To keep a 24/7 kids’ stream in a predictable episode order, use OBS’s VLC Video source for the multi-file playlist, turn Shuffle Playlist off, and turn Loop Playlist on only if you want the sequence to restart after its final episode. Looping repeats the list; it does not prevent repeats between cycles. Audit the playlist itself and check YouTube’s audience, rights, and livestream requirements before going live.
Set up an ordered playlist in OBS
For several episode files, OBS’s VLC Video source is the playlist-capable option documented by the OBS Project. VLC must be installed for the source to appear. The OBS Media Sources documentation is dated January 11, 2022; labels or interface details may differ in your installed version, so verify the controls in the application.
- Install VLC, then open OBS and add a VLC Video source to the scene that will carry the stream.
- Add the episode files to the source’s playlist in the order you want them to play.
- Turn Shuffle Playlist off for a predictable sequence. With shuffle enabled, the source randomizes the list rather than following its displayed order.
- Turn Loop Playlist on if the stream should continue after the final file. OBS describes this control as specifying whether the source should restart when it has run out of media files.
- Check both settings directly before streaming rather than relying on their documented defaults, which are loop on and shuffle off.
What looping can—and cannot—prevent
With looping on, playback returns to the first item after the last item. That makes the stream continuous, but it necessarily means episodes recur on later passes through the list. Shuffle changes the order; it does not remove items or prevent recurrence.
Reduce accidental repeats within a cycle
- Review the configured list and remove duplicate file entries.
- Confirm that every episode intended to play once appears only once in that cycle.
- Check the last-to-first transition. A cycle ending with one episode and immediately restarting with that same episode can feel like an adjacent repeat even when the list contains no duplicate entry.
When an episode must not recur
If an episode should not play again during the stream, a looping playlist cannot meet that requirement indefinitely: once the list ends, looping starts it again. Use a sufficiently long sequence for the intended run or stop and update the playlist before it cycles. Turning looping off prevents a restart, but the source will run out of files at the end.

Choose the OBS source that matches the job

For an episode rotation, use VLC Video rather than treating each episode as a separate single-file Media Source. The table reflects the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation; check your installed version’s available options.
Check YouTube’s kids’ content and livestream rules
Set the audience accurately
YouTube requires creators to say whether their videos are made for kids, including livestreams, and advises creators not to rely on automated systems to make that determination. Set the audience in YouTube Studio according to the content and review it as part of the stream checklist. See YouTube’s guidance on determining whether content is made for kids.

Plan around made-for-kids feature limits
YouTube lists restrictions for made-for-kids content that affect features including live chat, comments, notifications, personalized ads, and saving to playlists. Its guidance also says a made-for-kids video or channel cannot be added to a playlist from a homepage, although content can still be added from search results. Do not make the stream’s operating plan depend on features that may be unavailable. Confirm rights and policy compliance
YouTube says livestreams must comply with its Community Guidelines, and its livestream terms require the provider to have the necessary rights for livestream content, including applicable music rights. Confirm rights for every episode and any included music before scheduling. The playlist’s presentation must also accurately represent its contents and comply with YouTube’s playlist policies. Read the YouTube Community Guidelines, YouTube Terms of Service, and YouTube’s playlist policy guidance.

Check channel livestream eligibility
YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have had livestream restrictions in the prior 90 days to enable livestreaming. YouTube describes several ways to go live, including an encoder; it does not require one particular method for this playlist workflow. Check YouTube’s current livestreaming setup guidance for eligibility and setup details.
Do not treat repeated playback as a monetization shortcut
On July 10, 2025, TeamYouTube said YouTube clarified its repetitious-content monetization guidance to cover mass-produced or repetitive content and renamed the policy “inauthentic content.” The clarification applies regardless of how content was made. A livestream wrapper does not itself establish monetization eligibility; YouTube reviews channels and content under its applicable policies. See the TeamYouTube clarification.

Troubleshoot repeats and playlist behavior
The order changes unexpectedly
Check that Shuffle Playlist is off on the VLC Video source actually in use. If several scenes or sources are involved, verify the active source rather than a similarly named one.
The playlist stops at the end
Check Loop Playlist. If it is off, the source does not restart when it runs out of files. Turn it on for continuous cycling, or leave it off if playback should end after one pass.

An episode plays twice before the list ends
Inspect the configured playlist for duplicate entries and verify that the file names correspond to the intended episodes. Also check whether the repeated item is the final file followed by the first file at a loop boundary.
The VLC Video source is missing
Install VLC and reopen or check OBS’s source menu. The OBS documentation notes that VLC must be installed for this source to be available.
A YouTube feature is unavailable
Review the stream’s made-for-kids audience setting and the feature limits YouTube applies to that content. Do not assume chat, comments, notifications, or playlist-saving options will be available.
