Recommended settings for a 24/7 music stream
YouTube’s live encoder guidance is general platform guidance, not a special preset for music or continuous broadcasts. For a playlist with a still image or slowly changing visual, 1080p30 is a practical starting choice; a static visual usually does not require a high frame rate. The relevant bitrate depends on resolution and codec.

If your upload connection is unstable, lower the resolution or bitrate before the broadcast rather than risking dropped frames or interruptions.
Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain
Run an upload-speed test from the same connection and location you will use for the stream. Leave capacity beyond the encoder’s bitrate: YouTube recommends 20% headroom and says the combined bitrate of primary and backup streams, plus that headroom, should fit your upload capacity. A backup feed is not free in bandwidth terms.

- At 1080p30, use the 14 Mbps H.264 recommendation only if the connection can reliably carry it with the required headroom.
- If that margin is not available, consider 720p30, for which YouTube lists 8 Mbps for H.264, or lower the bitrate to a sustainable level.
- Do not choose a codec-based bitrate figure in isolation: resolution, frame rate, codec, and connection stability all matter.
For a 24/7 stream, a bitrate that works in a short test but regularly approaches your connection’s limit is a poor trade. Consistent playback matters more than selecting a higher setting that the link cannot reliably deliver.
Set up the stream in YouTube Studio and your encoder
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream. If this is your first time streaming, activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave setup until the planned start time.
- In the stream’s setup details, obtain the stream URL and stream key, then enter them in your encoder’s YouTube destination settings. Labels vary by encoder; use its live-stream or streaming-output settings.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish or share it. If you think it has been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Set RTMPS, H.264, CBR, the chosen resolution and frame rate, a 2-second keyframe interval, and the audio settings above where those controls are available.
- Run a private or otherwise appropriate test that includes the actual playlist audio and visual. Check sound levels, transitions, image stability, and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on a long run.
- Once live, keep an eye on Live Control Room’s stream health and messages. For an unattended broadcast, plan how you will detect silent playback, a frozen visual, encoder failure, or a network outage.
Plan for long-run reliability and archives
A 24/7 broadcast raises operational issues beyond encoder settings. Keep the computer and network connection powered and stable if you are encoding locally, and decide how the encoder will be restarted if it stops. YouTube does not prescribe a special 24/7 encoder setting; these are practical precautions for an unattended run.

Do not depend on YouTube to archive a stream over 12 hours
YouTube Help says, “If your live stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” Streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but that is not a guarantee that an entire continuous broadcast will be preserved. If you need a replay, record a local archive and verify that the recording is actually being written. YouTube recommends a local recording as a backup. Storage capacity depends on recording bitrate, codec, duration, and the available machine; an external drive is an optional place to keep a large recording, not a fixed-capacity requirement.
Very long streams may not offer full DVR
YouTube DVR lets viewers pause and rewind live streams, but its capabilities may be limited or unavailable when a stream exceeds 12 hours. If dependable archives or rewind access for each program matter, consider dividing the playlist into shorter scheduled sessions rather than promising one uninterrupted 24/7 replay.

Clear music rights before you start
Having a playable playlist does not establish that you have permission to broadcast it. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; if copyrighted material is identified and remains in the broadcast, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. A strike can also end a live stream. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the provider to have the rights needed for live use, including relevant music rights.
- Check that the license explicitly covers livestreaming—not only personal listening or on-demand video.
- Confirm territory coverage and whether the grant covers the visual component and archiving or replay.
- Keep the license and permission records. Ask the rights holder whether your channel needs to be added to a Content ID allowlist.
- Do not assume a license alone prevents an interruption: YouTube says a stream can still be interrupted if the channel is not on the rights holder’s allowlist.
YouTube Creator Music is not a clearance route for a live playlist. YouTube’s usage guidance says its licensed and revenue-sharing tracks can be used in long-form videos but not livestreams. The same guidance describes availability for US creators in the YouTube Partner Program and says expansion outside the US is pending.
