YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; it does not promise automatic archiving for a single 24-hour session. The FFmpeg example below is an illustrative template, not a tested command.
Before you build the stream: clear the music and video rights
Do not start with the encoder if you do not have permission to use every recording and visual in the program. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder; if the matched content continues, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. A license does not necessarily prevent that interruption: YouTube advises creators who have licensed third-party material to ask the relevant rightsholder to add their channel to the Content ID allowlist.
Clear the rights for the specific sound recordings, compositions, performances, artwork, video clips, and other material in your playlist, as applicable. Confirm that your permission covers a continuous YouTube livestream and any archive you plan to keep. Keep records of permissions and allowlisting arrangements. YouTube also notes that an archived live video can receive a separate Content ID claim after the stream ends; that is distinct from a match that interrupts a live broadcast. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
How do I create the YouTube Live encoder stream?
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create a stream or select the live stream you intend to use. For the encoder workflow, YouTube provides a server URL and a stream key.
- Copy the server URL and stream key into your FFmpeg output settings. Treat the key as a credential: do not expose it in public scripts, screenshots, repositories, or logs. If you believe it has been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Start the encoder, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Do not assume the broadcast is reaching viewers merely because FFmpeg has started. Confirm that YouTube receives the signal and that its status and preview look right.
YouTube’s complete encoder setup instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Which FFmpeg settings should I use for YouTube Live?
YouTube accepts RTMP and RTMPS ingestion and recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection to Google’s servers. Its listed video codecs are H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; listed audio codecs are AAC and MP3. YouTube recommends constant bitrate encoding, supports frame rates up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the applicable resolution, frame rate, and codec.
Choose settings your encoder supports and your internet connection can sustain. For one specific reference point, YouTube’s table recommends 10 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30; this is not a universal bitrate for other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs. Leave upload headroom rather than setting the stream at the full result of a speed test, and test with representative motion and audio before relying on the setup.

Illustrative Debian FFmpeg template
The following is a starting template for one authorized video file, not a tested command or a guarantee that your installed FFmpeg build supports every option shown. Replace the placeholders with your file, YouTube server URL, stream key, and chosen bitrate. Check the local build with ffmpeg -version and consult documentation matching that build before using version-sensitive flags. Debian Bookworm’s command reference is available at ffmpeg(1) for Debian Bookworm.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "/path/to/authorized-video.mp4"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 10M -maxrate 10M -bufsize 20M
-r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "rtmps://YOUR-YOUTUBE-SERVER/YOUR-STREAM-KEY"
This example loops one input file, encodes H.264 video at an illustrative 10 Mbps target and 30 fps, sets a 60-frame GOP (two seconds at 30 fps), and sends AAC audio in an FLV output over an RTMPS URL. Its bitrate corresponds to YouTube’s stated H.264 1080p30 recommendation only if the actual output is configured for that resolution and frame rate; the example does not force a resolution. Inspect the source dimensions and choose output dimensions deliberately if scaling is needed. Confirm the server URL format and current ingest requirements in YouTube Studio rather than assuming a placeholder URL is usable.

For a playlist of separate files, validate the playlist input, timestamps, and reconnect behavior with your installed FFmpeg version before leaving it unattended. A simple loop flag for one file does not establish a robust playlist or recovery system. Keep a known-good local copy of your command with the stream key stored privately.
How do I test and keep the stream healthy?
- Test upload capacity. Run a speed test from the Debian host or its network. Judge the sustainable upload rate, not just a brief peak, against the chosen video and audio bitrate.
- Test the complete program. Send representative video motion and audio to YouTube before launch. Check the preview for picture, sound, aspect ratio, and dropped or degraded output.
- Monitor Live Control Room. Watch stream health and read YouTube’s messages during the test and broadcast. A running FFmpeg process does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
- Plan for failure and recovery. Decide who or what will notice a stopped process, failed network, or rejected ingest, and how the encoder will be restarted and checked in Studio. For a continuous channel, test the recovery procedure rather than assuming FFmpeg or YouTube will reconnect successfully in every case.
FFmpeg flags and playlist behavior can vary with the installed build and input files. No Debian service configuration or command in this guide has been tested; verify the command against your system and YouTube’s current settings before depending on it.

Can one YouTube live stream run all day?
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not guarantee that a single 24-hour session will be archived, nor does it establish that an FFmpeg process or ingest will remain uninterrupted for a full day. If you need a persistent channel, plan monitoring and re-establishment of the stream, and verify YouTube’s current limits and behavior before deciding how to schedule sessions. Do not promise viewers that a long session will produce an archive unless you have confirmed the applicable platform behavior.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want to avoid maintaining an always-on Debian host, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for looping uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
