For a stereo internet-radio stream sent to YouTube Live over RTMP or RTMPS, use AAC audio at 44.1 kHz and set the audio bitrate to 128 kbps. YouTube also lists MP3 as a supported stereo live-audio codec, but AAC is the straightforward default. If the program is genuinely 5.1 surround, YouTube’s live guidance instead specifies AAC at 48 kHz and 384 kbps.

Recommended YouTube Live audio settings for internet radio

These are YouTube’s recommended encoder settings for live streams using RTMP/RTMPS, not rules specific to radio, music, or speech. Choose the row that matches the actual channel layout.

Use case Audio codec Sample rate Audio bitrate
Stereo live stream over RTMP/RTMPS AAC or MP3 44.1 kHz 128 kbps recommended
5.1 live stream over RTMP/RTMPS AAC 48 kHz 384 kbps recommended

These values are from YouTube Help’s current live encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. YouTube describes them as recommendations, not guarantees of a particular sound quality.

How to choose the codec and sample rate

For ordinary two-channel radio, choose AAC at 44.1 kHz

For a stereo internet-radio program, configure AAC and 44.1 kHz in the live encoder. YouTube also supports MP3 for stereo live audio, but its guidance does not claim that AAC sounds better. AAC is a practical default because it is explicitly supported for stereo and is required for the documented 5.1 RTMP/RTMPS configuration.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use 5.1 settings only for an actual 5.1 program

If the broadcast is multichannel 5.1, use AAC at 48 kHz and 384 kbps as recommended by YouTube. Do not select 5.1 settings for a two-channel radio program; channel layout, codec, and sample rate should describe the audio you are actually sending.

Codec, sample rate, and bitrate are different settings

  • Codec: AAC or MP3 identifies how the audio is encoded.
  • Sample rate: 44.1 kHz for the documented stereo live setup, or 48 kHz for 5.1.
  • Bitrate: YouTube recommends 128 kbps for stereo live audio and 384 kbps for 5.1 live audio.

Do not assume a higher sample rate or bitrate will improve the listener’s result: YouTube’s documentation supplies configuration recommendations, not comparative listening tests.

Do not confuse live-stream settings with upload settings

A prerecorded file uploaded to YouTube follows a separate encoding workflow. YouTube’s upload guidance lists AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio and recommends a 48 kHz sample rate; it recommends 384 kbps for stereo upload audio. Those upload figures do not replace the 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps live recommendations for stereo RTMP/RTMPS ingest.

See YouTube Help’s YouTube recommended upload encoding settings. Choose settings for the workflow you are using: a live encoder, an uploaded video, or another ingest arrangement. The cited live guidance does not establish a best rate for every protocol or special configuration, including every HLS setup.

Test the complete broadcast before going live

  1. Set the encoder to match your program. For stereo RTMP/RTMPS, choose AAC at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps; for genuine 5.1, choose AAC at 48 kHz and 384 kbps.
  2. Run an upload-speed test. YouTube Help recommends testing your upload bitrate. Available upload capacity matters to the stream as a whole, even though the audio bitrate is only one part of the broadcast.
  3. Test with representative content. YouTube recommends a test using audio and movement similar to what you intend to stream.
  4. Review stream health during the event. Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages and address any encoder or ingest warnings rather than assuming the configured values guarantee a clean stream.

YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation also flags unsupported codecs, audio bitrate above recommendation, and inconsistent sample rates as configuration concerns. It says configured streams should use the same audio sample rate. See LiveStreams | YouTube Live Streaming API.

Common configuration problems

  • Stereo encoder set to 48 kHz: The live guidance’s stereo recommendation is 44.1 kHz. Check the encoder’s audio-device or output settings and test again.
  • 5.1 audio sent with MP3: YouTube lists 5.1 surround support only for AAC over RTMP/RTMPS. Select AAC for a 5.1 broadcast.
  • Audio bitrate exceeds the recommendation: Set stereo audio to 128 kbps or 5.1 audio to 384 kbps, then review stream health. The documented numbers are recommendations, not a guarantee that other settings will work or fail in every setup.
  • Sample rate changes between configured streams: Keep the audio sample rate consistent across the streams, as noted in YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation.
  • Upload settings applied to live ingest: The 48 kHz upload recommendation is for uploaded files. For stereo RTMP/RTMPS live audio, use the separate live recommendation.
  • Warnings persist after changing settings: Confirm that the encoder is actually outputting the chosen codec, sample rate, channel layout, and bitrate; then run another representative test and check stream-health messages.
