If audio starts in sync but gradually slips against the video during a nonstop kirtan stream, first check sample-rate consistency and the audio-device chain; if it is offset by the same amount throughout, investigate a fixed delay instead. Before changing settings, compare a recognizable event near the start and later in the stream, then use OBS statistics and YouTube’s stream-health warnings to separate timing problems from network delivery issues.
First identify what kind of sync problem you have
Use a repeatable event—such as a visible handclap, a percussion strike, or a spoken cue—and compare its sound with the picture near the beginning and later in the stream or replay.
- Fixed offset: audio is already early or late at the start, and the mismatch stays roughly the same. Look for a consistent delay in the capture or processing path. A sync-offset adjustment may help only if the offset is genuinely steady.
- Accumulating drift: audio and video begin close together, but the mismatch grows over time. Check sample rates and whether separate audio devices or capture hardware have independent clocks.
- Intermittent breaks or stalls: inspect OBS statistics and YouTube stream health. Network delivery trouble can disrupt a stream, but dropped frames alone do not prove that audio clock drift is the cause.
There is no established drift cause unique to kirtan or devotional programming. The relevant checks are in the encoder, audio devices, and delivery path.
Fix audio drift step by step in OBS
1. Establish a baseline before changing settings
- Note whether the mismatch exists at the start or grows during the run.
- Save or review a local recording if available, then compare the same event near its beginning and at a later point.
- Write down current OBS audio settings, device sample rates, and any YouTube health warnings. Change one item at a time so you can tell whether a change helped.
2. Make sample rates agree across the audio chain
Check the sample rate configured in OBS, the operating system’s input and output devices, virtual audio devices, capture hardware, and any primary or backup stream outputs. A mismatch in the chain is a plausible source of drift or distortion. OBS forum discussions recommend consistency; one community reply recommends 48 kHz for its particular setup, but that is not a universal requirement. YouTube’s Live Streaming API lists 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz as recommended audio sample rates and flags primary/backup stream rate mismatches.

Choose a rate supported by the whole chain and make the devices agree. YouTube’s encoder guidance also gives sample-rate guidance; its specific mapping of 44.1 kHz to stereo and 48 kHz to 5.1 surround should not be generalized beyond those stated configurations. 3. Simplify multiple-device audio routing
If OBS receives audio from several USB devices or capture devices, test a simpler route using fewer devices. Physical devices may rely on independent clocks; an OBS forum discussion describes drift persisting even when nominal sample rates match. This is a plausible hardware-chain issue, not a rule that every multi-device setup will drift.

Compare keeping devices separate—checking each device’s rate and long-run behavior—with routing the sources through one interface. The practical trade-off is fewer independent clocks versus the inputs and setup flexibility you need. A single interface may be worth testing when several devices are involved, but buying one is not a guaranteed fix; settings alignment or routing changes may solve the issue without new hardware.
4. Check OBS statistics for delivery problems
Open OBS’s Statistics window while the stream runs and look for network-dropped frames and other performance indicators. OBS says dropped frames indicate an unstable connection or a connection that cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Treat that as a network or bitrate-capacity problem to investigate separately from sample-rate and clock checks. OBS notes that bitrate adaptation can reduce dropped frames at a quality cost. 5. Review YouTube Live stream health
Check YouTube Live’s health information for audio sample-rate, channel-configuration, or primary/backup stream mismatches and correct any reported issue. YouTube recommends RTMPS in its encoder guidance. RTMPS is a configuration recommendation, not a universal cure for timing drift.
6. Repeat the long-run comparison after each change
Make one change, then compare the beginning and a later point in a local recording and, when available, the actual live output or replay. If the local recording stays synchronized but the delivered stream does not, the problem may be farther along the delivery chain; the cited YouTube guidance does not establish a universal YouTube-side correction for that case. A short test may miss a gradual problem, so check a run long enough to reproduce the symptom.
