Use three checks: run ffprobe to inspect the file’s container and streams, decode the entire file with ffmpeg, then play it in the OBS playlist setup you intend to use. A successful probe alone does not verify that the whole video and audio payload can be decoded.
1. Keep the original file and inspect it with FFprobe
Run checks on the candidate file without overwriting it. If errors appear, preserve the original and obtain a fresh copy before trying any repair.
With FFmpeg tools installed, open PowerShell, Command Prompt, or a terminal and run:
ffprobe -v error -show_error -show_format -show_streams "input.mp4"Replace input.mp4 with the file’s path. Keep quotation marks around paths containing spaces. FFprobe reports format and stream information and can report probe errors. Check that the expected video and audio streams appear and that the output contains the basic container information you expect.

This is a first screen, not a full integrity test: FFprobe can report metadata after reading enough of the file’s structure without decoding every frame or audio packet.
2. Decode the complete file with FFmpeg
Next, ask FFmpeg to read and decode the input while discarding the decoded output. This creates no converted video file:

ffmpeg -v error -i "input.mp4" -f null -Let the command finish. Review any output as well as the final exit status. Errors or warnings during the pass are reasons to investigate; a clean pass means this FFmpeg build decoded the file without reporting errors at the chosen log level. It does not guarantee that a different player or OBS configuration will behave the same way.
Interpret failures cautiously
- A decode error may indicate damaged or unreadable media, but a file can sometimes be partly decoded despite errors.
- A successful exit status does not necessarily mean there were no recoverable issues; inspect the log too.
- FFmpeg provides stricter diagnostic options, including
-xerrorand-err_detectmodes for checks such as CRC, bitstream, buffer, and explode. Treat strict-mode failures as diagnostic evidence, not automatic proof that every player will fail: strict checks can stop on standards deviations or damaged packets that another player might conceal or skip.
Exact option behavior and diagnostic wording can vary by FFmpeg build. If a result is unclear, keep the original and compare with a fresh copy rather than treating a single command as a repair.

3. Test the file in the OBS playlist source
OBS documents VLC Video as its playlist-capable source; it uses VLC libraries and requires VLC to be installed. OBS’s guide says that with 64-bit OBS, you should install 64-bit VLC. The OBS guide describes the distinction this way: “Unlike Media Source, you can create a playlist of items, similar to an Image Slideshow.” OBS Media Sources guide (published January 11, 2022).
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. Match its architecture to OBS; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, create a test scene and add a VLC Video Source.
- Add the candidate file to the source’s playlist and use the same loop or shuffle settings you plan to use on air.
- Check playback near the beginning, middle, and end. Listen for audio if the file is expected to contain it.
This test checks the actual OBS/VLC route, while FFmpeg checks the file using its own build and decoders. A supported extension is not a guarantee that a specific file is healthy. Likewise, a failure in OBS is not by itself proof of corruption: VLC may be missing or mismatched, the path may be inaccessible, or codec details and software versions may differ. What each check tells you

Common problems and fixes
FFprobe reports an error or expected streams are missing
Confirm the path and filename, then try a fresh copy of the file. A missing expected stream may mean the file is incomplete or is not the version you intended to add; do not overwrite the original while diagnosing.
FFmpeg prints errors but exits successfully
Read the log rather than relying on the exit status alone. The decoder may have recovered from some issues. If you need a stricter diagnostic, consult the options supported by your installed FFmpeg build; strict settings can flag cases that do not prove every playback route will fail.

The file decodes in FFmpeg but does not play in OBS
Check that you added it to VLC Video Source, that VLC is installed with the architecture OBS requires, and that the source can access the file path. Then verify the installed OBS and VLC versions. FFmpeg decode success and OBS playlist playback are related but distinct checks.
The file plays in OBS but has glitches or missing audio
Check the affected section in the source file and review FFmpeg’s decode output. Confirm that the expected audio stream appeared in FFprobe and that the playlist source is configured to play the item as intended. Preserve the source and compare against a fresh copy if errors persist.
