The encoder and its source must keep running, and someone should monitor the stream and respond to interruptions: “24/7” is an operating plan, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service.
1. Check that your YouTube channel can livestream
Before preparing a long-running program, confirm livestream access in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. YouTube’s current eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. It also sets a minimum age of 16 for livestreaming. Enable access and resolve any restrictions ahead of your planned launch.
YouTube’s current live-stream help page also sets limits of 10 active streams per channel and three active streams per stream key. These limits matter if you plan to run multiple feeds or share a key; check the current Studio status and help guidance when configuring your channel.
2. Get permission for the recording, performance, and visuals
Clear the rights for every part of the program before going live. That can include the sound recording, the musicians’ performance, the underlying compositions, and any images or video shown alongside the kirtan. A devotional or traditional subject does not automatically make a particular recording or performance free to use.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, including copyrighted content in another live broadcast. Even if you have a license, a rights owner’s Content ID system may still interrupt the stream unless the owner has allowlisted your channel. Ask the rights owner to add your channel to the allowlist and keep written permission and related documentation available.
If you cannot confirm rights for an element, replace it with material you have permission to use before creating the continuous feed. Do not rely on being able to resolve a copyright claim after the stream has started.
3. Prepare a continuous program source
Choose a stable, rights-cleared audio/video feed. You can pair kirtan audio with a static image or a gently changing visual if you have permission to use that image or visual. YouTube’s platform guidance does not prescribe a required video style, playlist format, or ideal program duration; those are production decisions.

For a computer-based setup, make sure the encoder can access the media source for the whole time you intend to broadcast. Organize the source material so it can continue playing as required, and test that the audio does not unexpectedly stop or become silent between tracks. Avoid adding recordings, artwork, or footage merely because they are publicly accessible.
4. Create the YouTube broadcast and connect an encoder
- Open YouTube Studio and enter the Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream, then review the stream’s visibility and other broadcast details before sending viewers to it.
- Choose an encoder such as OBS and configure it to send the prepared audio/video feed to YouTube. YouTube’s Live Streaming API describes the incoming feed as a
liveStreamand the viewer-facing event as aliveBroadcast; most creators can set up a stream through Studio without using the API. - Copy the stream key from YouTube Studio into the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to send video to your channel. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in Studio and update the encoder.
- Start the encoder’s stream and wait for the Live Control Room to show that it is receiving a signal. Check the preview and stream health before directing viewers to the feed.
YouTube’s API guide documents a channel keeping a 24/7 live feed running while starting a separate interview broadcast from the same stream. That is an API use case, not a promise of uptime and not a requirement to use the API. For ordinary setup, use the Live Control Room and encoder workflow above.
5. Set the encoder for the connection you have
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video options for RTMP/RTMPS, and AAC or MP3 audio. Use constant bitrate encoding and set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.

For H.264, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are platform recommendations, not a universal minimum internet speed. YouTube’s guidance gives bitrate ranges for other resolutions and frame rates too, so consult its current encoder settings table for the exact combination you intend to use.
Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that your actual upstream connection can sustain. A higher setting is not automatically better if it causes dropped frames or interruptions. YouTube recommends testing with representative sound and motion and monitoring stream health. In OBS, rising dropped frames indicate an unstable connection or one that cannot sustain the configured bitrate.
6. Test the program and monitor the live feed
- Run a test with the actual audio, visual, encoder settings, and network connection you will use for the continuous feed.
- Check YouTube Studio’s preview and stream-health indicators, along with the encoder’s status. Confirm that sound is audible and the picture is stable.
- Watch for dropped frames or other signs that the connection cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Lower the bitrate or resolution if needed, then test again.
- Assign someone to watch for stream interruptions and copyright alerts and to take action when they occur. A continuous feed still needs a response plan.
7. Keep the setup running and plan for recovery
For a computer-and-encoder setup, keep the encoder, source media, power, and network equipment in a stable location. A dedicated low-power computer is optional; an existing computer may be suitable if it can run the chosen encoder reliably and remain connected. Compare potential computers on sustained stability, wired Ethernet, ports, operating-system support for the encoder, remote restart, cooling and noise, and ease of service.

A UPS can keep local equipment powered through a short power interruption, depending on its runtime at the actual load. It cannot guarantee internet access or YouTube availability. No particular backup system or uptime target is established by the platform guidance cited here.
If YouTube drops the stream, check the Live Control Room and encoder, confirm that the source and network are available, and restart or reconnect the encoder as needed. If a rights alert appears, do not assume a valid license will prevent interruption: contact the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting and follow YouTube’s instructions.
