating with a label or distributor when using copyright-protected music during a livestream. Read YouTube Help’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams and YouTube for Artists before launch.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
- You cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification and whether a live-streaming restriction was applied in the previous 90 days. If this is the channel’s first live stream, allow at least 24 hours after enabling live access before the planned start.
- A simultaneous feed will not start: Count the channel’s active streams and the streams using the relevant stream key. YouTube’s documented ceilings are 10 active streams per channel and 3 per stream key; reduce overlap or revise the stream-key configuration if a limit is reached.
- The wrong genre or broadcast appears: Check that the encoder is connected to the stream configuration paired with the intended broadcast, and verify the broadcast’s title, description, and schedule in Live Control Room.
- A licensed stream is interrupted: Ask the rights owner or distributor to confirm that the license covers YouTube livestreaming and whether the channel is on the Content ID allowlist. A license without allowlisting may not prevent interruption.
- Viewers cannot distinguish feeds: Make titles, descriptions, thumbnails, and schedules genre-specific, and ensure the actual music matches the feed’s stated identity.
