CloudFront is a delivery layer, not an encoder or packager: most viewer-facing workflows also need storage or an origin, and video packaged into segments and manifests.
Start with the kind of video workflow you have
These AWS services address different stages and purposes, so they are not interchangeable alternatives. First identify whether viewers choose from recorded assets, watch a live broadcast, interact with a live experience, or consume video sent by devices.
| Use case | AWS pattern to consider | Deciding question |
|---|---|---|
| Prerecorded library; viewers choose when to watch | MediaConvert + storage (often Amazon S3) + CloudFront | What output formats, packaging, retention, and distribution does playback require? |
| Live broadcast or continuous channel | MediaLive + MediaPackage or MediaStore + CloudFront | Do you need multiple playback formats, DRM, or other playback features, or does the encoded output already fit the target devices? |
| Live video embedded in an app or website where interaction and low latency matter | Amazon IVS | Does the application need an interactive live-video experience? |
| Camera or other device sends video for monitoring, processing, or analytics | Kinesis Video Streams | Do you need to ingest device video for live viewing, real-time processing, or later analysis? |
The patterns above are starting points, not a claim that every system needs every named component. Playback requirements, input, and delivery design determine which services belong in the finished architecture.
For prerecorded video, use a file-based workflow
Encode the source files
MediaConvert is AWS’s file-based encoding service for video-on-demand assets. It processes recorded files ahead of playback rather than encoding a real-time live feed. The outputs can be stored on a server or in Amazon S3; AWS commonly describes S3 as the storage step in this pattern. AWS’s CloudFront guide describes the VOD architecture.

Package and deliver for playback
Streaming playback generally requires media segments plus manifest files that describe how a player requests them. AWS lists formats including MPEG-DASH, Apple HLS, Microsoft Smooth Streaming, and CMAF. CloudFront can distribute VOD through an HTTP origin, but it does not replace the encoding and packaging work that produces playable streaming media. Choose output formats and packaging to suit the devices and playback clients you intend to support; do not assume that putting an arbitrary video file behind CloudFront makes it a streaming package.
Automate job submission when the library needs a repeatable pipeline
The Video on Demand on AWS Foundation workflow illustrates an event-driven option: an upload to an S3 bucket triggers Lambda to submit a MediaConvert job, CloudWatch tracks job status, and the output goes to a destination S3 bucket for delivery through CloudFront. This is an example architecture, not a requirement for every VOD project. See the AWS Video on Demand on AWS Foundation guidance.
For a live broadcast or continuous channel, separate encoding from preparation and delivery
Encode the real-time input with MediaLive
MediaLive is the live encoding choice in AWS’s broadcast-style pattern. It compresses the live feed into multiple encodings. A physical or on-premises encoder can be part of the live input path, but AWS’s service descriptions do not establish that every implementation needs external encoder hardware or endorse a particular model. Confirm the required input format and compatibility for your specific design before choosing equipment. AWS’s media streaming tutorials discuss live-streaming patterns.

