Either way, verify how it reconnects, what it costs in your actual setup, and how you will handle YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit before committing.
Start with the kind of service you need
A 24/7 prerecorded stream needs an encoder or service that sends video to YouTube. The key choice is who operates that workflow: a managed service with playlist controls, or a cloud media platform that you configure and maintain.
Managed playlist-streaming service
A managed service is the simpler fit when the job is to play uploaded recordings continuously. YouTube’s encoder directory lists Gyre and Upstream as cloud options for 24/7 prerecorded streaming. It also lists AWS Elemental MediaLive among verified software encoders. Configurable cloud media workflow
A cloud media platform gives a technically capable team more control over processing and distribution, but also leaves that team responsible for configuration, monitoring, cost management, and recovery. AWS Elemental MediaLive is one verified encoder option in YouTube’s directory; Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is another kind of platform to evaluate. Do not assume a cloud platform automatically provides playlist management or uninterrupted playback: confirm the exact workflow and operational responsibilities with the provider.

Set up YouTube before you select a long-running workflow
- Enable livestreaming. YouTube says first-time livestream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the time you intend to launch. YouTube’s encoder instructions
- Create or select a stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream or broadcast you plan to use.
- Give the encoder its connection details. Copy the YouTube server URL and stream key into the encoder or service. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or share it with people who should not control the stream.
- Start transmission and check the handoff. Confirm the encoder is sending video and audio and that the intended YouTube broadcast is receiving it before relying on the setup continuously.
YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A stream running for 24 hours should have a deliberate archive plan: decide how you will preserve recordings and start a new broadcast or segment rather than relying on one automatic archive for the full day. Check protocol requirements only when your workflow uses HLS
HLS is a protocol-level option, not a setting every managed service exposes or requires you to configure. If you are building an HLS ingest workflow, YouTube’s developer documentation specifies muxed M2TS audio and video, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, up to 60 fps, and closed GOP. It also requires HTTPS and persistent connections, and limits outstanding media segments in a playlist to five. Check the full implementation requirements before building around HLS. Estimate total cost, not just encoder cost
For a custom cloud workflow, include every component you will actually use: encoding and packaging, storage, transfer, and any viewer delivery that your design—not YouTube—must provide. Resolution, bitrate, region, hours, and audience size can change the total substantially.

AWS’s deployment guide gives an illustrative estimate of $69.74 for an approximately 1,000-viewer, one-hour 540p event in US East (N. Virginia): $2.50 for encoding and packaging plus $67.24 for distribution. AWS says the assumptions are intentionally straightforward and may overstate actual costs, and recommends checking current service pricing. For Google Cloud’s Live Stream API, billing is based on active channel time and input/output resolution and codec. The API applies a ten-minute minimum and rounds active duration up to the next minute; a channel can be active even without an input stream.
