For a looping YouTube stream with Hindi text visibly on screen, burn the subtitles into the video, encode it to YouTube’s recommended settings, and send it to the RTMPS address and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. FFmpeg can also work with subtitle formats such as SRT and WebVTT, but that alone does not make an SRT file selectable live captions on YouTube. For selectable captions, use a caption delivery method YouTube documents and verify it in a test stream.
Choose how viewers should see the Hindi subtitles
“Subtitles” can mean text rendered into the picture, captions viewers can turn on or off, or a separate timed subtitle track. These are different delivery paths; choose one before configuring FFmpeg.

If accessibility requires viewer-selectable Hindi captions, use YouTube’s documented caption route and check the live preview with a viewer account. YouTube’s guidance for embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 captions says that mode supports one caption track at present, although the standard supports multiple languages.
Prepare the video and Hindi text
Check the source and loop
Use a finished recording or a sequence of segments that you have permission to stream. Confirm that the intended video and audio streams are present, that the audio is continuous, and that the end-to-start transition is acceptable. FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 can loop an input, but behavior depends on the input and installed FFmpeg build; check the loop before relying on it for a continuous broadcast.

Prepare a UTF-8 subtitle file
For burned-in text, save the Hindi subtitle file in UTF-8 and check its timings against the source video. Use a system with a suitable Devanagari font and rendering stack. Inspect conjuncts, vowel signs, line breaks, and punctuation in the actual rendered frames: font availability and shaping can vary by host and FFmpeg build. Do not treat successful filter execution as proof that the Hindi text is legible.
Get the YouTube ingest address and key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream.
- Reveal or select the RTMPS ingest address. YouTube may show an ordinary RTMP address by default; use the secure RTMPS endpoint for this setup.
- Copy the stream key associated with that stream and form the output URL in the format YouTube provides. The key is a credential: keep it out of public scripts, screenshots, logs, and shared configuration.
- Store the complete output URL securely on the machine that will run FFmpeg. The example below reads it from the
YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URLenvironment variable; set that variable privately to the exact address and key from Live Control Room.
Choose an encoder configuration
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists H.264, HEVC, and AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS ingest, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. The settings below are YouTube recommendations, accessed in 2026; select values for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate.

These figures are not universal settings: use YouTube’s matrix for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually select, and recheck Live Control Room because recommendations can change. YouTube automatically creates viewing formats for live streams, but that does not remove the need for a stable ingest.
- Rate control: Set CBR at the selected bitrate. For H.264 with FFmpeg’s
libx264, matching-b:v,-minrate, and-maxrateis a common way to request a constrained constant rate; confirm the resulting encoder behavior for your build. - Keyframes: Set a two-second interval. At 30 fps, that is 60 frames; at 60 fps, it is 120 frames. Keep the interval at or below YouTube’s four-second maximum.
- Upload capacity: YouTube advises planning for the primary bitrate plus backup bitrate plus 20% headroom. If you do not have a backup encoder, still ensure the connection can sustain the primary stream with margin; do not count on the nominal line rate being continuously available.
- Codec support: The example below uses H.264 through
libx264. Check your installed build and host before choosing another encoder or codec.
Run an illustrative FFmpeg command
This example assumes one local video file named documentary.mp4 with an audio stream, and a UTF-8 SRT file named hindi.srt. It burns the subtitles into a 1080p, 30 fps H.264 output, paces the input in real time, loops it, and publishes through the RTMPS URL stored in YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL. It is a configuration pattern, not a tested command for every operating system, FFmpeg build, input, or font stack.

-f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL"Use an RTMPS URL exactly as YouTube supplies it; the FLV muxer in this command does not mean you should replace the secure endpoint with an ordinary RTMP URL. The exact command may need adjustment for the input, operating system, FFmpeg version, and available subtitle renderer. Check that your build includes the subtitle filter with ffmpeg -filters and inspect the installed build with ffmpeg -version. If a path contains spaces or special characters, FFmpeg filter syntax may require escaping beyond ordinary shell quoting.
The command’s -map options explicitly select the first video and audio streams. If the file has no audio stream, the audio map will fail; add or select an audio source rather than assuming the video-only file is suitable. If it has multiple tracks, choose the intended streams deliberately. Video options apply to the filtered video output. If you change resolution or frame rate, revisit the bitrate and keyframe values rather than reusing these 1080p30 settings unchanged.

Test before leaving the stream unattended
- Use an unlisted or otherwise non-public test stream in Live Control Room.
- Check YouTube’s preview for moving video, continuous audio, correct framing, subtitle timing, and readable Hindi glyphs.
- Watch the viewer playback as well as the encoder preview. Confirm that the final captions are visible to viewers and that audio and video stay in sync.
- Review stream-health warnings and compare them with the encoder settings and available upload capacity.
- Make a local recording if the source or a complete archive matters. Check that the recording plays before depending on it.
- Monitor the stream after launch. YouTube recommends test streams, preview checks, reliable upload capacity, and ongoing stream-health monitoring.
Keep FFmpeg and the broadcast recoverable
A running FFmpeg process is not the same as a continuously supervised service. Run it under an operating-system service manager or process supervisor that can restart it and alert you when it stops. Configure alerts and monitoring for the host, network, encoder process, and YouTube stream health; a restart alone cannot tell you whether viewers are seeing the intended output.
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer has an attempt_recovery option that can try to recover network output after failures. Its drop_pkts_on_overflow option can let encoding continue if the queue fills by dropping packets, which means gaps in the output; enable it only if you accept that loss. Protocol options such as reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, and reconnect_on_network_error apply to supported inputs. They do not automatically restart the entire YouTube publishing process.

Plan for archives and long-running events
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on that statement as a promise of a complete archive for a longer continuous session. If a complete recording matters, keep a local recording and verify it. Decide how you will handle event lifecycle and any intentional segments; there is no universal 24/7 event-segmentation setting established here.

Fix common setup problems
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Check that the output URL includes the exact RTMPS endpoint and stream key from the selected Live Control Room stream. Confirm that the key is current and has not been exposed or replaced.
- FFmpeg reports an unknown subtitle filter or cannot render the file: Check
ffmpeg -filters, confirm the build has the required subtitle rendering support, and verify the path and UTF-8 encoding. Install or select a suitable Devanagari font and test again. - Hindi characters appear as boxes, are reordered, or break incorrectly: The renderer or font stack may not support the needed glyphs or shaping. Try a suitable Devanagari font and inspect conjuncts, line breaks, and punctuation in the actual preview before production.
- The subtitles drift out of sync: Compare SRT timings with the source timeline, and verify the source loop’s start and end behavior. Re-test after any frame-rate or source edit.
- The stream stutters or health warnings appear: Check upload capacity against the selected bitrate and YouTube’s headroom advice, then inspect host load, network stability, and the encoder’s actual output. Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate only after selecting values appropriate to YouTube’s matrix.
- The stream stops when the input ends: Confirm the input can be looped by the installed FFmpeg build and that
-stream_loop -1applies to the chosen source. Use a process supervisor for process exits; input reconnect flags are not whole-process recovery. - The archive is incomplete: Streams longer than 12 hours are not covered by YouTube’s stated automatic-archive rule for streams under 12 hours. Keep and verify a local recording when a full archive is required.
