Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRestart the process that owns the connection to YouTube. If nginx-rtmp launches FFmpeg, configure and verify that module’s child-process respawn behavior. If FFmpeg runs separately, supervise the FFmpeg process with the host’s service manager. Neither approach can repair a dead media source, a wrong stream key, a broken network route, or encoder settings YouTube cannot accept.
First identify which process publishes to YouTube
There are several arrangements that can look like “an Nginx stream,” but recovery belongs to the process that actually owns the outbound publishing connection.
- nginx-rtmp launches FFmpeg: The RTMP module manages an external child process. Review the exec directives and respawn options supported by the exact module fork and version installed.
- FFmpeg runs independently: Configure the host’s service manager to restart the FFmpeg publisher when it exits under the conditions you choose.
- Nginx RTMP uses a push relay: Trace whether the module itself owns the outbound relay. Do not assume restarting Nginx will restart a separate FFmpeg process or repair the relay’s upstream.
Check process lists, Nginx and FFmpeg logs, exit status, and timestamps to establish which process owns the YouTube connection. A restart policy only helps if it is attached to the process that failed.
Choose the recovery layer
| Recovery placement | Use it when | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| nginx-rtmp child respawn | nginx-rtmp launches the external publishing process | Behavior depends on the module fork/version and child exit; it is not end-to-end health recovery. |
| Service-manager restart | FFmpeg runs as a standalone service | Unit syntax, exit policy, and retry delay depend on the host configuration. |
| Nginx RTMP push relay | The RTMP module itself owns the outbound relay | It does not necessarily supervise a separate publisher or repair source and upstream faults. |
For a standalone FFmpeg publisher, use the service manager already supported on the host and choose a deliberate retry delay. There is no universal unit configuration: the right policy depends on the operating system, service-manager version, FFmpeg command, and whether an exit is temporary or indicates a permanent configuration error.

Check the YouTube connection before increasing retries
- Copy the current endpoint and key. Get the RTMPS URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key as a secret: do not expose it in logs, screenshots, or public examples.
- Check protocol, address, path, and port. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its guidance specifies the RTMPS protocol, a valid YouTube endpoint and path, and port 443. The endpoint and key are specific to the account and stream. Google describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through an SSL connection in its RTMPS ingestion documentation.
- Read the error before changing the retry policy. A timeout can result from sending cleartext RTMP to an RTMPS endpoint, an incorrect URL or port, or missing encoder support. Fix protocol, TLS, or address errors first; more retries just repeat the same failure.
- Confirm the installed build’s behavior. FFmpeg documents RTMPS as RTMP over a secure SSL connection in its protocol documentation. Verify that the FFmpeg build and nginx-rtmp fork actually installed support the protocol and options you intend to use.
If you create streams through the YouTube Live Streaming API, the LiveStreams resource exposes ingestion address fields and a backup address when dual ingestion is supported. Use the address associated with the stream rather than assuming every account or stream has the same endpoint.
Separate process recovery from stream recovery
A child respawn or service-manager restart relaunches a process after it exits. It does not necessarily detect a process that is stuck, establish that the output connection recovered, or make valid media appear again. The source and the publishing output are separate things to check.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Source: Confirm that the camera, capture device, local relay, or file input still exists and is producing media.
- Network: Check reachability and TLS/connection errors between the publisher and YouTube.
- Publisher: Check FFmpeg exit status and logs, and whether the process exited or is still running without delivering output.
- YouTube: Review stream health in Live Control Room after reconnecting.
Compare recovered output with YouTube’s current live encoder guidance. The cited guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, supports up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. A successful process restart alone does not establish that the stream is healthy or correctly encoded.
Validate the Nginx configuration and test recovery
- Inspect the relevant exec or push configuration and identify the process responsible for the outbound connection.
- Check the Nginx configuration with
nginx -tbefore reloading. The cited NGINX Plus installation guide documents this check; its package and module instructions apply to NGINX Plus, not automatically to every open-source installation. - Observe a normal stream first. Record process status, relevant log lines, connection timestamps, and YouTube stream health.
- In a noncritical test stream, induce a controlled publisher-child failure. Confirm that the correct process restarts, reconnects, resumes valid media, and leaves useful logs.
- If recovery fails, distinguish a process that did not restart from one that restarted but could not connect, and from one that connected but had no valid input or output.
Use the installed module’s own documentation to confirm the meaning and timing of its respawn settings. Do not assume option names or behavior are identical across nginx-rtmp forks and versions.

Troubleshoot common restart failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits but does not return | Respawn policy is absent, unsupported, or configured on a different process. | Identify the process owner and configure recovery at that layer; verify behavior against the installed module or service manager. |
| FFmpeg returns, but YouTube still shows no incoming stream | The publisher may be retrying an invalid endpoint/key, failing TLS, or unable to reach YouTube. | Check the current RTMPS URL, path, port 443, key, FFmpeg protocol support, and connection logs. |
| The stream reconnects but has no picture or sound | The input may be unavailable, or the recovered output may not contain valid media. | Check the source independently, then inspect YouTube stream health and encoder output. |
| Nginx restarts but FFmpeg keeps failing or stays down | FFmpeg may be an independent process rather than an Nginx-managed child. | Supervise the standalone FFmpeg service directly; do not treat an Nginx reload as its restart policy. |
| The connection repeatedly times out | Protocol, TLS support, URL, port, or route may be wrong. | Resolve the connection error before increasing retry frequency. |
| The process is running but delivery has stopped | A child-respawn rule usually responds to process exit, not necessarily a wedged process or failed output. | Inspect logs and connection state, and define a separate health check if the deployment requires detection of a live-but-stuck process. |
