How to Check Whether FFmpeg Is Dropping Frames in a YouTube Live Stream

FFmpeg’s counters show local process activity, not what YouTube received. Learn how to read live progress, check frame-rate conversion and timestamps, and compare the result with YouTube’s stream status.

Check FFmpeg’s live status first, then compare its output with YouTube’s stream-health information. FFmpeg can show what its local process is encoding or sending—including frame counts, speed, timestamps, and any duplicate or drop counters—but that alone cannot prove what YouTube received or what viewers saw.

Read FFmpeg’s live status

FFmpeg’s -stats status is enabled by default. It reports encoding progress and statistics, with a documented default update interval of 0.5 seconds. While the stream is running, note the frame count, reported frame rate, output time, speed, and any dup or drop counters shown by your installed version. These describe the local FFmpeg process and output; they are not end-to-end delivery measurements.

Field names and displayed counters can vary by version and command. Check your installed build with ffmpeg -version and consult the documentation for that version if its status output differs from examples you have seen.

Capture machine-readable progress

For logging or a monitoring script, add the global option -progress pipe:1. FFmpeg writes periodic key-value records to standard output. Each update ends with progress=continue; the final update ends with progress=end. Use -stats_period to set the reporting interval.

ffmpeg -stats_period 1 -progress pipe:1 -i INPUT [existing options] OUTPUT

This is an illustration, not a complete streaming command: keep your existing input, encoder, YouTube destination, and output options. If software parses standard output, keep it separate from other text so the records remain readable; capture standard error separately for human-readable warnings and diagnostics.

Check whether your command is changing the frame rate

Before treating a reported drop as an unexpected failure, inspect where -r appears and whether FFmpeg is encoding or stream-copying video. The option’s meaning depends on that context.

Command behavior What -r means
Input -r Tells FFmpeg to ignore stored timestamps and assume a constant input frame rate. It is not interchangeable with -framerate, which is used with formats such as image sequences and video capture devices.
Output -r during video encoding Requests a constant output frame rate; FFmpeg may duplicate or drop frames before encoding to reach it.
Output -r during stream copy Changes the frame rate declared to the muxer; it does not drop or duplicate the copied data.

Compare the intended output rate with FFmpeg’s reported rate and inspect the command’s option placement. A duplicate or drop associated with frame-rate conversion is different from evidence that frames were lost in transit to YouTube.

Investigate timing when counts or playback do not agree

Use timestamp debugging carefully

FFmpeg’s -debug_ts option prints timestamp and latency debugging information. The project warns that this output may change, so it is not a stable interface for portable scripts. Use it for investigation, not as a durable log format that assumes fixed fields.

Inspect frames with showinfo

The showinfo filter logs basic packet information for debugging and development. It can help you inspect timestamp progression and spot irregularities, but it does not automatically identify every cause or establish what YouTube received.

Check YouTube’s receiving-side status separately

Open the live stream’s status or health information in YouTube’s interface and compare it with the time period in FFmpeg’s log. Treat this as a separate observation: a clean FFmpeg counter does not guarantee that YouTube received every frame, and an FFmpeg drop counter does not by itself explain the stream viewers saw.

Use this order to narrow down the cause

  1. Record the local evidence: save FFmpeg’s status or -progress output, including frame count, reported rate, output time, speed, and any duplicate/drop counters.
  2. Compare rates: check the intended output rate against the rate FFmpeg reports, and inspect whether output -r is forcing conversion during encoding.
  3. Check timestamps: if playback or counts disagree, investigate timestamp progression with -debug_ts or showinfo, keeping their limitations in mind.
  4. Compare with YouTube separately: review the stream’s receiving-side status for the same period. Do not treat either system’s evidence as a substitute for the other.
