Then connect OBS to a YouTube Live event with its stream URL and key, and configure the encoder for a bitrate your computer and upload connection can sustain. Playlist playback and YouTube’s event start and stop controls are separate settings.
What you need before setting up the playlist
- OBS Studio and VLC installed on the computer that will run the stream. The VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Your video and audio files stored somewhere the computer can access throughout the stream.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned stream.
- A reliable wired or wireless upload connection that can sustain the selected video bitrate, plus capacity for audio and normal network variation.
OBS documents support for common media formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, WebM, MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. The VLC Video source uses VLC libraries for extended media support. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.
Build and test the OBS playlist
- Install matching software. Install VLC in the same architecture as OBS. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. Restart OBS after installing VLC if the source is not visible.
- Create a scene for the broadcast. In OBS, create or select the scene you want to use for the playlist. Add a source with + in the Sources panel and choose VLC Video. Name it clearly, such as “Main playlist.” If VLC Video is missing, check the VLC installation and architecture.
- Add files in playback order. In the source properties, add the local media files in the order you want them to play. Check the order before going live; it determines the sequence.
- Set repeat behavior. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for predictable sequencing. Turn on Loop Playlist if you want playback to start again at the first item after the last one finishes. Leave looping off if the stream should reach the end of the list instead.
- Check scene visibility behavior. Set how the VLC source behaves when its scene is hidden. Depending on the selected setting, media may stop, pause, or continue when you switch scenes. Test a scene change and return before relying on the playlist unattended.
- Preview the whole path. Play representative files and check picture, sound, transitions between files, and playlist order. Use the same scene and output settings you plan to stream with.
OBS’s Media Sources guide documents the VLC Video playlist and its loop and shuffle controls. A playlist repeating in OBS does not schedule a YouTube event or start the encoder by itself.
Create the YouTube Live event and connect OBS
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule the live event. Confirm the channel has access to live streaming; first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- Copy the stream destination and stream key provided for the event. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the connection details using the available connection method. Use the event’s key, not a key copied from an unrelated stream.
- Protect the key. Treat it like a password: do not publish it or include it in screenshots. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS before streaming again.
- Keep the event and encoder roles distinct. YouTube provides the destination and event controls; OBS sends the encoded video and audio. Starting playlist playback in OBS is not the same as scheduling the event in YouTube.
YouTube notes that streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a longer stream will be archived. Check YouTube’s live stream settings guidance for the event options available to your account.

Set OBS output for 4K at 60fps
For 4K/60, use 3840×2160 resolution at 60 frames per second only if the computer’s encoder and upload connection can sustain it. In OBS, review Settings → Video for the output resolution and frame rate, then Settings → Output for the streaming encoder and bitrate. Labels and encoder availability can vary by OBS version and hardware.
Choose a codec and bitrate your system supports
YouTube’s English encoder guidance lists these bitrate ranges for 4K/2160p at 60fps. They are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular computer or Indian internet connection can deliver a stable stream.

| Codec | YouTube bitrate range for 4K/60 | Practical check |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 14–50 Mbps (minimum to recommended) | Choose an H.264 encoder supported by your system and test sustained upload at the chosen bitrate. |
| AV1 or H.265 | 10–35 Mbps (minimum to recommended) | Use only if the selected OBS encoder and your computer support the codec; test the complete setup. |
The figures are from YouTube’s encoder settings guidance; the page does not state a publication year. Do not assume AV1 or H.265 is the right choice merely because its published bitrate range is lower: encoder and hardware support matter. Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube advises not exceeding four seconds.
Test the connection, not just the speed-test result
Run an upload speed test at the place and time you expect to stream, then perform a private or unlisted test stream at the intended settings. Use representative motion and audio, watch YouTube’s stream health, and check for dropped frames or warnings. Allow headroom above the selected video bitrate for audio and connection variation; a brief speed-test peak is not proof of a stable long-duration upload. No India-specific bitrate table or ISP performance figure is established by the cited guidance, so test your actual connection.

Understand latency and unattended start or stop
YouTube does not offer low- or ultra-low-latency modes for 4K/2160p streams: its encoder guidance says 4K streams use normal latency. If near-real-time audience interaction is essential, consider lowering resolution rather than expecting 4K to behave like a low-latency stream. See YouTube’s latency guidance.
YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings can make the live event start and stop with the encoder when enabled. They are separate from OBS’s playlist loop. Configure the options in the event’s live stream settings and verify the behavior using a private or unlisted test before leaving a broadcast unattended. Availability and controls can depend on the current account and event settings; consult YouTube’s live stream settings page.

Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video is missing from OBS sources | VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS. | Install VLC matching OBS (64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC), then restart OBS. |
| A file will not play or has no sound | The file may be unsupported or damaged, or the source may not be configured as expected. | Test the file separately, try a documented common format, and verify audio in the OBS mixer before streaming. |
| The next item plays in an unexpected order | The playlist order differs from the intended sequence or shuffle is enabled. | Review the source’s file order and turn off Shuffle Playlist. |
| The playlist stops after the last file | Loop Playlist is off. | Enable Loop Playlist if continuous repetition is intended. |
| Playback pauses or stops after switching scenes | The VLC source’s hidden-scene behavior is interrupting playback. | Review its visibility behavior and test the scene transition you expect to use. |
| YouTube reports unstable stream health or dropped frames | The upload path or encoder may not sustain the selected 4K/60 settings. | Test at the planned time and bitrate, verify CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and reduce output demands if the test remains unstable. |
| The event does not start or stop with OBS | YouTube auto-start/auto-stop may be disabled or event settings may differ. | Check the event’s live stream settings and verify with a test event before relying on automatic control. |
Copyright and channel-policy checks for a documentary playlist
Before streaming, make sure you have the rights or permission needed to use every video, soundtrack, image, and other included material on YouTube. A playlist being technically playable does not establish that you have permission to broadcast it. Review YouTube’s current rules and account notices for the content and monetization decisions that apply; OBS playlist settings do not override platform policies.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps looping uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The computer at home does not have to stay on. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos, not camera footage, and streams to YouTube.
