To reduce data use for a 24/7 devotional stream, first lower the broadcaster’s video resolution and bitrate, then verify that the total audio-and-video bitrate fits the available upload speed with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. That reduces the data sent by the channel and can make the feed easier to originate. It does not set or guarantee how much mobile data each viewer uses: viewers download playback, and the delivered quality can vary.
Which data use are you trying to reduce?
There are two separate data paths:
- Broadcaster upload: the channel sends one encoded live feed to YouTube. Its bitrate determines roughly how much data the broadcaster sends over time.
- Viewer playback: each person watching downloads a stream. Playback quality and data use can vary by device, connection and available player settings.
Reducing the broadcast bitrate helps with the first path and may improve the chance of a stable stream on a modest connection. It does not guarantee a particular viewer’s hourly data use.
Choose a low-data format for devotional content
If the programme is primarily bhajans, kirtan, Gurbani or other devotional audio, test a still devotional image or a simple, low-motion visual at low resolution. This is a practical production choice, not an official YouTube low-data preset. If your video includes lyrics, schedules or other on-screen text, check that it remains legible on a phone at the quality you plan to use.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Output | Published minimum bitrate | Published recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 480p, 30fps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p, 30fps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
These are encoder reference settings, not measurements of a viewer’s data use and not a promise that every stream at that resolution consumes exactly the listed rate. The large gap between minimum and recommended values is a reason to test both stability and acceptable picture quality rather than assuming the minimum will look good or the recommended value is necessary for every programme. YouTube’s live encoder settings also list H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 as supported video codecs, CBR as the bitrate mode, and AAC or MP3 for audio. Its advanced settings specify 128 Kbps stereo audio. Check that your chosen encoder and YouTube ingest workflow support the settings you select; the cited guidance does not make a lower audio bitrate an official recommendation.
Calculate whether the broadcaster’s connection can carry the stream
YouTube’s guidance is direct: “The total bitrate that you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available. Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” Upload capacity—not the faster download speed often advertised for a connection—is the relevant measure. Other people using a shared connection can reduce the capacity left for streaming, and a connectivity disruption can break the stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

- Measure upload speed where the stream will run. Test at the actual location, preferably during the hours the devotional channel will be live. A general speed result from another place or time may not reflect available capacity during the broadcast.
- Add the audio and video bitrates. Treat their combined bitrate as the feed’s total bitrate when checking it against upload capacity.
- Leave the recommended headroom. As a practical check, the combined bitrate should use no more than about 80% of the upload capacity you can reliably sustain. This applies YouTube’s recommendation to leave 20% room; it is not a guarantee against fluctuations.
- Test under realistic conditions. Include normal household or community-centre network use, and watch YouTube’s live preview and an actual viewer playback for stalls, drops and acceptable quality.
There is no India-wide upload speed or data-plan assumption that can establish whether a particular location is suitable. Measure the connection that will carry this specific stream.
Estimate the broadcaster’s upload data
For a steady stream, a rough planning estimate is bitrate in megabits per second × 0.45 = gigabytes sent per hour, using decimal units and excluding overhead. For example, a combined 1 Mbps feed is approximately 0.45 GB per hour, or about 10.8 GB over 24 hours. Actual transfer can differ because bitrate may vary and network overhead adds data. Use this only to estimate the broadcaster’s upload, not viewers’ playback consumption.

A historical reference comes from a 2017 PhiMetrics Technologies Pvt. Ltd. submission hosted by TRAI: it estimated 250 MB per hour for non-HD video, 2 GB per hour for HD video, and 150–175 MB per hour for music or radio. These are illustrative company-submission estimates, not current measurements by TRAI, not specific to YouTube Live, and not a promise for a particular device, stream or network. Help viewers manage mobile data
Viewers can check the quality options actually available in the YouTube player on their device and choose a lower one when offered. The sources cited here do not establish a current live-stream “audio only” mode or guarantee a particular low-data control, so do not promise either to listeners. A broadcaster’s lower bitrate is not a substitute for checking playback options on the viewer’s own phone.

TRAI’s mobile-data FAQ says operators send usage information after sessions and alerts when usage reaches 50%, 90% and 100% of the plan’s data limit. Viewers can use those alerts to monitor their own plan; alert availability and delivery are governed by the operator’s service. See TRAI’s mobile-data FAQ.

A low bitrate alone does not make a 24/7 stream dependable. YouTube recommends testing the setup, previewing before going live, checking playback on mobile and continuously monitoring audio and video. If using a backup encoder, test it by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, as YouTube suggests in its streaming tips.

- Listen for silence, clipping, unexpected pauses or a mismatch between audio and the devotional visual.
- Check the stream from a phone using a mobile connection, not only from the equipment sending it.
- Plan separately for local power and network interruptions. A UPS may keep local encoder, router or audio equipment powered briefly, but it will not lower data use or fix an ISP or mobile-network outage.
- Do not treat a successful test as an uptime guarantee. YouTube’s guidance recommends testing and monitoring; it does not promise uninterrupted service.
Check mobile live eligibility if you are streaming from a phone
YouTube’s mobile-live help page lists at least 50 subscribers, channel verification and no live-stream restriction in the past 90 days as conditions for mobile live streaming. First-time mobile live activation may take up to 24 hours. These are mobile-live conditions, not a complete eligibility guide for encoder-based workflows. Check YouTube’s mobile live-streaming requirements before relying on a phone for the first broadcast.
