In the usual scene-based setup, audio sources entering or leaving with a scene fade during that transition. A 2020 OBS forum reply describes this behavior, but not a separate audio-fade duration or a fade tail after the transition ends, so check the result in your installed OBS version.
Choose how OBS will play the clips
For deliberate control over which nature clip is active and when it changes, put clips in separate scenes or arrange sources so you can make a scene change at each desired point. Give scenes clear names, such as “Rain,” “Forest birds,” or “Stream,” to make the sequence easy to operate.
For sequential playback, OBS’s VLC Video source can use a playlist and offers loop and shuffle settings. VLC must be installed for this source type to appear in OBS. Playlist playback is a different arrangement from switching scenes: OBS’s documentation does not establish that every playlist-item change produces the same audio fade behavior as a scene transition. Verify it with a recording before relying on it.

Set up the scene transition
- Create the clip sources. In each scene, add the appropriate media source for the clip you want to play. For explicit change points, use one scene per clip or per intended combination of clips.
- Arrange and name the scenes. Keep the scene order and names clear so you can identify the next nature clip while operating OBS.
- Select the transition. In the Scene Transitions section, choose Fade. OBS includes Fade as a built-in transition, and the active transition can be changed from this section.
- Set the duration. Adjust the transition duration to suit the pacing of the footage and sound. There is no single ideal length for every clip; listen to the change rather than assuming a preset will fit.
- Switch scenes and check the audio. When an audio source is present in one scene and absent in the other, a 2020 OBS forum response says it fades during the scene transition. The response describes no independent audio timing or extra tail after that transition. If the result differs in your installed version, check that the source is arranged in the scenes as intended and test again.
OBS’s overview guide explains scene creation and transition selection. The audio detail above comes from a community-forum response, not an official guarantee for every version: “How to fade out the sound when switching the scenes?”
Know what mixer controls and filters do
The Audio Mixer controls source levels; filters process audio. Neither should be confused with the scene transition that changes from one scene to another. OBS documents filters such as Gain and Compressor in its Filters Guide and Compressor Filter guide. Compressor sidechain ducking can lower one source in response to another—for example, background audio under a microphone—but it is not the basic control for fading clip audio with a scene change.

If you need an audio envelope with timing independent from the scene transition, the cited guides do not provide a complete native step-by-step procedure for that workflow. Do not assume the standard Fade transition exposes a separate audio-duration setting.
Record a test before going live
- Make a short recording that includes at least one change between nature clips.
- Watch the Audio Mixer meters while testing for unexpected jumps or clipping.
- Listen back to confirm the outgoing and incoming sounds change as expected, and that each clip starts at the intended point.
OBS recommends recording a session and listening back before going live. Its Audio Mixer Guide is dated 2026-04-03; interface labels can vary between OBS versions.

Troubleshoot an abrupt or missing fade
- The sound cuts off or starts abruptly: Check that the audio source is actually part of the scene being entered or left. The forum-described fade applies to sources entering or leaving with a scene transition.
- The picture fades but the audio does not: Confirm you are changing scenes with Fade, rather than relying on a playlist-item change; playlist behavior is not established as equivalent. Record a short test in your installed version.
- The fade ends too soon: The described audio fade lasts through the scene transition and does not continue as a tail afterward. Adjust the scene transition duration and test again if that interval does not suit the clips.
- The sound level is wrong throughout the clip: Use the Audio Mixer to adjust source level, or consider an appropriate filter such as Gain. These change the audio signal level; they do not create an independently timed scene-change fade.
