What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Choose a VPS for the encoder workload you will actually run—not by looking for a universal “minimum” CPU or RAM figure. A compatible file that can be passed through needs less compute than a stream that must be re-encoded; continuous bitrate determines a large part of your monthly outbound transfer; and the server’s route to YouTube, plan limits, and restart and monitoring setup matter as much as its headline specifications.
Start by defining what the VPS must do
A VPS is the remote computer that runs your streaming software. It can keep an encoder running when your home computer is off, but it does not make a stream self-maintaining: the instance must have enough sustained resources and network capacity for the job, and the encoder needs supervision and monitoring.
Before comparing plans, specify the media and output you intend to use: resolution, frame rate, video and audio codecs, bitrate, whether you will add graphics or filters, and whether you will record locally. YouTube’s current guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds; it recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery to its servers. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings for your chosen codec and confirm the applicable options in YouTube Studio.
Choose CPU and RAM for the encoding job
Passing through compatible media
If your source already matches the output you plan to send, FFmpeg may be able to stream-copy the video rather than re-encode it. Stream-copying can avoid the substantial video-encoding work, but it does not remove the need for a stable network connection, a working audio/video format, disk space for the operating system and software, or a process that can recover after interruption.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Re-encoding or processing video
If you need to scale, add graphics, change codecs, convert frame rate, or otherwise filter the source, the VPS has to process the output in real time. That workload depends on the media settings, encoder, and filters; the available guidance does not establish a universal CPU or RAM minimum. A plan’s advertised vCPU count alone cannot tell you whether it will sustain your particular job.
- Run the actual stream command on the candidate class of instance before committing to unattended operation.
- Check CPU and memory pressure while the stream is running, not just when the server is idle.
- Leave headroom for the operating system, streaming software, and transient load; if the encoder cannot keep up, reduce the workload or choose a larger instance.
Calculate continuous outbound transfer
Bitrate is a practical starting point for estimating data sent from the VPS. YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingestion rates include 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps in the guidance accessed in 2026. These are ingest recommendations, not VPS specifications. The same guidance result lists 4 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps. Applicable settings can depend on codec and YouTube’s live control room options.

At a constant payload bitrate, 10 Mbps works out to approximately 108 GB per day in decimal units; 12 Mbps is approximately 130 GB per day. These are arithmetic estimates from bitrate and elapsed time, before protocol overhead—not provider allowances. For a first-pass monthly estimate, multiply your bitrate by the hours you expect to stream, then account for overhead, other outbound traffic, and any additional streams.
Before buying, check the current plan’s included outbound transfer, how the provider measures it, overage charges, sustained network capacity, and any fair-use terms. A port-speed figure does not show how much monthly transfer is included or what it costs to exceed the allowance.

Compare location, storage, and plan terms
Location and route to YouTube
A nearby data center is a reasonable place to start comparing, but geographic distance alone does not establish the best route or ingest performance. Test the real outbound route and stream stability from each candidate location using your intended workload. Treat the live test—not a location label—as the evidence for your setup.
Persistent storage
If the VPS only streams media held elsewhere, persistent disk may mainly be needed for the operating system, software, logs, and working files. If you will store source media or record output on the server, include that capacity in your plan. There is no fixed storage amount that fits every stream; it depends on what you retain and for how long.

Set up supervision, monitoring, and a full test
A VPS does not guarantee an uninterrupted YouTube stream. Run the encoder under a service manager such as systemd or another supervisor so it can restart after a process crash or server reboot. Configure the service with your own command, media paths, credentials, and restart policy; those details differ between setups, so do not copy a generic command without checking it.

- Review FFmpeg output and errors so you can spot encoder failures or input problems.
- Watch CPU and memory pressure to identify a VPS that cannot sustain the workload.
- Monitor network conditions and YouTube’s stream health during a test broadcast.
- Check disk space if the stream writes logs, stores media, or records output locally.
- Test the complete setup, including recovery after a controlled process restart and server reboot, before relying on it unattended.
YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event. Use its encoder guidance to confirm ingest settings and troubleshoot delivery. A setup that starts successfully once is not proof that it can run continuously.
