Use two independent checks: supervise FFmpeg on the VPS so you can detect and restart a stopped process, and check YouTube’s liveStream status and health through the YouTube Live Streaming API to learn whether YouTube is receiving the feed. Alert only after an unexpected condition persists long enough to filter out brief startup or reconnect transitions. FFmpeg’s reconnect options can help restore a connection, but they do not notify you or prove that YouTube is receiving healthy media.
What to monitor: the process and YouTube’s ingest
A running FFmpeg process is not proof that your YouTube stream is online. FFmpeg can remain alive while the remote stream has stalled; the process check and the YouTube-side check answer different questions.
- VPS process check: Is FFmpeg running, and did it exit unexpectedly?
- YouTube stream check: Is YouTube receiving data, and what health state does it report?
YouTube’s LiveStreams resource exposes status.streamStatus and status.healthStatus. Its streamStatus values include created, error, inactive, ready, and active; active indicates that YouTube is receiving data via the stream. Health values include good, ok, bad, and noData.
Keep the resources straight: a liveBroadcast represents the event viewers watch; a liveStream carries the audio-video feed and can be bound to a broadcast. For an ingest-health alert, identify and check the relevant stream resource rather than assuming the broadcast object itself reports whether YouTube is receiving the feed. See Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API overview for the resource distinction.

Set up a useful alert
1. Supervise FFmpeg on the VPS
Run FFmpeg under a service manager such as systemd if that fits your VPS operating system. Configure the service to start at boot and restart after an unexpected exit, and retain its logs and exit status for diagnosis. Exact unit-file settings depend on your operating system and deployment; a community Ubuntu VPS example is available in the 24/7 YouTube Stream setup and operations notes, but its setup should not be treated as a universal guarantee.
Use the process check to alert on an unexpected exit. A restart policy can restore the process, but it cannot establish that the restarted FFmpeg instance is sending usable media to YouTube.

2. Review FFmpeg reconnect options
FFmpeg documents protocol-specific options including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, reconnect_streamed, maximum reconnect delay, retry count, and total retry duration. Consult the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation for the protocol and direction in your command: an option may not apply to every input or output protocol or failure.
Set finite retry bounds when unattended retries could otherwise continue without recovery, and confirm the behavior against the FFmpeg version and protocol you actually use. Reconnect is a recovery measure, not an alert: it does not tell you that a retry failed or that YouTube has resumed receiving data.

3. Check the YouTube stream resource
Use the YouTube Live Streaming API to obtain the correct liveStream resource and inspect its status and health. Treat active as the receiving-data signal. Include health information in the check so reported stream problems are visible even when FFmpeg has not exited.
Protect API credentials and stream keys. Do not include secrets in logs or alert payloads. A failed API request means the stream’s status is unknown; it does not prove the stream is offline or healthy.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
4. Alert on a sustained unexpected state
Have the monitoring loop compare the returned state with what you expect, count consecutive unexpected results, and notify only after a chosen threshold. Consider a separate recovery notification so you know when the check has returned to an expected state.
Choose the polling interval and persistence threshold according to acceptable detection delay, API use, and your operational needs. Google’s API reference defines the stream states, but does not prescribe one universally correct polling cadence or failure threshold.

Choose monitoring layers for your setup
| Layer | What it detects | Limitation | Useful comparison points |
|---|---|---|---|
| VPS process or service supervision | FFmpeg exits or fails locally | A live process can still be stalled or fail to deliver useful media remotely | Restart behavior, boot startup, log access, alert integration |
| YouTube Live Streaming API check | YouTube-reported stream status and health | Requires API access and a polling/checking mechanism; a failed API request leaves the stream state unknown | Detection delay, API use, state handling, credential security |
| External uptime or notification service | Independent scheduling and notification delivery, depending on the service | A generic HTTP check may not inspect YouTube’s actual stream state unless you expose a suitable health endpoint | Check interval, notification channels, secret handling, retention, price |
The process and API checks complement one another. An external service can run checks or deliver notifications independently, but the check must be designed to observe the condition you care about; no particular vendor is required by this approach.
Troubleshoot alerts that do not match the stream
- FFmpeg exited: Inspect the service-manager status, exit status, and captured FFmpeg logs. Determine whether the cause is input, encoding, or output/network failure before assuming a restart has fixed it.
- FFmpeg runs, but YouTube reports
inactiveorerror: Check the output connection, stream key and configuration, and YouTube’s reported health or configuration issues. Use the API fields as evidence of what YouTube reports. - YouTube reports
noData: Treat it as unknown and investigate; the API definition says YouTube’s live backend has no health-status information. Do not silently clear the alert as healthy. - Alerts flap during startup or reconnect: Add a persistence threshold and, if useful, a recovery notification. The threshold is an operational choice, not a value prescribed by the API documentation.
- The API check itself fails: Report monitoring failure separately from stream status. Investigate API access, authentication, quota, and network connectivity; do not let an unavailable check masquerade as a healthy stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream from uploaded video rather than a VPS-based FFmpeg setup, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Your video streams as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams, not camera-based live video. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free day.
