Choose the highest resolution and frame rate that your encoder and outbound connection can sustain reliably—with YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrate and 20% upload headroom. For H.264, YouTube lists 720p30 and 720p60 at 8 Mbps recommended, 1080p30 at 14 Mbps, and 1080p60 at 17 Mbps. These are live-ingest recommendations, not guarantees; test your actual stream and lower the setting if it is unstable.
Start with the content and connection, not the biggest number
There is no special YouTube resolution requirement for a 24/7 stream. Resolution is one part of an encoder setup that also includes codec and frame rate. Your choice should reflect the visual detail viewers need, whether motion benefits from a higher frame rate, and the upload capacity available where the stream will run.
A documentary channel built around pre-recorded footage may not benefit from 60 fps if its videos were made at 30 fps. Conversely, footage with fast movement may look smoother at 60 fps, provided the encoder and connection can support it. A lower setting that remains stable is a more practical choice than a higher one that repeatedly loses connection or buffers.
Use YouTube’s bitrate recommendations for your exact setting
YouTube’s live encoder recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec. The table below gives the H.264 reference values for common settings. YouTube Help’s pages were checked on 2026-10-03; they do not state a publication year.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Ingest setting | H.264 minimum bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | A lower-bandwidth choice for content that does not need more detail or frame rate. |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | When smoother motion matters and the source is 60 fps. |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps | When additional image detail matters and the connection has sufficient capacity. |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps | When both higher detail and smoother motion are useful and sustainable. |
These figures are for H.264 live ingest, not uploaded-video recommendations. YouTube provides different bitrate ranges for AV1 and H.265/HEVC, so use the recommendation for your actual codec rather than applying the H.264 numbers to another encoder format. See YouTube Help’s live encoder settings and live streaming troubleshooting guidance.
Check the upload capacity with headroom
YouTube advises that the total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room. In its words: “Have enough bandwidth: The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available. Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” The guidance comes from YouTube Help; the page names no individual speaker.

- Measure outbound upload performance where and when the stream will actually run. A result from a different connection or time may not represent the continuous stream’s conditions.
- Compare the stream’s total bitrate with the available upload capacity. Keep the planned stream within capacity and reserve the recommended 20% headroom instead of budgeting the entire connection for video.
- Account for every outgoing stream. If you send primary and backup streams, include both in the bandwidth calculation.
- If the recommended setting does not fit reliably with headroom, reduce resolution or frame rate and test again. This is a practical response to YouTube’s bandwidth and reliability guidance, not an automatic YouTube fallback rule.
Connection reliability matters as well as a speed measurement: an interruption can break the stream. YouTube does not specify a minimum connection speed or a guaranteed stability period for 24/7 broadcasting.
Test the complete setup before relying on it
Test the actual resolution, frame rate, codec, audio, and representative movement. YouTube Help says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Monitor stream health and messages during the test and while live; a nominal bitrate alone does not demonstrate that the complete setup is stable.

- Set the encoder to the intended codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.
- Run a test using audio and footage with movement comparable to the planned broadcast.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health status and messages for connection or ingest problems.
- If the stream is unstable, reduce resolution or frame rate, then repeat the test under representative conditions.
Understand what resolution viewers receive
The resolution you send is your ingest setting; it does not mean every viewer receives exactly that one format. YouTube says it creates multiple output formats so viewers can watch across devices and network conditions. Viewer playback quality may vary, so choose a reliable source stream rather than assuming that sending a higher resolution guarantees a particular experience for every audience member.
Keep latency separate from resolution
Latency is a separate choice from resolution and bitrate. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering. If a 24/7 channel mainly plays documentaries and does not interact with viewers in real time, low latency may be less important; consider whether immediate interaction is worth the possible buffering trade-off. YouTube’s separate advice for 360-degree livestreaming prefers 1440p or 2160p when supported. That is a special-format recommendation, not a rule for ordinary documentary streams. See YouTube Help on latency.