Choose MediaPackage or MediaStore based on the output and playback needs
- Choose MediaPackage when the workflow needs the content prepared into multiple formats, DRM protection, or viewer playback features.
- Consider MediaStore when the encoder already produces formats suitable for the target devices and the MediaPackage preparation layer is not needed for the stated requirements.
Both paths can be paired with CloudFront for delivery. AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS solution describes MediaLive and MediaPackage producing adaptive-bitrate HLS, DASH, and CMAF streams for CloudFront; it also describes redundant inputs and content-protection capabilities. Those are capabilities of the documented solution pattern, not proof that every live workflow has identical redundancy or protection configured. Review the solution overview.
Decide what “24/7” means operationally
A continuous channel is still a live workflow: it needs an input, live encoding, the appropriate preparation or origin path, and delivery. Determine how the source will remain available and how you will handle interruptions before treating a design as always-on. AWS’s architecture descriptions establish service roles, but do not by themselves specify your operational procedures or guarantee uninterrupted playback.
Use IVS for an interactive app or website experience
Amazon IVS is positioned for low-latency live video in applications and websites, including interactive viewer experiences. Consider it when the product experience and application integration are central, rather than selecting a broadcast-oriented MediaLive pipeline by default. The AWS overview does not establish a numerical latency guarantee or a quantified latency comparison against MediaLive workflows, so verify latency needs and service behavior against the requirements for your own application. Use Kinesis Video Streams when video comes from devices
Kinesis Video Streams is for ingesting video from devices into AWS, with support for live viewing as data arrives, real-time or batch analytics, and retaining media for later access. AWS examples of sources include webcams and network cameras using RTSP. This makes it a better starting point for device ingestion, monitoring, and application processing than treating it as a general-purpose replacement for a VOD encoder or broadcast packaging workflow. Read the Kinesis Video Streams overview.
Check the architecture before choosing services
- Identify the source. Is it a finished file, a real-time production feed, or video sent by a camera or other device?
- Define the viewing experience. Is playback on demand, broadcast-style, interactive in an app, or primarily for monitoring?
- List the target playback formats and devices. For a live workflow, this helps decide whether MediaPackage’s multi-format preparation is needed or whether the existing encoded formats suit the target devices.
- Separate processing from delivery. Decide which service encodes or ingests the content, where it is stored or prepared, and how viewers or applications access it. CloudFront may deliver packaged video; it does not perform the upstream encoding or packaging by itself.
- Specify protection and continuity needs. If DRM, redundant inputs, retention, or a recovery procedure matters, make it an explicit requirement and verify that the selected architecture and configuration provide it.
- Estimate the full workflow, not a single service. Account for the services in the actual design, including encoding or ingestion, storage or origin, preparation, delivery, and any processing or automation. The cited AWS materials describe architectures but do not establish a price for your workload; use current AWS pricing for the chosen services and expected usage.
Common selection mistakes and how to avoid them
Using a live encoder for an on-demand file library
A prerecorded asset is a file-based job, so begin with MediaConvert rather than assuming a live service is needed. Plan where the encoded outputs live and how they will be packaged and delivered.

Expecting CloudFront to create streaming media
CloudFront distributes content from an origin. Confirm that the upstream workflow creates the segments and manifests required by the selected streaming formats before configuring delivery.

Adding MediaPackage without a playback requirement for it
MediaPackage is useful in the documented live pattern when multiple formats, DRM, or viewer playback features are needed. If the encoder already emits formats suitable for the target devices, assess whether MediaStore is the appropriate alternative instead.
Choosing IVS based on an assumed latency number
IVS is positioned for low-latency interactive experiences, but the AWS overview cited here does not provide a numeric guarantee or a measured comparison with a MediaLive workflow. Establish the application’s latency requirement and validate it against current service documentation and implementation behavior.
Assuming device video and broadcast video are the same problem
Kinesis Video Streams addresses device ingestion and application processing. MediaLive addresses real-time live encoding in a broadcast-style workflow. Choose based on what the source and downstream application need to do, not only on the fact that both involve live video.

If the goal is simply to loop uploaded videos on YouTube
If you do not need to design an AWS video architecture and instead want uploaded recordings to keep a YouTube channel live, StreamNeo is a distinct, narrower option: it runs prerecorded videos from the cloud to YouTube, rather than serving as an AWS pipeline for general-purpose video delivery or device ingestion.
Or let it run in the cloud
Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It accepts uploads as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; if YouTube drops the stream, it automatically tries to recover. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. This is for prerecorded video streamed to YouTube, not camera-based live production or delivery to other platforms. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
Conclusion
For most decisions, the source and viewing experience settle the first choice: MediaConvert for files, MediaLive for live broadcast encoding, IVS for interactive app or website live video, and Kinesis Video Streams for device video ingestion and processing. Then design the storage, packaging, and delivery layers around the playback formats, protection, and operational needs of the actual workflow.
