Test the exact loop before launch. A 24-hour broadcast is an operating goal—not a guarantee of uninterrupted service or a complete YouTube archive.
1. Prepare footage and sound you can legally stream
Original forest footage and field-recorded ambience give you the clearest path to a distinctive stream. If you use someone else’s video or audio, verify that the permission covers the specific uses you intend: live streaming on YouTube, relevant territories, monetized use if applicable, and any recording or archive left on your channel. Keep the license and permissions accessible.
Permission and Content ID allowlisting address different risks. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match may replace the stream with a placeholder image and interrupt or terminate the broadcast if the material remains. Even licensed material may trigger an interruption unless its rights owner has added your channel to the Content ID allowlist. “Royalty-free” does not mean immune from automated matching. - Check who owns every video and audio component, including music, recordings and stock footage.
- Confirm live, commercial, territory and archive/VOD permissions in the license terms.
- Ask the rights owner whether your channel needs Content ID allowlisting.
- If YouTube interrupts the stream, check the notice in YouTube Studio and address the identified rights issue. A match by itself does not settle the legal question.

2. Choose how to encode and operate the stream
YouTube accepts live video from an encoder. That can be software running on a computer or a standalone encoder device; YouTube also supports webcam and mobile workflows, but an encoder is the practical route for a prepared ambience loop. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it and schedule your setup well ahead of the planned launch. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
Use OBS on a computer
OBS Studio is a no-charge software encoder. Its published operating-system and graphics requirements are compatibility guidance, not a promise that a computer can encode a particular resolution and frame rate continuously. CPU demand depends on the encoder, output settings and scene complexity. OBS recommends opening Tools → Auto Configuration Wizard to find settings suited to your hardware; then test the actual footage and audio you plan to stream. See OBS system requirements.

For slow-moving fog and forest scenes, start with a modest resolution and frame rate, then increase quality only if the computer and connection remain stable. Test a representative section of the loop long enough to catch encoder load, dropped frames, network instability, audio gaps and visible cuts when the loop restarts. This is practical setup guidance, not a guarantee that a particular machine or internet plan will sustain 24/7 operation.
Plan for continuous operation
A local encoder depends on the computer, its power supply and your upload connection staying available. Plan how you will respond to a computer restart, network loss or power outage, and how you will restart the stream. A UPS can help with short power interruptions, but it must be sized for the actual encoder and network equipment load; no particular model or runtime is established here. Keep the stream key private.

3. Create the YouTube event and connect your encoder
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a live event. Enable live streaming early if this is your first broadcast; activation can take up to 24 hours.
- In the event’s stream settings, copy the YouTube stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s streaming settings. Do not share the key; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your event.
- Set the output resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate and audio settings in the encoder. Match these to YouTube’s ingest recommendations and your tested upload capacity.
- Start the encoder and check the preview in Live Control Room before starting or publicizing the broadcast. Confirm that the image moves as expected and that the forest ambience is audible and free of unwanted gaps or clipping.
- Check that the event is accessible from your channel or watch page, including on a phone. After going live, keep monitoring audio, video and stream health rather than assuming a successful preview guarantees a stable long session.
YouTube recommends setting up the encoder ahead of time, checking the preview and monitoring the live picture and sound. Its streaming tips also recommend keeping upload bandwidth 20% above the stream bitrate to leave headroom for network variation. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
4. Set the encoder’s video and audio values
Use YouTube’s current ingest guidance for your chosen resolution, frame rate and codec. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, with up to 60 fps. For RTMP/RTMPS ingest it recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed 4 seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.

The bitrate figures above are YouTube’s settings for the specified H.264 1080p30 ingest case, not a machine benchmark or ISP guarantee. Other resolutions, frame rates and codecs have their own values in YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions guidance. Because fog and trees may show subtle motion and detail, inspect the stream preview at your chosen settings instead of relying only on a static test image.

YouTube says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That does not establish that one 24-hour broadcast will be saved in full. If retaining a complete record matters, consider running sessions shorter than 12 hours and keeping your original footage and project files separately. YouTube’s guide does not establish that every longer stream will be archived. See YouTube’s encoder guide on archiving.

In its August 12, 2026 explanation of qualified watch hours, YouTube says archived livestreams can count toward qualified watch hours, while live streams that are not archived are excluded. This does not mean every live-view hour will qualify or that a broadcast beyond the archive window will retain all of its VOD. For exact current Partner Program eligibility thresholds, consult YouTube’s current channel monetization policies.
6. Make the stream original—and treat monetization as a separate review
YouTube’s monetization policy requires original, non-repetitious content and makes clear that reused-content review is separate from copyright enforcement, permission and fair use. Having permission to use a clip does not, by itself, establish that a channel meets monetization policy. Nor does the format alone determine the outcome: a loop or static image is not automatically accepted or rejected.
Build a clearly authored experience rather than relying on an interchangeable loop. You might use footage from locations you filmed, shape the soundscape deliberately, show meaningful changes in weather or light, and create presentation specific to the stream. These are ways to make your contribution apparent, not guaranteed acceptance criteria. Read YouTube’s channel monetization policies before relying on a livestream for monetization.
