In YouTube Studio, select the intended stream in Live Control Room, then compare its current stream URL and stream key with the destination and key configured in FFmpeg. Start FFmpeg and check that the feed appears in that stream’s preview before you go live. The preview shows YouTube is receiving media on the selected stream; comparing the configuration is what checks which key FFmpeg is set to use.
Check the destination stream in YouTube Studio
- Open the intended stream. In YouTube Studio, go to Create → Go live and select the scheduled stream or stream configuration you intend FFmpeg to publish to. Confirm the stream identity before copying credentials. YouTube’s reuse-settings feature can carry forward a previous stream’s metadata, settings, and key, so a familiar title or old configuration is not enough to confirm the destination. See YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
- Compare the server URL. In the selected stream’s Live Control Room settings, find the stream URL or server address. Compare it with the destination configured for FFmpeg. Do not rely on an old command or a URL copied from a different scheduled stream. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe entering both the stream URL and key in the encoder: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Compare the stream key. Copy the key shown for that selected stream and check it against the key FFmpeg is configured to use. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a credential: do not expose it in screenshots, public logs, shell history, or support posts. If your configuration masks the key, compare it by replacing the configured value with the current one rather than revealing it in shared output.
Verify the incoming feed before going live
Start FFmpeg, then watch the preview for the selected stream in Live Control Room. For a scheduled stream, wait for the incoming preview before selecting Go live. YouTube recommends checking the preview before starting the event; its guidance is available in Streaming tips.
A preview is useful confirmation that YouTube is receiving media for the stream open in Live Control Room. It does not display the literal key FFmpeg used, so retain the configuration comparison as the direct check of which key FFmpeg is set to use.
Check the protocol-specific URL
RTMP or RTMPS
Make sure the URL configured in FFmpeg matches the URL shown for the protocol you intend to use. If you are using RTMPS, copy the RTMPS address from Live Control Room rather than assuming the displayed RTMP address is interchangeable. YouTube notes that the regular RTMP URL may appear by default; its instructions explain how to reveal the RTMPS URL and identify port 443 as a troubleshooting setting when needed. See Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.

HLS
For an HLS workflow, confirm that the encoder supports HLS and that the key is configured for HLS. YouTube’s HLS setup uses an HTTPS ingestion URL, so compare FFmpeg’s destination with the HLS URL shown for that setup—not an RTMP or RTMPS address. Details are in Set up an HLS stream.
If the selected stream does not receive a preview
- FFmpeg reports a startup or authentication error: In the selected stream’s Live Control Room settings, copy the current key into FFmpeg’s configuration and retry. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends copying the key from Live Control Room into the encoder: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
- No preview appears: Recheck that you selected the intended stream, then compare both its current URL and key with FFmpeg’s configuration. Inspect FFmpeg’s own output and check the outbound connection. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance distinguishes encoder-side problems from outbound internet problems and recommends checking the encoded stream’s look and sound.
- RTMPS connection or SSL problem: Verify that FFmpeg is using the RTMPS URL shown by YouTube. If needed, consult YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting instructions about port 443.
- HLS does not connect: Verify HLS support in the encoder and use the HTTPS ingestion URL and HLS-configured key for the selected stream.
- The key may have been exposed or reset: Reset it in Live Control Room, then update FFmpeg’s configuration to use the newly generated key. YouTube says channel owners or managers can reset stream keys; changing the YouTube key alone does not update the value stored in FFmpeg.
These checks cover the YouTube-side setup and troubleshooting workflow. YouTube’s cited guidance does not prescribe FFmpeg-specific command-line syntax, so use the configuration controls appropriate to your own FFmpeg setup rather than assuming a particular flag or command form.
