How to Create a 24/7 YouTube Radio Stream from a MusicBee Playlist

Use MusicBee for your playlist, OBS to loop it and encode the stream, and YouTube Live to broadcast. Check playlist compatibility and music rights before going 24/7.

You can use MusicBee to organize and play the tracks, OBS Studio to turn the playlist into a video stream, and YouTube Live to broadcast it. The chain is MusicBee playlist → OBS media source and encoder → YouTube. The important qualification: the official documentation confirms that OBS can loop a playlist, but does not establish that a MusicBee playlist file can be loaded directly. Check the playlist format and test it in OBS before relying on it for a continuous broadcast.

What you need

  • A Windows computer with MusicBee and the audio files used by the playlist available locally. MusicBee is a music manager and player; it is not the YouTube encoder. Its official site lists playlist syncing among its capabilities: MusicBee.
  • OBS Studio, which YouTube lists as an encoder option. OBS’s VLC Video source can play a media playlist and loop it. You also need VLC installed; if you use 64-bit OBS, OBS documentation specifies 64-bit VLC. See OBS media sources.
  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, plus its stream URL and stream key. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder guide.
  • Music you have the rights to broadcast live. Having tracks in a personal library or access through a consumer streaming subscription does not by itself establish live-broadcast permission.

Prepare and verify the MusicBee playlist

  1. In MusicBee, assemble the tracks in the order you want and check that each file is available on the computer that will run OBS. If files are moved or stored on a drive that may disconnect, the playlist may no longer be able to find them.
  2. Prepare the playlist for OBS by checking MusicBee’s current save or export options and the format they produce. The official MusicBee information reviewed here does not specify an export menu, a supported playlist format for OBS, or direct compatibility with OBS/VLC. Do not assume the MusicBee playlist file will work as-is.
  3. Test the resulting playlist in OBS’s VLC Video source before planning a long broadcast. Confirm that the tracks load and play in the intended order. If OBS cannot read the playlist, use a playlist format it accepts or another supported way of supplying the media files; the reviewed documentation does not establish a specific MusicBee export procedure.

Set up OBS to play and loop the playlist

  1. Install OBS Studio and VLC. Match VLC’s architecture to OBS; for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
  2. In OBS, create a scene for the broadcast. Add a VLC Video source and load the tested playlist or media files. The VLC Video source supports playlists and looping.
  3. Enable Loop Playlist in the source settings. OBS documents this setting as on by default; Shuffle is off by default. Check both rather than relying on defaults, especially if track order matters.
  4. Add a visual element to the scene, such as an image you have permission to use. Check that the scene remains visually appropriate between tracks and during transitions. This is a practical test recommendation, not a claim that a particular layout is required by YouTube.
  5. Play through several transitions and check the audio level, source playback, and visual continuity. Leave OBS running long enough to confirm that looping behaves as intended before you promote a continuous stream.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming if the channel has not used it before. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so complete this step in advance.
  2. Create a live stream in YouTube Studio and obtain the YouTube server URL and stream key. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or include it in screenshots.
  3. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream URL and key if using the custom server/key setup. YouTube’s encoder guide explains that the encoder must send both the server URL and stream key.
  4. Start streaming from OBS and check the stream preview and status in YouTube Studio. Follow YouTube Studio’s available flow to make the broadcast public or otherwise set its visibility. Verify that the correct scene and audio are reaching the preview before directing viewers to it.
  5. Test a deliberate interruption and recovery plan before depending on the stream. Check what happens if OBS closes, the computer restarts, or the internet connection drops. A local OBS setup depends on the computer and connection staying available; this is a test to perform, not a guarantee of automatic recovery.

Rights and YouTube live-stream interruptions

YouTube says: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” Identified third-party content can produce a warning placeholder, interruption, or termination; a strike can also terminate a stream. Read YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

If you have licensed third-party music, YouTube says the rights owner must add your channel to the Content ID allowlist to avoid interruption on that basis. This applies even if you restrict the stream to territories where you hold rights. Confirm that your permission covers continuous live broadcasting and that any required allowlisting is in place before going live.

Plan for interruptions, power, and the archive

A local MusicBee-and-OBS setup requires the playback and encoding computer, power, and network connection to remain available. Decide who will monitor the channel and how you will respond if OBS, the PC, or the connection stops. Run an extended test and check the live preview rather than assuming that a playlist loop alone makes the full system unattended.

YouTube’s archive guidance says a stream shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream over 12 hours may not be captured at all; YouTube also recommends a local recording backup. A single continuous 24/7 event is therefore not a dependable way to create a complete YouTube VOD. If you need an archive, plan a local recording and/or separate shorter broadcasts, and check the current options in YouTube Studio. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a YouTube stream of uploaded recordings without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo is a cloud option. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube. The workflow is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It does not import or run a MusicBee playlist directly, so prepare the video files you want it to play.
