For one video, use an OBS Media Source and turn on Loop. VLC must be installed for VLC Video, and its architecture must match OBS—for example, 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
Choose the right OBS source

OBS documents these controls in its Media Sources guide (dated January 11, 2022). It does not publish comparative reliability benchmarks for these playback options.
Set up a rotating playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. VLC Video requires VLC to be installed. Match its architecture to OBS: if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- Add the source. In your OBS scene, add a VLC Video source. Add the local video files you want to play and arrange them in the intended order.
- Choose how the list behaves. Enable Loop Playlist to restart from the beginning after the final file. Enable Shuffle Playlist if you want randomized playback rather than the listed order.
- Check visibility behavior. In the source’s settings, choose whether playback continues, pauses, or stops when the source is not visible. Pick the behavior that fits your scene changes; otherwise, a hidden source may not play as you expect.
- Check the scene before going live. Confirm that the source appears in the intended scene and that its video and audio play as expected.
- Connect OBS to YouTube Live. In YouTube Studio’s live setup, configure the stream settings for your encoder, then check that YouTube is receiving the stream before starting the broadcast.
Loop a single video instead
If you only need one file to repeat, add an OBS Media Source, select the video, and enable Loop. Use VLC Video instead if you need multiple files in a playlist; Media Source’s Loop option repeats a single file, not a list.
Keep playlist playback separate from broadcast automation
OBS handles local media playback. YouTube’s Live Streaming API handles broadcast and stream resources: it can support tasks such as creating and managing broadcasts and streams, linking them, scheduling, and transitioning broadcast states. These are separate jobs—the API documentation does not say that it rotates local media files inside OBS. Creating, updating, or deleting resources requires user authorization.

For a straightforward rotation, configure the playlist in OBS and use YouTube Studio to check and start the broadcast. Consider API-based lifecycle control only if you need programmatic broadcast management. Google’s documentation covers the YouTube Live Streaming API overview and the life of a broadcast.
Check rights before you stream
YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If it identifies third-party content, YouTube may replace the stream with a placeholder image and warn you to stop streaming it; if the content remains, the stream may be temporarily interrupted or terminated.

If you have a licence for third-party material, YouTube advises asking the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Having permission does not by itself guarantee that automated detection will not interrupt the stream. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams before broadcasting.
Troubleshoot common problems
- VLC Video is unavailable or will not load files: Install VLC and check that its architecture matches OBS. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
- The playlist stops after the last file: Enable Loop Playlist in VLC Video. For a single file, enable Loop in Media Source.
- The videos play in an unexpected order: Check the file order in VLC Video and whether Shuffle Playlist is enabled.
- Playback pauses or stops during a scene change: Review the source’s visibility behavior setting; it determines what happens when that source is hidden.
- YouTube interrupts or replaces the stream: Check for third-party material and follow YouTube’s warning. If the content is licensed, ask the owner about Content ID allowlisting.
