In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live, select the live stream, then choose Edit > Monetization. Confirm that Monetization is set to On. That verifies the stream-level setting—not that every viewer will see an ad or that the channel and content meet every other requirement.
Check the stream’s monetization setting
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Create > Go live.
- Open the Stream tab to work with a stream, or choose a scheduled stream from Manage.
- Select Edit > Monetization.
- Check that Monetization is set to On. YouTube documents this as the ad setting for an individual live stream. YouTube Help: Monetize your live stream
If the stream is already live, inspect its settings in Live Control Room. The setting is only one part of eligibility: check the channel’s program status and monetization terms as well.
Check channel eligibility and terms
- YouTube Partner Program: YouTube says creators must be in the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) to choose ad monetization for a live stream.
- Watch Page Monetization Module: To earn Watch Page ad and YouTube Premium revenue from live streams, accept this module in YouTube Studio’s Earn section. YouTube Help: YouTube Partner Program overview and eligibility
If the stream toggle is on but the channel is not monetized through YPP or the required module has not been accepted, the toggle alone does not establish that the channel can earn those revenues.
Understand what “eligible” does—and does not—mean
For a 24/7 stream, check the same documented live-stream controls and requirements as for other live streams. YouTube’s guidance does not identify a separate 24/7 eligibility switch, nor does it promise that a continuously running stream will show ads continuously.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Program status: Is the channel in YPP?
- Agreement: Has the Watch Page Monetization Module been accepted for Watch Page ad and YouTube Premium revenue?
- Stream setting: Is Monetization On for this specific stream?
- Content: Does it comply with advertiser-friendly guidelines, and is it free of an age restriction that would make it ineligible for monetization?
- Format and viewing context: Is it horizontal or vertical, and is it playing in an external embed with autoplay?
- Ad delivery: Did an ad actually serve to a particular viewer? A positive answer is not guaranteed just because the earlier checks pass.
YouTube states that content monetized with ads must follow its advertiser-friendly content guidelines. Content that is not suitable for all audiences may be age restricted and ineligible for monetization; content that does not meet advertiser-friendly guidelines may receive limited or no ads. YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams too. YouTube Help: Advertiser-friendly content guidelines
Choose how live ads are handled
When monetization is on for a live stream, YouTube says pre-roll and display ads are automatically turned on. For mid-rolls, the stream’s Monetization panel lets you inspect or choose the available approach. These controls affect ad placement; none guarantees an ad impression.

| Setting | How it works | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic mid-rolls | YouTube places mid-rolls at natural breakpoints. You can select a frequency level. | YouTube recommends this option. Its automatic behavior can reduce interruptions for channel members, temporarily pause mid-rolls for some viewers interacting with gifts or Super Chat and Stickers, and snooze ads during high-engagement moments. |
| Scheduled mid-rolls | Choose an interval of 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes. | These are fixed intervals rather than automatic placement at natural breakpoints. |
| Manual mid-rolls | Insert breaks while live. | You must actively place breaks; if you insert none, no mid-roll ads will be served. |
YouTube says scheduled or manual settings may have lower earnings potential than automatic mode, but no mode guarantees delivery to each viewer. YouTube also recommends automatic mid-rolls in its live ad settings guidance.
Delay automatic mid-rolls when needed
In Live Control Room, Delay ads can delay automatic mid-rolls for 10 minutes; a countdown appears before ads resume. YouTube cautions that manually placed mid-rolls still display while Delay ads is on. YouTube Help: Manage live stream ad breaks

Why some viewers may not see ads
YouTube Help states, “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” Viewers may receive automatic mid-rolls at different times. A viewer who is not served an ad continues watching the stream; a viewer who skips or finishes an ad rejoins it. Therefore, a stream set to On can be monetized without showing an ad to every viewer or at every possible slot. YouTube Help: Monetize your live stream
Check stream format and where it is watched
- Horizontal versus vertical: YouTube’s feature comparison lists pre-roll and mid-roll ads as supported for horizontal live streams, but not for vertical live feeds. If the stream is vertical and these ad options are absent, that is a documented format limitation, not necessarily a Studio error. YouTube Help: Compare features for live streams
- External player with autoplay: When a live stream is embedded on an external site and the player has autoplay enabled, YouTube says ads are turned off for that live stream. This specific rule does not establish whether ads will appear in other embed situations. YouTube Help: Monetize your live stream
Interpret YouTube’s automatic mid-roll statistic carefully
YouTube reported that creators who turned on automatic live mid-roll ads had over 20% average uplift in in-stream ad revenue per hour compared with channels that did not, across 207 countries. This was a platform-reported comparison from January 2024—not a guaranteed result, an individual-channel forecast, or proof that automatic mid-rolls caused that outcome. Troubleshoot an ad eligibility or delivery problem
| What you see | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Monetization is Off, or ad controls are unavailable. | Check the channel’s YPP status and whether the Watch Page Monetization Module has been accepted in Studio’s Earn section. | Resolve the channel-level requirements, then return to the stream’s Edit > Monetization panel. |
| Monetization is On, but a viewer reports no ad. | Remember that YouTube does not guarantee an ad slot will serve to every viewer. | Check more than one viewing session and context, but do not treat an individual viewer’s experience as proof the stream toggle is off. |
| The stream has limited or no ads. | Review advertiser-friendly suitability and any age restriction. | Read YouTube’s advertiser-friendly content guidelines; Monetization On does not override content decisions. |
| Pre-roll or mid-roll options appear unavailable. | Check whether the stream is a vertical live feed. | YouTube’s format comparison says these live ad types are not supported for vertical live feeds. |
| Ads do not appear in an embedded stream. | Check whether the external player uses autoplay. | YouTube says autoplay in an externally embedded live player turns ads off for that stream. |
| Automatic ads resume later than expected. | See whether Delay ads is active and check its countdown. | Allow the 10-minute delay to finish; note that manual mid-rolls still display during the delay. |
| No mid-rolls appear with manual placement selected. | Check whether any ad breaks were inserted while live. | Manual mode serves no mid-roll ads if no breaks are inserted. |
Keep a 24/7 YouTube stream running without leaving a computer on
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the cloud loops the video so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. This changes how the stream is run, not its YouTube ad eligibility: you still need to check YPP, the Watch Page Monetization Module, stream settings, content suitability, and ad-delivery conditions in YouTube Studio.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, the steps are: upload your video or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, then go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free day.
