You can stream a science podcast archive on YouTube by sending a feed from an encoder connected to YouTube Live Control Room. If you need the broadcasts preserved as YouTube archives, plan shorter sessions: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep a local recording backup and clear rights for every episode and embedded third-party element before going live.
What “continuous” means for a podcast archive
A continuous broadcast plays prerecorded episodes as a live feed rather than transmitting a presenter or camera in real time. To do that, an encoder must send the program feed to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. YouTube supports software and hardware encoders, but its published guidance does not establish a particular encoder or playlist tool that will loop an archive unattended or restart seamlessly after an interruption.
There is an important distinction between keeping a broadcast live and keeping a reliable YouTube archive. A single stream lasting more than 12 hours may remain live, but YouTube warns it may not be captured at all. For archive preservation, schedule a sequence of sessions each shorter than 12 hours and retain local recordings. YouTube does not document a guaranteed seamless transition between sessions.
Check eligibility and clear the archive before streaming
Confirm the channel can go live
YouTube’s current getting-started guidance says the channel must be verified, must have had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days, and the user must be at least 16. First-time livestream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the planned start. See YouTube’s live-streaming getting-started guidance and encoder setup instructions.

Audit rights episode by episode
You are responsible for having the rights needed to use content in both the live broadcast and its archive, including applicable music rights. Review each episode for theme music, clips, archival audio, guest contributions, readings, and other third-party material. Keep agreements and clearances accessible; permission to publish a podcast episode does not necessarily establish permission to rebroadcast it as a YouTube livestream or retain a livestream archive. YouTube’s Terms of Service place responsibility for necessary rights on the content provider.
Set up and test the broadcast
- Prepare the program feed. Organize the episodes into a playback sequence and prepare a readable slate or visual identity that tells viewers what is currently playing. A static or simple visual can suit an audio-led science show; it is editorial guidance, not a YouTube requirement.
- Choose an encoder. Use software or hardware capable of sending a feed to YouTube. Before relying on it unattended, verify with its maker that it supports playlists and looping, automatic restart and recovery, unattended operation on your chosen device, local recording, secure stream-key handling, and your operating system. The YouTube documentation does not validate any particular encoder’s continuous-playback features.
- Create or schedule the live event. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the stream and retrieve the stream URL and stream key. YouTube documents reusing stream settings and auto-start/auto-stop controls for supported setups; confirm the controls available for your chosen configuration in YouTube’s encoder instructions.
- Connect the encoder. Enter the Live Control Room stream URL and key in the encoder’s YouTube destination settings. Treat the key as a credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Do not publish it in a video, description, screenshot, or public support request.
- Run a private or unlisted test. Start the encoder, inspect the Live Control Room preview, and check that the audio is intelligible, the visual is legible, and the episode sequence behaves as expected. Test the intended session length and local recording path before relying on them for an archive.
- Start the broadcast. Follow the Live Control Room prompts for the stream setup: start the encoder, confirm the incoming preview, then go live as directed. Monitor the session rather than assuming a scheduled start means the feed is arriving correctly.
- End and verify each session. Keep sessions under 12 hours if YouTube archive capture matters. Make a local recording as a separate backup, then check that the YouTube archive exists and review it for Content ID claims after the broadcast.
Keep a continuous schedule without risking the archive
YouTube’s help guidance states: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” Its archive guidance also warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all and recommends keeping a local recording backup. Treat the 12-hour point as a platform limit to plan around, not a guarantee that every shorter stream will be available regardless of other issues. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

For a long-running channel, the conservative approach is a scheduled sequence of shorter streams, each with its own archive check and local recording. Build in time to close one session and start the next, because YouTube’s published setup guidance does not promise a seamless handoff or automatic restart between sessions. A local external drive can hold backup recordings; YouTube does not endorse a particular model or capacity.
Copyright, Content ID, and monetization are separate checks
Live copyright checks can interrupt a stream
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn you; continued use may result in a temporary interruption or termination. Even when you have a licence, the rights holder may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID to avoid interruption. Archived live streams may also receive Content ID claims after the stream ends. Read YouTube’s live-streaming copyright guidance.

Rights do not guarantee monetization eligibility
Copyright permission and YouTube Partner Program eligibility are different questions. YouTube’s monetization policy expects original, authentic content and says repetitive or mass-produced content may be ineligible. A properly licensed archive loop is not automatically eligible for monetization: YouTube assesses the channel and content under its policy. YouTube clarified its wording about repetitive or mass-produced content on July 15, 2025; check the current channel monetization policies and your channel’s broader content before making plans around revenue.

If you use your own encoder, compare candidates on playlist and looping support, unattended operation, recovery after an interruption, local recording, stream-key security, operating-system support, and total cost. Confirm those capabilities with the encoder maker. The platform guidance does not establish which specific encoder can run an archive continuously without intervention.

Troubleshooting common problems
- Live streaming is not enabled: Complete channel verification and activation, then allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation. Check for a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days and confirm the user meets YouTube’s minimum age requirement.
- The encoder does not connect: Recheck that the stream URL and key were copied from the intended Live Control Room stream and entered in the correct encoder fields. Keep the key private; if it may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube’s stream settings and update the encoder.
- The stream is live, but the archive is missing: Check the broadcast duration first. YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. For future sessions, stay below that threshold and make a local recording backup.
- The feed is interrupted by a copyright notice: Identify the matched material, check that your licence covers livestreaming and archiving, and contact the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting if you are licensed. Remove or replace material you cannot clear.
- The next episode does not play or the stream stops: Check the encoder’s playlist, loop, unattended-operation, and recovery settings with its maker. YouTube’s documentation does not guarantee automatic playlist playback or seamless restart, so monitor transitions and maintain a local backup plan.
