In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live, choose or create a stream, then use Stream settings in Live Control Room to set latency and DVR. Copy the stream key and Stream URL into your encoder; keep the key secret because it lets an encoder send video to your channel.
Open Live Control Room and find the settings
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Create > Go live.
- Select an existing stream or create one.
- In Live Control Room, open Stream settings. This is where YouTube provides latency controls, DVR, the stream key, and the Stream URL.
Exact encoder field names vary by software. Look for a server or URL field for the Stream URL and a Stream Key field for the key.
Choose a latency setting
Latency is the delay between the encoder or camera capturing an event and viewers seeing it. YouTube’s guidance frames the choice as a balance among interaction, buffering, and resolution support.
| Setting | Best fit | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Normal latency | Non-interactive broadcasts, including a documentary screening where viewers do not need to respond in real time | YouTube describes this as its highest-quality option for viewers, with the lowest viewer buffering. It supports all resolutions and live features. |
| Low latency | Some interaction, such as polls, when an immediate response is not essential | YouTube says most viewers experience latency under 10 seconds. This is approximate platform guidance, not a guarantee. 4K is not supported. |
| Ultra-low latency | Real-time conversation with viewers | YouTube says most viewers experience latency under five seconds. This is approximate platform guidance, not a guarantee. Buffering is more likely, network ingestion problems can affect viewers more, and 4K is not supported. |
For 2160p/4K, YouTube says the option to improve for low latency is unavailable; streams are optimized for quality at Normal latency. Webcam and mobile streams are set up for interactivity, and YouTube does not let creators manually choose latency for those stream types.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A practical selection order
- Decide whether viewers need to interact quickly. If not, choose Normal latency.
- Check the target resolution. If it is 4K, use Normal latency.
- For a lower-resolution interactive stream, choose Low or Ultra-low according to how quickly replies need to reach you, while accounting for the greater buffering tradeoff.
- Use a setting your internet connection can sustain. Test with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast, and monitor stream health and warnings while live.
YouTube’s encoder guidance gives bitrate ranges by resolution, frame rate, and ingestion codec rather than one universal bitrate. Check its table for your specific configuration: YouTube recommended upload encoding settings.
Copy the stream key and URL into your encoder
- In Live Control Room, open the Stream tab and find the Stream key section.
- Copy the stream key. Copy the Stream URL from Live Control Room as well. If using RTMPS, reveal the secure URL with the lock icon beside Stream URL, then copy it.
- In your encoder, select its YouTube preset if available. Otherwise enter the Stream URL in the server or URL field and the key in the Stream Key field.
- Start the encoder and check Live Control Room for the incoming feed and stream-health warnings before proceeding with the broadcast.
YouTube describes the key as the information that tells your encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. Treat it like a password: do not publish or share it. RTMPS is RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection and encrypts the connection. If a key is exposed, reset it in the Stream key section and update the encoder with the replacement; only channel owners or managers can reset keys. See YouTube’s stream key guidance.

Enable or disable DVR
DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume a live stream from where they paused. In the stream dashboard, open Stream settings, then under Additional settings, toggle Enable DVR.
- Viewers cannot seek back to a point before the stream began.
- DVR can be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours.
- A DVR change made while live applies to viewers who start playing after the change; it does not change the experience for viewers already watching.
- Disabling DVR is not supported for webcam and mobile streaming.
For a long screening or continuous broadcast, decide whether pausing and rewinding during the live window matters, and account for the documented limitation on streams beyond 12 hours. YouTube’s instructions are at YouTube DVR settings.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
- The encoder does not connect: Check that the Stream URL and key were copied from the selected stream and placed in the appropriate encoder fields. If the key was reset, replace the old key in the encoder.
- The key may have been exposed: Reset it from the Stream key section and update the encoder. A channel owner or manager must perform the reset.
- Viewers report buffering: Consider Normal latency if real-time interaction is unnecessary. Test the internet connection at the selected stream quality and check YouTube’s stream-health warnings. Low and Ultra-low latency are more susceptible to buffering.
- 4K is unavailable with the chosen latency: Low and Ultra-low do not support 4K. At 2160p, YouTube optimizes for quality at Normal latency.
- Viewers cannot rewind far enough: DVR does not allow seeking to before the stream started, and it may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours.
- A DVR change did not affect current viewers: Changes made during a live stream apply to viewers who start playback after the change.
- Latency controls are missing for a webcam or mobile stream: YouTube sets these stream types up for interactivity, without manual latency selection; disabling DVR is also unsupported for them.
