To schedule an overnight radio show on a 24/7 YouTube channel, create a scheduled live event in YouTube Studio, then separately arrange for an encoder or playout system to send the show’s audio and video at the right time. The event creates the broadcast and watch page; it does not play or schedule the radio program for you.
What you need before scheduling
- A YouTube channel that is eligible for live streaming, with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- An audio-and-video feed for the overnight show, generated by encoder or playout software on a computer, standalone hardware encoder, or a cloud playout service.
- The event’s stream URL and stream key, which connect the feed to the scheduled broadcast.
- Permission for the music and other material in both the live show and any archive you intend to keep.
Schedule the YouTube live event
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live, then open the Manage tab.
- Select Schedule stream. Create a new event or reuse settings from a previous one.
- Enter the show title, start time, and visibility. Check the time zone and date carefully, especially for a show that crosses midnight.
- Save the event. Share its upcoming watch-page link if listeners should be able to find it in advance and opt in to notifications.
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe the scheduling workflow. The scheduled event is the broadcast listing and watch page; the encoder still has to deliver the program feed.
Choose how to play and send the overnight show
Pick the system that can reliably generate the feed and send it for the full period. YouTube supports software encoders as well as standalone hardware encoders, and its encoder directory includes cloud streaming services. The right fit depends on your station’s equipment, staffing, and need for unattended playback.

A physical encoder is not required: YouTube’s setup guidance includes software encoders as an option. Compare any setup on its ability to play the right program, sustain the feed, and recover or alert you if something stops.

Connect the feed and go live
- Open the scheduled event’s stream settings and retrieve its stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as a secret: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to the event.
- Enter the URL and key in the encoder or playout system. Set the source to the overnight program and verify its audio and video before the scheduled start.
- Start the encoder at the planned time. In YouTube’s documented scheduled workflow, wait for the incoming preview and select Go live unless auto-start is enabled for that stream.
- Confirm that the correct event is live, the visibility is right, and the audio and video are reaching the watch page as expected.
- For overnight operation, arrange monitoring or a recovery process. A scheduled event does not by itself keep the encoder running or guarantee that a feed will recover if interrupted.
YouTube’s Manage live stream settings explains stream keys, URLs, notifications, and auto-start and auto-stop settings. Those controls can affect how the stream begins and ends, so check them for the event rather than assuming that scheduling automatically starts the program.
Use a continuous channel feed and separate program events when needed
If the channel should remain on a continuous station feed while also presenting individual programs, YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation describes maintaining a 24/7 feed and creating a separate broadcast for a distinct event, such as an interview. Plan archives and rewind around long broadcasts
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a replay matters, schedule shorter broadcast segments and keep a local recording as a backup. Do not rely on one archive for a continuous 24/7 stream. Very long streams may also have limited or unavailable DVR rewind, so do not promise listeners unlimited rewind through the full broadcast. Check music and other rights before going live
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted material. If it detects such content, YouTube may show a placeholder and warn the streamer; if the content remains, the stream can be interrupted or terminated. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also result in termination.

Having a licence does not necessarily prevent interruption: YouTube says the rights owner may need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Confirm permissions for the specific tracks, recordings, compositions, territories, and intended live and archived uses. YouTube’s Copyright issues with live streams and Livestream terms and conditions describe the platform’s requirements. These points do not determine the legal requirements for a particular station or jurisdiction.
Troubleshoot common scheduling problems
- The channel cannot schedule or start a live stream: Check that the channel is eligible and live streaming has been enabled. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
- The event is scheduled, but no program appears: Scheduling creates the broadcast event, not the feed. Check that the encoder or playout system is running and using the event’s correct stream URL and key.
- The feed arrives, but the event has not gone live: In the scheduled workflow, wait for the preview and select Go live, unless auto-start is enabled. Verify the event and its start settings.
- The stream stops during the night: Check power, internet continuity, unattended playback, and any restart or monitoring arrangements. YouTube’s event schedule is not a guarantee of feed continuity.
- Music causes a warning or interruption: Review the rights for the exact material and intended uses, and ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting where applicable.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: A broadcast longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Use shorter events and keep a separate recording if the archive is important.
