For a low-end PC, start with OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard, then test a simple 720p30 stream using a reliable hardware encoder, H.264, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and a bitrate your upload can sustain with headroom. If the PC or connection cannot hold that profile, try 480p30 and simplify the scene. No preset guarantees 24/7 uptime: test the actual setup, and plan for power, internet, and YouTube’s limits on archives and DVR for very long streams.
Start with a light OBS profile
OBS performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity, so a computer that meets basic system requirements is not necessarily able to stream reliably. OBS describes these factors in its system requirements guidance. Treat the settings below as a starting point, then validate them with the content and schedule you intend to use.
- In OBS, open Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard and follow the prompts. Use its result as a baseline, not a guarantee.
- Open Settings → Video. Set Common FPS Values to 30. If the source is higher-resolution, lower Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1280×720 for an initial 720p trial.
- Keep the scene lean: remove unnecessary animated sources and filters, and close applications that are heavily using the GPU. OBS recommends reducing output resolution and frame rate and simplifying scenes when encoding performance is a problem; see OBS encoding performance troubleshooting.
If 720p30 is still too demanding, test 480p30. It uses less system and network capacity, but shows less detail. Whether the difference is acceptable depends on the material: text, fine details, and fast movement can become harder to see at lower resolution.
Choose an encoder and set YouTube-compatible output
Try the hardware encoder your PC already supports
Go to Settings → Output, set Output Mode to Advanced if needed, and inspect the Streaming encoder options. If a supported hardware encoder is available and stable, test it first. Hardware encoding moves some work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component. OBS lists NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel QSV, and Apple VideoToolbox, but older generations can produce lower image quality than newer ones. The encoder name alone does not establish which option will look best on your PC; compare the available choices with your real scene. Details: OBS hardware encoding.

Software x264 may be an option, but it uses CPU resources. On a constrained computer, that can leave less capacity for OBS and other work. Compare it with the hardware option on your own machine rather than assuming either is automatically superior.
Use H.264, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval
For a straightforward YouTube profile, set the encoder to H.264, rate control to CBR, and Keyframe Interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. Its current encoder settings are listed at YouTube’s live encoder settings page.

Set bitrate to match the upload connection
Measure the upload connection at the streaming location and choose a bitrate that it can sustain consistently, not just during a brief speed-test peak. YouTube’s H.264 guidance lists these values for the two profiles discussed here:
| Profile | YouTube-listed minimum bitrate | YouTube-listed recommended bitrate | Practical trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | More detail, with greater demands on the encoder and upload connection. |
| 480p30 | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps | Less detail and a lighter network target; useful to test when 720p is unstable or too demanding. |
These are YouTube’s platform figures, not a guarantee that an Indian ISP route or your particular connection can maintain them. YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. OBS’s 2024-09-30 connection troubleshooting guidance suggests about 75% of total upload speed as a bitrate starting point. Treat both as planning guidance: account for audio and any other stream traffic, then leave spare capacity for variation rather than targeting the full measured upload. If the connection fluctuates, lower the bitrate or resolution and test again.

Prefer a stable wired connection when practical
OBS recommends a wired connection for streaming because Wi-Fi can be unstable. If both your PC and router have Ethernet ports and you can route a cable safely, Ethernet is worth testing; a Cat 6 cable is one option, not a required OBS component. Compare the stability you actually observe. A wired link does not prevent ISP congestion or power interruptions. For connection-specific fixes, see OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
There is no India-wide upload or outage figure here that can tell you whether your location is suitable. Test the connection and local power at the actual streaming site, preferably around the hours you intend to stream.

Validate the stream before leaving it unattended
- Run a test stream with audio and movement similar to the real content. YouTube recommends testing under representative conditions and monitoring stream health; see YouTube streaming tips.
- Watch the stream from another device. Confirm that the picture, audio, and stream health are acceptable, and check what happens when the connection briefly drops.
- In OBS, watch for dropped frames and encoding overload. Dropped frames point to a connection that is unstable or cannot sustain the bitrate; encoding overload points to a workload the system cannot process reliably.
- For an unattended run, verify that the local archive file is growing if you are recording. YouTube’s computer streaming tips recommend keeping a local archive backup.
OBS has an automatic reconnect option in Advanced settings, but reconnecting cannot restore power or fix a sustained ISP failure. Test recovery behavior instead of assuming it will cover every interruption.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely issue | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames or an unstable stream | The connection is unstable or the bitrate is beyond what it can sustain. | Lower bitrate; test Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi; check for VPN, security software, or network-optimization interference. If it persists, contact your ISP. OBS lists these steps in its connection troubleshooting guide. |
| Encoding overload or choppy output | The encoder or scene is too demanding for the PC. | Reduce output resolution or FPS, simplify the scene and filters, close GPU-heavy applications, and test the available hardware encoder. OBS’s encoding troubleshooting guide covers these adjustments. |
| The picture looks poor at the chosen bitrate | The bitrate may be too low for the content, or the encoder may be limiting quality. | Test a higher bitrate only if the upload has stable spare capacity. Otherwise use a simpler scene or lower resolution; compare available encoders on the same content. |
| The stream stops during a power or internet interruption | OBS reconnect settings do not replace power or network availability. | Test recovery on the actual setup and decide whether your location needs backup power or another internet path. Appropriate capacity depends on the particular installation. |
Understand YouTube’s archive and DVR limits
A stream can remain live without yielding a complete saved YouTube video. YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all; its archive guidance does not promise a full recording for a continuous 24-hour session. YouTube also says DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable on very long streams, including streams longer than 12 hours. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

If a complete archive matters, make a local recording backup, check available storage, and test the extra recording load on the PC. You could also use shorter sessions if having an automatically saved YouTube archive is important; do not rely on one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast to create a complete VOD.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the low-end PC is the weak link, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for looping uploaded videos: upload a recording or create a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer, OBS, or home connection staying on. StreamNeo offers any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. For Indian creators, UPI and cards are accepted. See StreamNeo and pricing. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does OBS have to stay open for the stream to continue?
Yes. An OBS-based stream depends on the computer running OBS and its internet connection; the cloud option described above avoids leaving a home computer running.
Can YouTube save a complete recording of a 24-hour stream?
Not reliably. YouTube says streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all, so use a tested local recording backup if a complete archive is essential.
